What are the benefits of praying in tongues?

What do you do when you have a need? You talk to God in prayer about it and trust Him to provide for you, don’t you?

Now imagine if you had a heavenly prayer language that enables you to always pray perfect prayers in harmony with God’s will, which is to bless you with good and perfect gifts (see James 1:17). This includes divine wisdom, the building up of your spirit and your faith, healing for your body, and wholeness for your mind. Praying in tongues gives you access to all these blessings.

This is why God wants you to receive and utilize this powerful grace gift. It’s one gift with many applications and benefits!

________________________________________________

It makes your prayer life powerful and unlimited

Tongues is a language the Holy Spirit puts inside us to express to God everything we are unable to put into words because of our human limitations. It is a powerful prayer gift not limited by distance, time, or head knowledge.

Often, when we have a problem, we may not know everything about it or how to resolve it. Hence, we may pray with limited knowledge or understanding about the situation. But if you pray in the Holy Spirit, you are allowing Him to intercede for you. And the Spirit, who is not limited, knows all things. He knows exactly what the problem is and exactly what you need. He knows how to bring God’s best solution into your situation (see Rom. 8:26–27 NLT). He is able to plead for you in harmony with God’s will and cause everything to work together for good in every area of your life (see Rom. 8:28)!

Did you know that when you pray in tongues, you could also be prophesying good into your future, or even be praying for the protection of your loved one? Martin from Georgia, who has been following my teachings via broadcast in the US, experienced this firsthand:

“One day, after I came home from work, I felt a strong prompting to pray in the Spirit. Even though I had no idea who the prayer was for, I knew that everything was safe in the Lord’s hands.

Later, I received a call no parent would want to get. My daughter, who lives in New Hampshire, had a horrific car accident. According to the state police report, her car had veered off the road at eighty miles per hour and hit a sixty-feet-tall tree. The impact was so great that her car flipped over several times and the engine broke apart.

The accident happened minutes after I prayed. According to my daughter, a state policeman said to her, ‘Lady, you should be dead. I’ve never seen anyone come out of something like this alive!’ Praise God that my daughter only sustained minor bruises and a scratch!

I give Jesus all the praise and glory for saving my daughter’s life that day! What a wonderful Jesus we serve!”

What an amazing testimony! When you pray in the Spirit, you may not know it, but you could be effectively and supernaturally covering your loved ones or your future with God’s protection (while being spared the details that would honestly frighten you). The best part about it is that you can do it as you’re pretty much going about your day. You can pray in the Spirit under your breath as you’re driving, showering, or attending to any mundane chore… and be praying powerful prayers throughout the day!
________________________________________________

It builds up your faith

Jude 1:20–21 encourages us to pray in tongues because it builds us up on our most holy faith and keeps us in the love of God. When you pray in tongues, you are reminding yourself that God is working in you, for you, and through you. You are fortifying your inner man. You are strengthening your faith, and keeping yourself in the Lord’s love for you.

Once, as I was studying the Word, the Lord also showed me an inward vision of how when we pray in tongues, a watery shield goes up around us. We’ve learned that water is a picture of the Holy Spirit (see John 7:38–39), but why a shield of water? Because that is how we quench all the fiery darts of the enemy (see Eph. 6:16).

Imagine being constantly surrounded by this powerful shield as you pray in the Spirit while you go about your day. You don’t have to fear the devil’s attacks against you. You can go from faith to faith, walking boldly in the promise that no weapon formed against you or your loved ones shall prosper (see Isa. 54:17)!
________________________________________________

It releases rivers of practical supply and life into your situations

What is your need today? God has prepared rivers of practical supply to bring healing, life, and provision for all your challenges. As a new covenant believer, you have full access to these rivers of life through the Holy Spirit. When you pray in the Spirit, you release rivers of His wisdom, supply, and healing into your situations.

