chopper:

i use both HITV and DSTV, apart from EPL which i hardly have time to watch, there is no difference in all paytv channels. if DSTV tries it, they will be digging their grave and we shall sure bury them here in naija

Ahh but that is exactly where the golden eggs lie -- the EPL! And that by a very long shot is where DSTV's advantagel is. So untill other Pay TV services come up with this package DTSV will continue to lead the pack.

I'm all for lower subscription fees BTW. smiley

Guys we need suggestions on how to make this guys bring down their prize and not increase, they are making a fortune of Nigerian.

I would like to state that in my own opinion they are the best in the game in Nigeria because the others are real mediocres and for lovers of football like my self i want to keep on subscribing, but we need to know the best way to catch these guys. suggestions  please,

The government is not handling these foreigners very well, what can be done by ordinary Nigerians like us

Dear Valued Subscriber

RE: Annual subscription price increase for DStv

Please be advised that MultiChoice Africa annual subscription price increase will become effective 1 April 2011. In determining a price increase MultiChoice takes into account many factors including, and amongst others, the impact on the subscriber, operational costs, satellite lease costs, programming costs and efficiencies effected within the company.

Please see new DStv subscription pricing below:

Compact Plus bouquet: N6,800 to N7,000
Compact bouquet: N4,500 to N4,800
Family Bouquet: N2,500 to N2,800
Access Fee *: N1,200 to N1,800

* This applies in a case of Dual View subscribers only.

However, for the first three months DStv will be discounting the new DStv Premium subscription price by N300 per month which means you will only pay N10,000 for April, May and June 2011 after which the full price of N10,300 will be billed. This initiative is being undertaken to relieve the pressure of the price increase to our loyal DStv Premium subscribers.

DStv continues to provide world-class home television entertainment, news and sports programming in line with the best digital pay television platforms worldwide.

We are most grateful for your continued support and will continue to provide a service that is consistent, efficient, and accessible.

Yours sincerely

Joseph Hundah
Managing Director
MultiChoice Nigeria

also heard about it yesterday when i went there for the renewal, they said, i shud take note, that when next am coming I shud come with 9600 for 2months subscription instead of 9000,

it's crazy, dont think will have a government in this country or is there no regulatory body at all, cos these people are taking us for granted
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by lagoshost(m): 5:24pm On Mar 15, 2011
They will continue to dupe us until we learn how to support our own people. Remember these guy are from SA and hate us with a passion.

Lets also consider helping our local companies to grow.
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by elrony(m): 5:36pm On Mar 15, 2011
not their fault, after all nigerians crucified their own indigenous hitv, i wish other paytv companies can upgrade so i can dump this dstv decoder

foyeks2001:

Pay TV is not an essential service, for most people its still a luxury. I think its rather far fetched when people call on the government to intervene in these kinds of issues. Government should be concerned with other important things not whether Nigerians watch Big Brother or African Magic or the EPL.

The way to bring down subscription fees lies in free market competition not by government interference.

Do away with such talk! Your statement only fosters disunity and trouble furthermore it is untrue. People had better put an end to this "everybody is against us" mentality.

They are the best in nigeria right now,, if you dont wanna pay, go to CTL or star or watever, this is not a regulated market, any operator can fix any price they want. If you dont like it, walk away,

that's capitalism,

dats d same way MTN is makin billions (wat they declared) here, who knows how much they stashed away b4 reporting end of year profits,

Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by Nobody: 6:43pm On Mar 15, 2011
dstv is good at what they do, but hitv only failed cuz 1st their rates where to high compared to what they offered. The only live sports hitv offered then was epl and champions league, etc. Dstv offered live matches of other leagues plus live formula1 and gp2 races, which covers 1st, 2nd and 3rd practices and then qualifying, before main race. They also off live tennis grand slams. Thats one major edge dstv has, live sporting programes, not just football.

I dont dig dstv cuz i feel they ought to be able tn reduce their subscription. Maybe we should invite sky of uk. Or let daarsat buy up hitv and repackage, rebrand, relaunch, with matching or superior content to dstv, then the price wars will start, just as its happening in mobile telephony
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by Guyman02: 6:46pm On Mar 15, 2011

all this sports that you are talking about do you watch them? 90% of guys in nigeria pay to watch only football nothing else. maybe they should stop showing us live formula1 and gp2 races and live tennis grand slams and reduce there price.

Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by BluStreak(m): 9:39pm On Mar 15, 2011
Price hike in any society has never been welcomed with fanfare even with justifiable reasons. The truth in this whole matter is that DStv will continue to hold the ace because they have no viable competitors. Their array of channels dusts whatever it is the other so called PayTv providers have in their stock. Until there are real competitors, DStv remains the way to go. Can anyone compare DStv's premium sub's content with what Hitv which is the closest competitor is offering on its premium sub at N3500? In summary, DStv is in a class of its own.
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by Limaoscar: 10:44pm On Mar 15, 2011
I hear DSTV don't even relay UEFA Cup matches.
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by passyjango(m): 10:51pm On Mar 15, 2011
DSTV is simply the best. They offer the best quality programming. I heard people talking about HiTV and StarTimes. Is that a joke or what? If these services were free I would still prefer to pay for DSTV.

As for people complaining about this price increase, let us be objective. Compare rate of increase of DSTV subscription over 10 years to how the price of petrol, diesel or even Garri has increased and you will discover that DSTV is trying.

OK, apart from Sports channels, much of their channels are what we are watching free on air in Europe and America. South Sfrican company! tongue
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by Nobody: 5:48am On Mar 16, 2011
DsTV no get rival, besides 300 is not too much. If no other satelite dish can show english premiership, I see no competetion for DsTV. Even if they increase it again, ppl will still subscribe.
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by Ecash1: 7:24am On Mar 16, 2011
It is the lack of competition that is prompting then to do so, It is unfortunate though. They should remember that people have long memory.
Re: Dstv To Increase Their Subscription Fee! by Cipriani(m): 7:41am On Mar 16, 2011
Yap Yap Yap!!! All you people have been yapping since. The fact there is that we live in a mixed economy where the capitalist is having the upper hand compared to the socialist. The citizens of the country are to complacent. When there is a strike initiated by NLC or any body, people will cooperate for 2days and then begin to complain and whine about the strike. The next they want is the strike to be called off. You ask them why they don't want to bear it anymore, they tell you they will manage and they have been managing all the while.

Push an European to the wall, he will revolt, push an american to the wall, same thing. But push a Nigerian to the wall, he would rather prefer to break the wall and move further than revolt. Most of you here are complaining, why don't you all take the bold step to stop subscribing for 3months, but hold on, even if the less than minor number of you here do, there are a lot folks out there who don't give a damn. Rich folks will pay, lovers of soccer would pay even if it is through their nose and then their business will continue to flourish. Only when people act like me, something will be done. Instead of paytv, switch to local channels, log on to the internet, buy your kids PS2s and Xbox and forget paytv. They will definitely come back to their senses but its unfortunate people are not ready to do so.

Besides the viewing quality and live sport programming, nothing else is entertaining on DSTV. Most the other programmes are either repeated or old. Imaging me watching Ellen Degeneres episode of November last year at this time of the time of the year. DSTV never gives current programmes being shown in developed countries. They wait to get right to air after about 3 months or more when its has become old to the owners. I haven't paid my subscription for about 5months now and i don't give a damn.

If we have good internet services to watch live streams, they people like me would never watch paytv again even though I still do not now. Once the price has been blown up, there is absolutely nothing you people can do because we never have one voice in Nigeria.

You see people like you are everywhere. N300 is not too much, next thing you know, they will add another N300 in the next 5months and the trend continues. The fact is we are the ones killing ourselves in this country by letting others exploit us. Its not surprising because we also exploit ourselves. When FG increases allowance, prices of commodity shoots up. Market women believe also that they have to collect their share and then increase price of wares and stuffs. At the end of the day, everybody suffers because when the market women do increase prices, the transporters do the same and whole private sector follow suit and then comes the public sector who will also then increase oil price and voila!! we are all back to square one.

We need a rethink in this country, we need revolution but nobody want to take the first shot. Nobody wants to die

Let begin the game, sign the petition to force them to reduce their prices! Besides, their largest market is here and we still pay more here than in SA. Then where is advantage of Population? Again, premium is actually NGN10,300.00 after 3 months and not even NGN10,000.00

Very funny. There are other pressing issues that should concern Nigerians, not satellite television. This is not a matter of life and death. People who can't afford pay TV will just settle for local channels.
