Nigerians confusing themselves from time immemorial. The narration says Mungo Park embarked on a journey to know where River Niger ends after knowing its source. It is right to say he discovered the river, because at time Africa was a wilderness. There were no road network to ease exploration up North. European Penetration of Nigeria areas was mostly done through Lagos shores. So discovering where the river leads to, was a great breakthrough. Thus began the domination and exploitation of Niger areas. In summary Mungo Park discovered river Niger and its areas. Pls note that the arears include the environments and inhabitants. 1 Like |

/ Yes. Mungo Park discovered River Niger because the history books we read were written by oyibo people who like to tell stories the way that benefits them. Likewise, Christopher Columbus discovered America even though native Indians were living there before he arrived. They even fought to take the land away from the Indians. But Christopher discovered it! We forget that the perspective of the history we read was that of an explorer reporting back to Her Majesty. But we also ran with the storyline. While at it, don't forget that everything black is bad and everything white is associated with good. Most of you are still running with the narratives because of brainwashing that started from kindergarten. Satan is a blackman with two horns while God is a white-bearded grandfather. Go figure! / 1 Like |

Ademola47: You have to understand that when white people say "discovered" that's white supremacy statement. But in reality they're not talking to us, rather they'retalking to themselves about THEIR achievement. The natives all the way from Gambia, Mali, Benue, Anambra to Niger Delta had been fishing along the river Niger thousands of years before Mungo Park was born and as you pointed out, he (Mungo Park) employed the service of the natives to show him along the river. But because British people gave us education (which was part and parcel of colonialism) they removed us from history and instead superimposed their achievements on top of African achievements. If we weren't colonized, you'll have had a different version of the history about how our African ancestors discovered the river and not Mungo Park. Nothing on this earth was discovered by white people until relatively recently. They couldn't have discovered anything because they were the most backward people on earth. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Munamu:colonisation has really dealt with this one. Guy the explanation here is that , there were some people at that souce and using the rivers before ur God came all the way from where ever. I've found a river in Africa called Niger. But has been called oshimili long before the 35 year old man came around. Am sure that if they told u that he invented it ,u will still believe it. Emancipate urself from slavery. Gradually Africa will re discover and assert herself |

Brainless commentators, Mungo Park actually discovered the River Niger from source to end in the 17 to early 18th century from the Guinean High land to the Delta Areas(called Nigeria Niger Delta areas)of the Atlantic ocean with a distance of more tha 2957 miles from source to end. so for you to say a local man or woman living in a village around the river area is the discoverer shows brainless lack of knowledge. 1 Like |

Nigeriabiafra82: Different rivers flows into river niger...omambala is just one of them. You are right that different people call river niger different names but river niger doesn't start from Anambra state. It seems you are right, the river flows through onitsha According to wikipedia. Its source is in the Guinea Highlands in southeastern Guinea. It runs in a crescent through Mali, Niger, on the border with Benin and then through Nigeria, discharging through a massive delta, known as the Niger Delta (or the Oil Rivers), into the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.

What they told us in primary school was he discovered the source of the river(where it arises from) not the river's existence itself. The indigenes of the area have known the river even before his great grand father was born. I know he didn't discover the river ofcourse, but the source of the river maybe I can relax my disbelief a little on this part. 1 Like |
