Soyinka Says Nigerian government muzzling dissenting voices

Professor Wole Soyinka has lamented the shooting of peaceful protesters in Lekki, Lagos, on Tuesday evening by soldiers, describing it as “Back to Abacha – in grotesque replay”.

In a statement on Wednesday, the nobel laureate said it was “absolutely essential to let this government know that the Army has now replaced SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) in the demonic album of the protesters.”

According Soyinka, President Muhammadu Buhari’s government acted in an “authoritarian manner” by deploying armed soldiers to shoot protesters.

He said, “My enquiry so far indicates that the Lagos governor did not invite in the Army, did not complain of a ‘breakdown in law and order’. Nevertheless, the Centre has chosen to act in an authoritarian manner and has inflicted a near incurable wound on the community psyche.”

“COVID-19 has battered the Nigerian economy – such as it is – for over eight months. Of course, it is not easy to bring down COVID under a hail of bullets – human lives are easier target, and there are even trophies to flaunt as evidence of victory – such as the blood-soaked Nigerian flag that one of the victims was waving at the time of his murder.”

“Little did they know what was churning in my mind: This is not real. This is Back to Abacha – in grotesque replay,” he said.

He called on governors across the country to immediately demand the withdrawal of deployed soldiers in their states and immediately convoke town hall meetings as a matter of urgency.

He added, “We commiserate with the bereaved and urge state governments to compensate material losses, wherever.

the Army must apologize, not merely to the nation but to the global community – the facts are indisputable – you, the military, opened fire on unarmed civilians.

Several youths reportedly died following the attack at the Lekki toll gate with about 25 others said to have sustained gunshot wounds.

However, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, claimed on Wednesday that no fatality was recorded in the shooting.

You see why i was against the Yorubas silence during the IPOB massacre.

Because, a time will come when we all need to stand together against injustice and wickedness in high places.

Im glad to see the Igbos and Yorubas united against a common enemy.

The apology won't be accepted. Human lives are not the same as those of cows. Let the ICC do it's work.

No apology needed from stone cold murderers of civilians - Nigerian army.

United, we Middle Belters and Southerners stand! Together we'll end buhari's Satanic regime. Together we'll make him pay for the souls massacred in Lekki and other parts of the country by murderers in uniform.

Just as ending SARS didn't end the protest. Apologies or withdrawing Armies from the street will not.

The biggest mistake the Governor will make is to withdraw Army from the street. We need more security personnel in Lagos.

Announcement Announcement! The protest in Lagos is never about the killings in Lekki.

It's has now turn to political and vindictive protest. It's a political assassination protest geared toward 1 single man.

Are SARS only present in Yorubaland? Why inject tribalism into this? If you want to stand up for what is right do it and if you don't that is ok too.

These guys are seriously confused. Apologise for what?
The self acclaimed educated are behaving like zombies in jungle. They're in serious disorder, burning govt properties, attacking their elders and now still the old fool suffering from hatred is accusing soldiers or govt at the centre.
You don't see anything if u keep insisting that the hoodlums are not guilty for all these mayhem.
The cowards have started calling massacre on their people when less than 100 peopled died. Those years several bombs blast and atleast more than 100 people die everyday in the North, we endured for years untill recently rescued from that horror. You never learn any lesson from northern insurgency, many ppl here were chanting for war, may be it's time to taste it though I foresee starvation coming in few days.
You no see anything for violence.
