National president Niger Delta Students Union Government



Niger Delta Students’ Union Government [NIDSUG] is the apex students body in the Niger Delta region that provides effective and administrative leadership for all students from the nine Niger Delta states of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers State in all parts of the country and Diaspora with the main aim of protecting their interests, coordinating their activities and promoting educational development and the socio political values of the region and delivering efficient services by encouraging leadership and entrepreneurship trainings, skills acquisition, Empowerment and scholarship schemes and creative supplementary educational materials aim at preparing them [Niger Delta students] productively for social impacts and community development, aggressive pursuit of life dreams, development of Niger Delta and national transformation.

The union was created in 2009 by the express request of the former president of the federal republic of Nigeria His Excellency Dr. Goodluck E. Jonathan GCFR through the combined leadership of the federal ministry of the Niger Delta affairs and the Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC] led by Chief Godday Orubebe and Chief [Dr.] TiImi Alaibe respectively to cater for the social responsibility of the Niger Delta students. It was on this basis that all the splintered student’s union groups were collapsed into a single one now called the NIGER DELTA STUDENTS UNION GOVERMENT [NIDSUG].

The harmonization of this splintered students union bodies across the Niger Delta region became effective on the 10th January 2010 upon which a Memorandum of Understanding [M.O.U] was created by the Niger Delta Development Commission that is binding on them, the ministry of Niger Delta affairs, the nine Niger Delta governors, all federal government agencies and corporate organizations and individuals in the Niger Delta Region to cater for the social welfare and responsibility of the Niger Delta students under the platform called NIDSUG.



The union has structures across the Niger Delta tertiary institutions and other allied tertiary institutions in the Western, Eastern and Northern part of the country. The leadership structure is categorized into four (4) namely, the National leadership which is made up of the National executive council, National senate council and a quasi-stakeholders forum, the Zonal leadership oversees the affairs of the Niger Delta students in the zone outside the Niger Delta region which includes western zone, eastern zone and northern zones. the State leadership which is in every part of the nine Niger Delta states that provides administrative leadership for all Niger Delta students in each of the states. And finally, the campus chapter leadership which is responsible for the coordination and effective leadership of Niger Delta students in the campuses.



The office of the National president of the Union has rotated systematically across the various states in Niger Delta. It began with Comr. Genesis I. Jeremiah the first Pioneering National President who hailed from Rivers State. Comr. Genesis Jeremiah Successfully handed over to Comr. Tonbara Yalah Michael of Bayelsa State. A successful election victory in 2012. Tonbara Yalah Michael the expiration of his tenure conducted election that produced Comr. Obada Akpomiemie of Delta State as National president, in 2014 who later successfully handed over the Comr. Smart Edom of Cross Rivers State.