Are you hard pressed for a decision regarding your family, your job, your relationships, or your finances? Stir up the reservoir of divine wisdom that is dormant on the inside of you, and release rivers of wisdom to bring light and discernment into your situation.

I’ve found that the more I pray in the Spirit, the more my spirit becomes sensitive to His leading. Similarly, as you practice this gift, you’ll become more familiar with sensing the presence or absence of the Lord’s peace regarding a matter. And the more you learn to recognize and follow His leading of peace, the more you’ll be equipped to make the right decisions, find yourself at the right place at the right time, and experience His protection.

Now, apart from the river of wisdom, there are many other rivers of power that will impart life to your body or circumstances. There is a river of life for a sound mind, a river of love, another river of rest, yet another river of refreshing—all waiting to be released as you pray in the Spirit. Instead of feeling drained and dry of supply, let His living water flow freely as you consistently practice this powerful gift!
________________________________________________

It brings divine healing and health to your body and mind

Praying in tongues is a powerful, scriptural way you can experience healing for both your mind and body. If you have been suffering from a painful physical condition, panic attacks, depression, or some other debilitating medical condition, let me show you how using God’s gift of tongues can bring about healing and wholeness to your body and mind.

Look at what the apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:4—He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.

According to Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, the word edifies is translated from the Greek word oikodomeo, which means “to build a house, erect a building…to restore by building, to rebuild, repair.”3 Isn’t that interesting, considering that our physical bodies are the houses or temples of God’s Spirit (see 1 Cor. 6:19)? And doesn’t this tell us that as we pray in tongues, we can rebuild or repair our bodies broken down by age, stress, or disease?

You may have heard that when you pray in tongues you edify or charge up only your spirit or inner man. But 1 Corinthians 14:4 doesn’t say that only your inner man is edified. It says that the one who speaks in tongues edifies himself. Does himself include the person’s eyes, ears, nose, kidneys, liver, heart, brain, bones, joints, muscles, nervous system, and every other part of his body? Of course it does!

Beloved, your entire self—spirit, soul, as well as body—gets edified or rebuilt as you pray in tongues. God takes care of the whole package. So don’t limit this restorative effect to just your inner man. Start believing that as you pray in tongues, your body is also getting rejuvenated and repaired.

Perry, a member from my church, wrote to me about how a 29mm cyst found at the head of his pancreas was dramatically reduced in size to 15mm in just two months after he prayed in tongues. As a result, he didn’t have to go through a Whipple procedure—an operation more complex than a heart transplant. This is what he shared:

“When my doctor told me the seriousness of my pancreatic condition and how I might have to have the Whipple operation, I became really frightened and prayed to the Lord for healing. I would pray in tongues during my quiet time as you taught us to. This helped to strengthen my faith and remove negative thoughts. I told God I didn’t want to go through the Whipple procedure and prayed for the cyst to be reduced in size and to disappear eventually.

When I went for the scheduled check-up, I felt a sense of calm and peace in my heart. I continued to pray in tongues as I waited for the medical report. Lo and behold, the cyst had reduced in size to 15mm! It had shrunk by half in two months! The doctors also found it was benign. As such, I only needed to return once a year for a check-up. What a miracle!

I’m continuing to pray in tongues and believe the cyst will completely disappear by the time of my next visit.”

That, my friend, is the power of praying in tongues. Is there an organ in your body that needs repair? A heart that doesn’t always beat right, or perhaps an embarrassing skin condition that has defied all the remedies you have tried? Beloved, whether you have been discouraged by a bad medical report, a long-term health condition, or you are suffering from panic attacks and depression, give it all to the Lord and let His Spirit repair and restore your body and mind. God wants you whole in every way, both inside and out!

________________________________________________

It helps you overcome fears

Does fear have a hold on your heart and mind? Perhaps you’re imprisoned by the fear of losing something or someone, of falling sick, or of dying. The Bible tells us clearly that fear “involves torment” (1 John 4:18), something that is not part of God’s will for His children.

