tollyboy5: Bravo! ' excuse not to have STEEL INDUSTRY' You hit the nail on the head. That is what can bring full turnaround industrialisation. - imagine a Steel Industry in every State. - Imagine 24/7 Light by Disco(NEPA) as they are called.Rather than NERC,GEMCO and Disco sharing money and bringing bills for darkness. - imagine Textile industry all over Nigeria. - imagine Rice Production industry all over Nigeria. You don't need to tell us Nigeria is on the rise to become a super power! But what you see now is opposite.Where everyone is trying to be a Crude Oil Merchant, producing nothing, yet smiling to the bank.Youth are being tied down with Loans instead of Grants for a business take off.Universities are locked down because those in authority have no better ideas of how to move forward and the executive and Legislatures kept mute as they are not concerned. we got a long way to go. 8 Likes 2 Shares |

Who told you steel is cheaper? Why spend that much money when other alternative materials can be used to accomplish the job. Most buildings collapse because of the sub standard materials used by contractor and not working to site plan. E.g you will see a contractor using 1 cement, 7 sand and 9 granite (1:7:9) for slab and columns when he should use 1:2:4 and some will use 10mm reinforcement instead of 16mm, in such situation the building will collapse. Also, quality check is not carried. There are a lot of examples and scenarios. Aconomist: 3 Likes |

Ikengawo:bricks and blocks have different properties. Like I said earlier they also have advantages and disadvantages. Timber absorbs carbon dioxide thereby reducing the carbon content in the atmosphere and there are different types of timbers used in construction. It's not only the ones that the local market sells that are used 2 Likes |

anochuko01: With th urbanization of the world growing exponentially, the construction of net zero carbon emission building is critically important. Let me put it this way, the trees help to remove carbon from the atmosphere so too will using timber in construction. Deforestation is a whole different aspect entirely because whether timber is used or not in construction, the world is expanding, people are clearly unused lands for their project so Deforestation is/will still happen. Using timber in construction aids in mitigating the damage 3 Likes 1 Share |

I have always wondered this...... Especially for lintel and pillars (does not need any concrete again). I believe it has to do with our very conservative nature- not willing to learn or try new things... Just look at the way we stick to toyota when there are several other good cars. Always tick to the norm or average. 3 Likes |

While steel needs to be importedIf you know the reason, why ask? I don't think there is any other angle to the answer apart from maybe the lack of expertise when it comes to steel utilization. The countries which use steel also produce it. We don't have any production plants here so we'll stick to what we can easily source. |
Re: Why Don't Builders Use Steel In Nigeria? by AfroKnight: 5:43am On Dec 21, 2020 |
Op, Steel is more expensive than reinforced concrete in terms of both cost of material and cost of labour/workmanship. Like a couple of people have mentioned, many times buildings collapse due to inferior mixes and inferior materials. This is the fault of the contractor & client who think they are saving cost. Also, some people decide to ignore structural design and load the building any how they like to “maximise” space. It is not the “choice” of the type of material that is the problem. It is the grade/quality of the materials and the load distribution, both which have been altered during construction. 1 Like |

lexy2014: that's like saying "why go out and hustle we can die at anytime". But everyday everybody is having one form of hustle or the other. People still die everyday. If the timber is coated with fire resistance coating and you live with safety precautions which by nature we do anyways. What's the point of worrying. We have fire incidents, how many times have the concrete and blocks stop the contents of the buildinga from going off in flames. Each building materials have a certain range of heat they can withstand, once the heat is above that, they crumble. be it steel, concrete, timber, glass etc 4 Likes |

Yankee101: what are the recycled materials you are speaking of?? What properties of this materials will trap carbon atoms within themselves? Whether we cut trees to use for timber or not, those trees will still be cut and then land used for something due to the exponential growth of urbanization. This way using timber for construction helps to reduce the damage. All the roads being constructed, the trees that were cut to make way for that, how have we replaced them? 1 Like |

emae009: Sir/madam you better think of worse of worst scenario. You are living in an environment that is crazily unstable and spiritually charged to like 500% or more. The best is to use zero maintenance on the long run.Have seen building built with concrete that the owner's children refuse to maintain and they collected rents for years. You cannot do that if u use wood or steel. The materials would force you to do maintenance within 5 years. 2 Likes |

searchng4love:do you even know the meaning of a net zero carbon emission building? it has to do with a complete life cycle analysis of the building, from it's construction stage to it's demolition stage it is not habitable again. timber used for building leads to deforestation which is more harmful to the environment and leads to environmental pollution. 3 Likes |

Aconomist:Point of correction, in Nigeria we use reinforced concrete instead of the concrete u said. Reinforced concrete is what we all in column which pple call pillars. Steel is too expensive for it to be used for building in Nigeria. U have to consider d environment u are before thinking of what to use, nd steel is good for detachable houses which are not common over here. Considering our environment, reinforced concrete is still d best option nd it's not d reason why building collapse in Nigeria. There are so many factors to consider for that 2 Likes |

Omoikarekimire: It's clear you don't understand. Steel will only rust when exposed to atmospheric conditions. Most steel come precoated from the factory. Besides using steel doesn't mean the interior and exterior of the building will be steel. It can be cover with whatever material you wish. so how will the steel need maintenance. When we talk about steel it's not the 10, 12, 16mm reinforcement bars. We are talking about I-section high grade steel bars. Same goes for timber, not your normal timber they sell to you at the timer market that is not properly cured. Have you heard of CLT (Crossed Laminated Timber). There are so many types of timber used in construction. FYI a properly seasoned and cured timber can stand for decades with much damage. You're comfortable with what you know and that's okay. But saying steel and timber needs regular maintenance is just laughable 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Aconomist:May I summaries it to three reason: - Steel production is very low in the country, therefore costly. - The community we found ourselves aren't use to it; -Most importantly, the inability of steel structure to withstand fire accidents for a long period of time in time when compared to the concrete.
