Steel building's are damn expensive to build and besides, Nigerian architecture is too shallow. 1 Like |

Industrial capacity is almost non existent so comparative costs are high. We are not serious about development. You simply cannot advance swiftly and develop expansively without metallurgy. Case in question is the astronomical costs of the present rail infrastructure and the effects in ticket prices which will make roll out and uptake slow and unattractive to independent investors. If steel was a household Nigerian consumer product individuals will build rail lines, communities will build rail lines, companies will build rail lines for their own use just as they build factories and commission trucks and articulated vehicles that are less resilient and economical less viable. We simply have not recognised how great industrialized nations were founded. 3 Likes 1 Share |

IkpuMmadu: Not intelligent. He is simply appealing to the reasons why the problem exists. We cannot house ourselves quickly and effectively enough because we donot use steel. We have sprawling, congested cities because we cannot build vertically because of steel. So we expand further away into the countryside at alarming pace while in other nations cities are clustered and have limits thus preserving transportation links a bit longer. Two cases. Look at Abuja. Instead of promoting and encouraging multi rise buildings that can keep more people within the cities they rather want the sprawl so gridlock coming into the city everyday when they know they cannot build enough roads quickly. Second. The Lagos metro. Going on for gazzilion years now. If steel was the second material of choice that work will have advanced much faster because its engineering is less intrusive, more flexible and economically stable. You can buy the steel needed for a project in fifty years to come to beat inflation. You cannot buy the cement needed for a project in six months time due to decay. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

searchng4love:Most of the buildings in US are wooden structures. Timber has its own advantages too. Unfortunately, we're not ripe for such due to the haphazard way we handle immergencies like fire outbreak etc. Though, here in Nigeria, we have wooden structures too but very few, these type of structures could be found at Transit village behind 1004 flats, Victoria Island some years ago. |

Aconomist:The same reason Nigerians prefer Toyota over other car brands is why they chose concrete. Concrete can absorb many errors. Like I use to say that "Concrete is so forgiving" Also, kindly check our civil engineering (this is the aspect of building that handles structural design not Builders) curriculum you will see that it's jaded. No advancement. Basically everything about design in Nigerian varsity is "Design of Concrete Structures". Steel structures are majorly brushed over. So we lack technical know how on steel building design. Steel companies too are cheat, go do market survey. You will hardly get mill certificate for most of these steel, majorly because they are not what they claimed to be. Buy 16mm bar (that supposed to be 16mm in dia and 40ft ie 12m in length) you will meet far less dimensions and same with steel profile needed for steel construction. 1. Concrete is more general here than steel based on technical know how for concrete is more rampant than for steel. You can get a concrete technician/artisans few doors away but not same for steel. 2. Varsities have refused to upgrade their curriculum from traditional concrete design. 3. Cheat in the steel industry 4. Concrete is more forgiving than steel. It absorb many errors than steel in structural design. Collapse will be more with steel at this stage for Nigeria.. Concrete have really covered and saved many engineers even professionally from their design errors. My humble submission Mac (R.Engr) 7 Likes |

emae009:have you heard about sustainable practices in the built environment.? Usage of timbers for sole purpose of building and construction is not a sustainable practice. no matter how you try to defend it. when you talk about zero carbon emission building, you think in terms of green buildings, improving the energy performance of buildings, reducing the energy consumption of building system e.g Hvacs system. and most importantly making use of better building materials. e. g improving the u and h values of walls, windows e.t.c, better insulation materials. also you can think about improving the construction techniques for building e.g 3d printing which leads to low energy consumption. clearing up of forest to create environment for building is in fact one of the problems of urbanization, but complicating the problem more by relying on timbers for building purposes is not logical and also not sustainable. 2 Likes |

Using of steel is limited. Like in the construction of skyscrapers steel can only be used on the exterior. It is light and not strong enough. |

well said and badly said yeah clients but it's majorly budget , yes most people buy everything ,when i collect cooperative whereas educated people already have a concept in mind , it also involves concrete Building standard certification stopped in 1802 , anybody can build anything, even local town planning offices and officers won't bother to inspect what you are doing as long you you sort it people are poorly informed about this type ( i seen people who mocked aregbe's skeleton because of the buildings looked just like the picture above, steel all through) of building, they've never seen , heard or thought about it talk about scarcity of materials if you have to import then it's not worth it to some people finally money , MUuuuulaaa emae009: 2 Likes |

Steel Vs Concrete Most buildings that are made, are structurally made from steel. Why would an architect or designer choose one material over the other? Concrete buildings offer many safety advantages over steel skeleton structures. Compared to steel, concrete can endure very high temperatures for long periods and offers excellent protection from explosions. (Burj Khalifa, Dubai – 330,000 cubic meters of concrete used) Building with concrete is also very fast. When time means money this makes it a particularly attractive option. Unlike steel, it is also possible for large sections to be pre-fabricated off site. This again speeds up construction meaning less time developing and more time using the structure. Companies also offer concrete repairs which tend to be a lot quicker, simpler and cheaper than other repairs on steel structures. Steel on the other hand, in terms of cost, is generally a cheaper option. However, the price of steel can fluctuate a lot more than concrete and it is also generally accepted that the cost of insuring a steel building is higher because of the differences in safety. Steel offers architects a far greater array of options when it comes to building design. The strength to weight ratio of steel is higher than any other (affordable) construction material. Steel offers aesthetics that concrete may never be able to. There are positives and negatives to both concrete and steel. But why choose one over another? With two materials offering such diverse positives then it would be wrong to apply them together, right? Wrong. Reinforcing concrete with steel has major benefits. Reinforced concrete with steel is by far, a lot better than either concrete or steel separately. Concrete on its own has one major downfall and that is that it is extremely strong in compression but has little to no strength when there is tension. Rebar is used within concrete to give it the ability to carry tensile loads on a structure. To keep protecting the environment, reinforcing steel is now commonly used. In the UK rebar is 100% recycled scrap steel and at the end of its life steel can be recovered, recycled and used again. Although some concrete buildings may not look great, who’s to say that in the future decorative coatings and innovative designs cannot lead the way in construction? So for safety and cost effectiveness over the long term, concrete reigns supreme despite the need for on-going maintenance and repair. This is of course why it is the natural choice of many of the buildings that we work on where safety is paramount. 4 Likes 1 Share |