How can the gift of tongues deliver us from the bondage of fear? Earlier, we read how praying in the Spirit keeps us in the love of God (see Jude 1:20–21). In talking about how fear involves torment, the apostle John tells us that only the perfect love of God can cast out fear (see 1 John 4:18). So one of the ways to keep ourselves in the love of God is to pray in the Spirit. And as you do, fear will be driven completely out of your life.

Let me show you another scripture about how tongues can drive out fear. In 2 Timothy 1:6–7, Apostle Paul reminds Timothy:

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
—2 Timothy 1:6–7

In the Greek, the word “gift” here is the word charisma which is grace gift, the same word describing how tongues is a gift of the Spirit (see 1 Cor. 12:4).

Now of all of the gifts of the Spirit, which gift can you stir up at will? I believe Paul is referring to the gift of tongues. Paul was reminding Timothy that stirring up the gift of tongues is key to living free of fear and experiencing power, love, and a sound mind—blessings that are also your inheritance in Christ.

Let me show you how this happened for Nancy from North Carolina. Already baptized in the Holy Spirit, she took special notice when she heard me teach on how praying in tongues could take away our fears and anxieties. That piqued her interest because she had become very fearful of driving in thunder and rainstorms. She told me:

“After watching that sermon on tongues, I had the opportunity to pray in tongues through a bad storm while driving. Instead of panicking, I began to pray in tongues before I approached the storm and kept praying in tongues until I had driven out of it. All during that time, I was at total peace with no panic or anxiety. It was amazing!

I praise God that He brought me through this! I learned to fix my eyes on Jesus as I prayed in tongues and today, I have no more fear of storms!”

If like Nancy, there is something that you are fearful about—it could be your health, children, or future—I encourage you to pray in tongues. As you do, like Nancy, you will find your fears supernaturally replaced by God’s love and perfect peace, and experience victory over fear and anxiety.

My friend, whatever your challenge is today, I want you to know God loves you and has already provided all that you need. Tap into His grace gift of tongues and experience rivers of His power, supply, and life for every challenging circumstance today!

Read to understand. This was an expression. The expression is pellucid enough. I'll help you.

Here is what is written:

"I speak with tongues more than you all. Yet, in the church, I pray more in understanding so that I can edify others."

He is clearly saying that it is key to pray in tongues. He does it more than a tone else. However, be is more committed to edifying others in the church by speaking to them in understanding.

In his prayers, he prayed in tongues. In the church, he spoke to the people to edify and instruct!

Hope you get...

No, I don't get?

Why did he pray in that gibberish language and who is there to interpret?

speaking in tongues done in the Bible was for a purpose which is for communication. What is the purpose of trying to say something that doesn't serve any purpose. I don't believe in these our speaking in tongues

hopefulLandlord:
After independence, in order to build a great nation, each country went to work. But in Nigeria, after independence, our people went to pray and fast. So, while we were praying, Malaysia came here and took our palm seedlings and built a great factory of it. While we were praying, Singapore went into investment in technology. While we were praying, India went into ICT. While we were praying, China went to massive industrialization. While we were shouting Allah Alakuba! UAE went into massive infrastructural development. While we were binding and casting Lucifer, Japan went into technological development. While we were speaking in tongues, Denmark went into education of her citizens. While we were mounting big speakers in our places of worship, USA was mounting man on the moon.

After our prayers, God, being a wise God decided to reward us according to our labour. Since those that went into industrialization, technology, infrastructural development, ICT, education etc have been rewarded accordingly. It's only wise God rewards us with our efforts in prayers. That's why today, Nigerian pastors are competing in building the biggest churches.

