As United States begins election today, Donald Trump who is a Republican is contesting against, former Vice-President Joe Biden, a Democrat. It is quite paradoxical that many Nigerians loves him and are rooting for his triumph despite not being too vocal towards Nigerians problems. So why does Nigerians like him?
While Obama prioritised gay marriage rights, abortion and Islamizing propaganda during his tenure which angered a lot of Nigerians, Trump was seen as someone who is straight forward, bombastic and a self made billionaire.
The fact that he called the country a 'shit hole', castigated the president as 'lifeless' and his 'America First' policy was supposed to make people hate him but his views echoed with the reasonings of many Nigerians on the state of the country. Under Trump, Nigerian immigrants were no longer accorded permanent residence visas to the United States. Trump has publicly stated his preference for lily-white Scandinavian immigrants instead of blacks from Africa. This also coincided with the opinions of many that blacks should stay in their continent and see to her development.
Although perceptions of Trump varies across Nigeria’s diverse cultural and religious landscape, there is a large affinity towards him. He has successfully been able to convince the likes of Biafrans Agitators, Pseudo Christians, Book Sellers and others admirers through his talks, policies and social media campaign.
Biafrans sessionist sees Trump as their messiah. The nationalism intoned in Trump’s “America First” mantra is for these Nigerians a rallying cry for “Biafra First.” They also assume that because he supported Brexit in the United Kingdom, he would support Biafran exit from Nigeria. Trump's Islamophobia also resonate with the thinking of these Biafrans. They believed that North Muslim dominace is the reason why Igbos are cut off from the political mainstream and oppression faced in the country.
For the Booksellers, Trump's book (Art of the Deal) has been a best seller in the country for many years now. We saw how traffic hawkers throw his books to our face on the roads which made him even more popular. Trump’s Art of the Deal and Think Big is regularly stocked by Church and School Society bookstore which are always sold out.
Trump is not universally popular among Christians in Nigeria, many of whom are critical of past allegations of sexual abuse, racism and financial misconduct. However, during the visit of President Buhari to the White House in 2018, he talked about the murder of Christians in the North. He revealed that he is going to work very, very hard on the problem and will not allow the persecution to last long. This soften the hearts of many Christians to him.
The LGBTQ activists and followers in the country also love him because he has not sponsored any hate agendas on them. Trump had in the past Trump supported the LGBT rights, welcomed them in his hotels and clubs. Other ardent supporters of Donald Trump in Nigeria see him as a God given figure who is blunt with the truth and are always conservative about his controversial policies.
For them, he embodies and gives voice to the ultra-conservative attitudes that hold great sway in Nigeria. They believe he is the type of leader the country needs to take it to a greater height. For this, Trump gets a free pass or has his other views enthusiastically endorsed.
Today, Americans are all set to make a choice between President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden. The two candidates have vastly different views on nearly every issue, right from policies impacting the world to Covid-19 pandemic. Who do you think will triumph?
