Nigeria Was Technologically Advanced Before European Colonialism - Evidence by Rossnitti: 10:55pm On Nov 14, 2020
Most Nigerians believe that Europeans brought 'civilization' to us.

That before their arrival, we were primitive, savage, and barbaric, and lacked technology and science.

This thread will shatter every one of those false notions derived from colonial indoctrination, and show that the only area in which the Europeans were more advanced than us was in military hardware, and little else, and that our ancestors were in fact brilliant scientists who were highly knowledgeable in advanced medicine, botany, metallurgy, mathematics, communications, construction, astronomy, and architecture, among other disciplines.

I will also show that we had the capacity and knowledge to advance into the modern world WITHOUT western colonisation, in our own right, as a brilliant, innovative people.

Each post I make will deal with one specific discipline, as we move along in this journey into our amazing past.

Watch this space for further details.

We're referring to the territory known today as Nigeria.

As part of this exploration, I will include the precolonial scientific capabilities of our West African neighbours as well, such as our Ghanaian and Malian brothers, as part of the overall discussion.

I disagree. That a new name was given to us by foreigners who would have had no business doing so had we not sold our sovereignty for personal gains, does not mean we were not existing before then.
Going by our level of civilization then, we would still have found a way to dwell together mostly for trade purposes and eventually intermarry and live together.

True, which is why as part of this exploration, I will include the precolonial scientific capabilities of our West African neighbours as well, such as our Ghanaian and Malian brothers, as part of the overall discussion.

So why not say African instead of trying to promote Nigeria that is a mere nickname for slavery.

Okay...

In the field of Art and Crafts, I believe we were advanced truly. Talk about the Nri and Benin bronze artifacts,Northern Nigeria mat making and dyeing process et al.

But astronomy?

Please don't tell me they used their shadows for time-telling, or that in the field of mathematics they counted sticks for sums, or in communication even, they blew up smokes to signal important notice. Please.

Instead of gloating, we should really be appreciating the European technologies and be making positive use of them.

They were far more advanced in transportation, propounding mathematical and physics laws, studying the space from Earth as at the time and making ground-floor inventions that posterity keeps on modifying.

We were existing as a different people, some have never had any contact with others. Trying to lump us all together and give us a phantom achievement when we are not even aware of our boundaries is totally mischievous.

COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

Most of us believe we lacked proper communications before the advent of the telephone, and lately the mobile phone.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

We had long distance communication technology centuries before Europe. Simple but also complicated, and highly effective.

The Talking Drum

We use talking drums for Owambe parties today.

But do you know that the original function of the talking drum was long distance communication?

And I don't mean rudimentary noises made from one village to reach the next.

It was far more sophisticated than that.

FAR MORE.

The talking drum was used for individualised communication.

Do you know that every Yoruba man who got trained in this science, had his own unique talking drum 'signature' which took advantage of the tonal character of the language. and could be used to transmit messages directly to him in words he could understand to a distance of up to 160 kilometres?

He would equally return the messages.

He would be trained in how to build a talking drum wherever he was, if he didn't travel with one, to send his response back to the sender, in words that would be clearly understood, using the unique 'signature' of the recipient.

It was a kind of 'phone number', this unique 'signature'.

Once the drum was beaten, you would KNOW it was for you. The message would tell you who was 'calling', what they wanted, etc. And what the caller's signature was. You would then respond, using that signature. This could go on over a distance of up to 160 kilometres.

COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ctd.)

If you are a Yoruba man, and don't believe this about TALKING DRUMS, go to your village and ask the elders. They will even tell you more things you had no idea about.

''Niger-Congo languages are tonal in nature. Talking drums exploit the tonal aspect of Niger-Congo languages to convey very complicated messages. Talking drums can send messages 15 to 25 miles (40 km). Bulu, a Bantu language, can be drummed as well as spoken. In a Bulu village, each individual had a unique drum signature. A message could be sent to an individual by drumming his drum signature. It has been noted that a message can be sent 100 miles (160 km) from village to village within two hours or less using a talking drum.''

Igbos used the ekwe for similar purposes, ''This is a cylindrical shaped drum, made out of wood (usually a tree trunk) and hollow inside. It has rectangular cavity slits and was used for communication over long distances. It can produce rhythms to connote anything from celebration to emergencies.''

That is why today in rural Igboland, the mobile phone is called ''ekwe nti' meaning ''the ekwe of the ear''.

Leave aside physical instruments, do you realise that precolonial Nigerians used TELEPATHY to communicate? This was a science for which one was trained to build thoughts and transfer them from their belly region to the belly of the recipient. Again, go and ask your elders in your village, and they will confirm this. This technology was known all over West Africa, and was used extensively hundreds of years ago.

A study of this African technology was done on the San people of southern Africa, foolishly termed the 'Bushmen' by western historians.

''...The African Bushmen communicate in a similar way. As anthropologist Bradford Keeney discovered, the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert believe that all living creatures are connected by a silver stream of energy that extends from one belly button to another. The Bushmen use these horizontal “lines” like telephone wires to send and receive telepathic messages.'' Keeney, Ropes to God, 42.

In Ropes to God: Experiencing the Bushman Spiritual Universe, Keeney includes a Bushman’s description of this type of telepathy:

''You cannot send a thought to another person without first being filled with heightened emotion. . . . In this state you mix your thought, message or directive with your intensified feeling and make the thought a pure feeling. It is concentrated in your belly where the intensity of your feeling escalates to a point where it can no longer be held. Then it is released along the line coming out of your belly and directed to another person’s belly. They immediately respond when you communicate in this way. It may seem like we send our thoughts, but we are actually sending our feelings. Not weak, arbitrary feelings, but intense, almost overwhelming feelings. . . . A thought, message or request is changed into a feeling. . . . The feeling is the carrier.''

Go back and read how it works. You need to be smart to keep up with this. Each person had their unique tonal signature and only the recipient could understand the message even if thousands of people heard the drum.

NIGERIAN EXPERTISE IN MATHEMATICS BEFORE COLONIALISM

''The Yoruba people in present-day Nigeria developed their own numeration system based on units of 20 which requires subtraction to identify different numbers.''

According to Williams (2008), a professor of mathematics, the Yoruba numerals are “amazingly complicated” because the expression of small numbers involves considerable arithmetical manipulation and the extensive use of memory.

Documentary evidence also suggests that scholars throughout the Nigerian kingdoms were highly skilled in the science of magic squares, and were consulting Coptic Solar Calendars to develop agricultural science.

Williams (2008) states that books which were preserved from the 17th Century contain mathematical charts dealing with agronomic activities, including the right time to harvest; the direction of the wind; time of germination; and which insects appear during different seasons.

Lynch and Robbins (1978) also report that the Namoratunga megalithic site in northwestern Kenya, which was built around 300 B.C., has 19 aligned basalt pillars that were purposely built to be oriented towards particular stars and constellations. The existence of such sites and books suggests that an accurate and complex calendar system based on astronomical and agricultural knowledge was in use throughout the continent.