That's why there are more prayer houses and worship places than hospitals and schools. That's why people rush to prayer houses for medical and business solutions instead of hospitals. That's why we don't do business proposals before jumping into business since we are going to back it up with prayers. And when it collapse, we blame devil. That's why it's a sin to say anything negative about pastors and imams. That's why our pastors don't consider the opinion of engineers while building and blame devil when building collapse. That's why faith in God replaces building pillars and when it collapse we blame it on Lucifer. That's why our pastors are making sure they plant church branches instead of schools in every streets in Nigeria. That's why we always wait for gods to do that which ability to accomplish we already have in us. That's why we want our teachers to labour on earth and go to heaven for their rewards. Nigeria is a prayer loving, god fearing nation. Religion has taken the place of technology, infrastructure, education and all. When we are traveling, we ignore all the necessary road requirements, servicing of our vehicles and pray. And, once we pray, we can put a half fit vehicle on the road and blame our step mother or mother in law if anything goes wrong. That's why there are more people dying on our roads. Because, we pray and fast and leave everything to God when we have all we need to survive and build a nation....... I hope it made sense to you

Hello sir/ma. It is indeed interesting that you have taken time to type all these. Seems to me like compassion and patriotism. I've seen things along the lines of this.

But going by the rules of critical reasoning, one is supposed to consider all sides equally, without bias. But from all I've read of your comment, I haven't seen much of anything that doesn't stem directly from bias towards Faith and Religion.

Really sir/ma, if we will reason critically on this, how do you blame all the faults of a nation that's over a century old, on prayers, and nothing but prayers alone? I don't see how. You mean to say, the lack of infrastructural development, the lack of good roads, the poor health care, the violent elections, the poor educational system, the prevalent corruption, the endemic poverty, and every thing else, is due to the simple fact that we pray?

Really sir/ma, I would like to reason with you if only you'll provide a link, even in one of those instances, where the problem has been caused by prayer. You say prayer is the problem, okay fine. But my analytical mind cannot but stop to reason, why? Why is prayer, and prayer only, and you mean absolutely nothing else but prayer, the root of the problem? How? I would appreciate if you would answer this sir/ma. Really, it's all one question severally rephrased.

You cited a lot of nations where there has been development. You stated that these developments have taken place "while we were praying."

But I have to wonder, really? How old are these nations, compared to a nation of such immense diversity composed of scores of smaller nations that were amalgamated barely a century ago?

Okay, let's move on from that. I do not know much history. But hey, I've seen some. You imply that all these other nations you cited as the "better examples" don't pray? Is that so? Perhaps you haven't heard about the huge tent revivals that were prevalent in the late 1800s and early 1900s? And in "America". Yes, that's USA, United States of America! These meetings recorded hundreds of thousands of people, human beings, in attendance. And there wasn't only one of these meetings. Many of them were going on simultaneously across the country.

Do you mean to tell us then, that during those years, USA wasn't developing, wasn't progressing at all? I mean, there were hundreds of thousands of people attending tent revivals, there were thousands more on missionary fields across the world, so who is left to "develop the nation?" Isn't that a major part of the nation's workforce? So, if prayer was the problem, I think we can "reasonably infer" that USA should have had no development at all in those decades. Or what do you think?

Men like Kenneth E. Hagin, Smith Wigglesworth, Oral Roberts, and women inclusive, spent hours and days doing nothing but praying. Kenneth E. Hagin could go on for hours(4, 5 hours or more) on end doing nothing else but praying IN TONGUES! And he wasn't the only one.

So, why didn't America stop progressing.

Did you hear of the Scottish Revival? Yes, in Scotland! A revival so strong that it ran the alcohol businesses down for many years after. So, why isn't Scotland stuck in a mire of underdevelopment?

From what you've commented here, sir/ma, it doesn't appear like you enjoy praying very much. I don't like to, but your comment forces me to wonder, "what have you contributed to grow the nation, since you don't pray?"

Of course, it's not a one man job to build a nation, so I don't expect that you do it alone. I just wonder.

Now, all these nations you've stated, say USA now, they're not very much on the faith anymore, even though they have the inscription, "IN GOD WE TRUST" in every courtroom and every government building. It's part of their national identity. But again, do you mean there are no churches anymore over there, no one prays anymore? Then why are they still progressing?

