How do you discover what has been in existence, discovered and inhabited millions of years ago?

Re: Did Mungo Park Actually 'Discover' The River Niger? by Hintona(f): 11:13am On Mar 19, 2021
The Greeks since the time of Ptolemy already had knowledge of the river Niger.

And also the Arabs especially one named ibn Batuta knew of the river Niger but they thought it was an extension or branch of the nile.

Then on the 21st of July 1796 came along Mungo Park who supposedly "discovered" the Niger. Even though the name of this great river was called JOLIBA by the natives.

The locals were using the river before he came. You cannot discover what is already in existence.

Mungo Park was the first true Christian to enter that part. So he indeed discovered the land and its people in the eyes of God for the first time.

Which God?
God created that river and you are saying Mungo Park helped God discover what God created.

Who Actually 'discovered' the River Niger?

It's widely believed that Mungo Park 'discovered' the River Niger.

However, there are some unanswered questions to the 'discovery'.

Firstly, history had it that he 'asked' the locals (villagers) for direction to the river. If he was the one that actually 'discovered' the river, how come some people directed him there? Have they not been there before him? How can some people direct him to where he wanted to 'discover'?

Secondly, the locals are believed to be bathing, fishing and fetching water from the 'undiscovered' river. If he was the one that actually 'discovered' the River first, he should be the one to first bath or swim in the river. But this is not so.

Lastly, while some people believe that he discovered the River 'mouth', others believe he discovered it for the British. Why is there no generally accepted direct answer to the question "What did Mungo Park discover"?

It's because they think Africans have no history..
A blatant claim

Okay this is going to be a long one, but bear with me first.

Mungo Park is credited as the discoverer of the River Niger for more than one reason.

Yes locals lived and traded on its banks for centuries, but the river was not added to the map we use till date because of the locals but him.

Oh yes, your country is still being mapped out from the mold left by the colonials.

The river was known by another name to the locals but guess what, the name on the map is River Niger! grin As quoted by guess again, Mungo Park! grin

You trek ya own and rediscover it along with new boundaries for ur own personal country too. tongue tongue

My grandfather used to say, "People have been fishing in the River Niger long before Mungo Park was born".

So, as you can see, Mungo Park did not discover River Niger.

The locals have been fishing there even before Mungo Park's grandfather was born.

My Broda, anyone who is actually studying now and developing self capacity would have known by now that the African history and Nigeria precisely had been twisted and misconstrued to fit into the selfish greedy purpose of the Britons, who colonized us.

There's so much in our history that we haven't and aren't been told, taught in our educational system.

I personally read books from the British library online and I get to learn about things I was taught the contrary in my early school days. So it's very important that we study and read widely, to expand our perspective.

On this matter, Mungo Park didn't discover no river, he only probably discovered a trade route for the British.

...and he was just 35. He had achieved so much even at that age. An explorer per excellence. Several people who had done the unexpected and risked their lives have made the sacrifices for the benefits we're enjoying today.

Guys of nowadays are mainly after making millions without working hard or without working at all, doing yahoo and duping people while girls have turned slay Queens instead of emulating the likes of Mary slessor, olufunmilayo ransome kuti, or Queen amina of zaria.

Explorers already knew about the Niger river before Mungo Park. What he did was to discover the flow of the river. They thought it flowed in the opposite direction until Mungo Park explored it better.

Point of correction ,Mungo Park did not discover River Niger rather he discovered the source of the River Niger which is the Futa Djallon Mountains . The river has always been in existence. He only traced the source of the river. A lot of us have this misconception of saying he discovered the River Niger

Hell No.

River Niger existed from creation so Mango or Mengo park theory is a thrash. People lived in the river bank before Mango park or Mango garage was born.

These people created the mess we are in today in Nigeria so I hate seen names like Mango whatever or Luggard bollock etc.

combination of two journeys, Scotsman Mungo Park's story of his first trip in 1795 as a 24-year old, and again in 1805, provided Europeans with their first reliable description of the interior of the continent. The first trip was full of an endearing vulnerability and the heroic generosity of a fit young man, while the second was one of Conradian tragedy, murder, and mayhem. Despite starvation, imprisonment, and frequent illness, he managed to keep a record. Though he failed in the object of his mission-to chart the course of the Niger River-he did succeed in exploring West Africa and opening in trade routes. His first-hand experiences of tribal justice, gold mining, and the slave trade are recorded, as well as his own understated heroism, a story of courage, open-hearted friendship, and betrayal. His vivid record of his travels brought a new image of Africa to the European public, though the continent claimed him for itself in death. Travels is still considered the most readable of all the classics of African exploration
