The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Iyaganku division, Ibadan, Alex Gwazarzah, has taken a fashion designer, Lukman Adeniyi, to court for giving his cloths to an apprentice to sew.

Trouble started after the DPO claimed that the tailor damaged the cloths.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, Olugbenga Fadeyi, said, “Information from the DPO Iyaganku, Alex Gwazarzah, was that it was agreed that the tailor would sew the cloths by himself, but he gave them to another person. The Commissioner of Police is looking into the matter.

Alhaji Idris Bawa, who had been his customer for over 10 years.

Adeniyi alleged that the DPO assaulted him the day he went to deliver the sewn materials on the allegation that the clothes were not well made.

The fashion designer said, “The DPO, after slapping me, still collected all the 12 materials without paying the N60,000 agreed on.

“On Saturday, November 1, the DPO told me to come for the money only for him to detain me.”

He was reportedly released on bail on Monday, November 2, and charged to court on Tuesday.

Adeniyi was arraigned at Court 8, Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court, Ibadan, in a case with suit number MI/881C/2020.

The DPO accused the defendant of damaging materials worth N181,000, which he handed over to him in Septembe Gwazarzah said he was not satisfied with the quality of job that was delivered.

He argued that against his agreement with the tailor, the clothes were made by his apprentice.

The Magistrate, Olajumoke Akande, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till November 17, for further hearing.

Counsel for the defendant, Jubril Olanrewaju, said, “You can imagine the DPO being a judge in his case. He was the one who investigated the case and made the fashion designer to write a statement in his office at Iyaganku. He was also the one who signed the charge sheet.”

The DPO is obviously one of "dem" awọn SARS GENG..... cheating and exploiting in their blood.

How much is his salary self to be able to buy over 100k cloths at once after all monthly expenditures, why he can't pay the tailor his bills but now claiming his customer of 10yrs damaged his 12 materials at once, which judge accepted to hear the case without advising the DPO to simply pay the tailor off, put ego aside and beg the tailor, Abi he has forgotten what police went thru in the hands of the youth from the other side (thugs)...... Yeye dey smell

I am sorry to say, this is why I never pitied those police officers that were attacked during the protest.

They are very terrible set of people, no matter how you try to be friendly with them, they will still mess you up. sad

Police brutality can never stop in Nigeria, what we can do as citizens is to build up a strong resistance by raising our voices and increasing the tempo of our computer keyboards till they learn to respect us at leastundecided

A normal reporter would have focused on the potential assault case but they choose to make it about court. What is wrong in charging a tailor to court?

I agree but charging someone to court is not police brutality. The DPO should be sued for assault.

Not at all, in fact, the court should be the last resort for the poor masses.

However, slapping, illegal detention, forcing the man to sign a statement and not paying him despite collecting the 'badly sown' materials while still asking the man to pay N181,000 for the said materials all amount to police brutality undecided

Slapping constitute brutality but the detention is not illegal. Not paying and asking for payment is not brutality either.

Police brutality in this context doesn't stop at savage physical violence, it also implies great cruelty. When you torture someone emotionally, you're being cruel to the person. Boss man here collected what he called 'badly sown' materials and still detained the poor tailor when he honored his invitation to come for his money undecided

Any person can torture another emotionally, even couples do it. The worst that could come from such is a civil suit.

Are you defending the policeman? You should be experienced to know the underlying factors that led to this palaver.