Let's talk Dubai, located in a strict Islamic state where many people would miss their 3 meals a day before they can miss their 5 prayers a day! They pray! Why is there so much prosperity over there? Why do they have some of the best, most modern infrastructure over there?I mean, they pray and prayer should stop all progress, as I gather from your comment, isn't it? But if that were to be the case, Dubai should be just as good as some backwater city over here.

Let's see, since you want us to believe prayer is the problem.
The budget for the annual salaries of 109 lawmakers is about 3 times more than the educational budget for over a million undergraduate students in the nation. Over a million undergraduates, that's not counting the average of 1.5 million that take UTME every year. That's not counting the students of the secondary schools and pupils in primary schools. The postgraduates have not even factored in. Of course, lecturers and professors will be paid from that. Yet, the budget is three times less than that for 109 senators.

And you say prayer is the problem? Really?

Combine the health budget for over 200million citizens, and it's still less than the budget for 109 senators.

And you still tell me prayer is the problem?

Government officials reshuffle public funds to suit their pockets.

But still, we blame prayer for that?

First class graduates are "honored" with special teaching jobs with under 40,000 naira per month as salaries.

How does prayer take a fault for that?

The list could go on and on, but I've typed so much already. I'm not saying you're wrong, why would I? I just hope that you can explain how all the problems that beset a one-hundred-and-some year old nation all tie on prayer? How? Really, how? I have considered it critically, and I see no reason in it. I hope that you can show me some iota of reason in that claim, and I would be most glad to follow along in your reason if it appears to be reasonable.

But sir/ma, I would like to invite you to try something. Try prayer. Just for two minutes, close your eyes. You don't have to plan ahead what to say, just try it. Just express your heart like you were talking to a friend. You don't have to say it out. Just make an attempt. I really would appreciate it you did. I promise you one thing, you'll see that prayer works. Prayer doesn't create problems, it solves them. If you want reason on that, I'll give it.

Pardon if there're misspellings or messed-up sentences. I haven't taken time to edit.
Re: What Are The Benefits Of Praying In Tongues? - Joseph Prince by memd: 1:57am On Nov 30, 2020
Hello! Let's look at it from a purely grammatical, literal point of view. I don't like to get into an argument, but let's just consider it together.

1 Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

This is KJV. A little groundwork, 1 Cor 13, the whole chapter, is talking about love(which KJV translates as charity).

Now, this first verse, like many other verses in this chapter, is a conditional statement. " 'Though' I speak", some translations say " 'If I speak' ".

It is not saying speaking with other tongues sounds like tinkling cymbal. Rather, it is relating spiritual experiences with the topic of this chapter, which is primarily "LOVE."

So it says, "if I speak in tongues, but I don't have love in my heart, then my speaking in tongues is useless, just noise."

If you proceed to Chapter 14, it deals with speaking in tongues. Somewhere, the Apostle Paul says, "I thank my God that I speak in tongues more than ye all!" He speaks in tongues more than the whole of the Corinthian church!

So, why then would he say that speaking in tongues is noisemaking? He would be contradicting himself.

To clarify again, it's clear that what 1 Cor 13:1 is saying is this: "If I don't love/care for other people, and I speak in tongues, then I'm only making noise."

It's like saying, "if I'm telling everybody I'm going to China, and I don't even have a passport, then I'm only making a noise and disturbing myself."

Love is a core christian value. If you don't have love, you're not a true christian.

That's another way of putting it literally, striping off all the figurative expressions.

Read through Chapters 13 and 14, and may God give us deeper understanding.

Praying in tongues is not a gift

Speaking in tongues is a gift.

Praying in tongues na scam, Jesus never said anything about it

Speaking is a gift of the spirit not a fruit which means only few people will have it

Praying in tongues is a must for all baptised Christians is a big scam

You're right in that it's not a fruit of the spirit, I very much agree. There're only 9 of those. Rather it is a gift of the spirit.

You say Jesus never said anything about it, but didn't he say "I shall send the comforter(the Holy Spirit) unto you?"

Did you see where the Bible says, "building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Spirit"? Hope you understand what it means to pray in the spirit? It's same as saying praying in tongues.

Another thing, you say praying in tongues is not a must for all baptized. Do you mean water baptism or spirit baptism? They're two different things. Water Baptism is done for it's significance, as it's analogous to dying(to sin) and resurrecting(to righteousness). That's just the significance of it.

But baptism in the Holy Spirit? The evidence that you see when you get baptized in the Holy Spirit is speaking in other tongues.

When the Holy Spirit was first poured out as recorded in Acts, it is recorded that(paraphrased) "the place was shaken where they were assembled, and there appeared unto them cloven tongues of fire, and it sat upon every one of them, and they spoke with other tongues."

There are many other recorded instances as such.

Bros, Compliment of the season. Trust you and yours are abounding more and more in God's goodness. It's been a while.

As per your statement, Notice Paul never taught interpretation of tongues as a third party thing but to be done by the same one who spoke in tongues. All through 1 Cor 14, interpretation is for the speaker of tongues Paul did the same (spoke and interprete)

Likewise interpretation of tongues was taught in epistles as part of the gift in the spirit, hence the previous knowledge of the interpreter will be irrelevant as we aren't talking about human language which is done through learning process.

Praying in tongues is not a gift

Speaking in tongues is a gift.

Praying in tongues na scam, Jesus never said anything about it

Speaking is a gift of the spirit not a fruit which means only few people will have it

Praying in tongues is a must for all baptised Christians is a big scam

Praying in tongues and speaking in tongues are one and the same. Paul's explanation of tongues showed that. Study Paul's language switch in teaching tongues in 1 Cor 14. Praying in, praying with, speaking in, speaking with, tongues, spirit, Holy Ghost all mean the same as related to tongues. It's a grammar thing no different.

Compliments Sir.

Just out of curiosity, I looked up Jude 1: 20 - 21 and it says But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.

It NEVER mentioned anything about speaking in tongues. Be careful how you lie with the Bible to illustrate your point. Your credibility went down immediately I saw your misinterpretation.

James is not explaining anything different from what Paul explained in 1 Cor 14. In the spirit, in the Holy Ghost. Same thing, it's tongues.

I was once like u but im not ashamed to come out and see i was wrong.

Btw, let me ask you something that might set u free from false teaching of tongues.....

How the one who interpret tongues know what to interpret when the interpreter himself doesn't understand the language or tongues?

Weren't we all, once like that, lmso

Bros, Compliment of the season. Trust you and yours are abounding more and more in God's goodness. It's been a while.

At the bold above, that's false sir.

It say....when you gather to fellowship, let one speak (in tongues) and ANOTHER interpret. The text doesn't suggest only the speaker can interpret, let ANOTHER interpret.

b. It also says, to one is given the gift of tongues and TO ANOTHER, the interpretation of tongues. Again, it doesn't suggest same speaker should interpret.

Just my little cents!

Bro, have you examined the scriptures you quoted properly? Paul never used "Let ANOTHER interpret". The word there is "Let ONE interpret".

27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

Please examine it well.
In all mention of interpret in 1 Cor 14, Paul said the "he"that is, the one who spoke in tongues to interpret.

Vs 5, he, the one who spoke in tongues should interpret.

V 13, he, the one who spoke in tongues should pray to interpret.

Vs 27 is not different.

I want you to examine that again.

That suffices in the situation when the one who speaks is ALSO endured with gift of interpretation, otherwise LET HIM PRAY THAT SAME HE MAY INTERPRET.

This is should line up with 1 Cor 12v10, to ANOTHER is given interpretation of tongues. So the one who speaks may or may not be the same who interpret.

Btw, how does ANOTHER OR ANYONE interpret when or if what is spoken is not understood by a man? 1 cor 14v2
