As the general elections draw nearer, a group of retired military officers, made up of Brigadier-Generals and their equivalent in the Navy, Airforce and the Police, are now under security watch, following their recent meeting in Kaduna, details of which are yet to be known to the Federal Government.

A reliable security source told the Saturday Tribune on Friday that the action became necessary following unfavourable security report that got into the presidency from the gathering of the retired Generals.

The source revealed that security report from the gathering indicated that the former Generals were said to be putting heads together to rally supports for one of the presidential candidates in the forthcoming elections.

“The retired Generals who attended the Kaduna meeting, are under strict security watch. We don’t know their mission and motives. We have been trying to find out, but they are not telling the truth. What they said they called the meeting for was not what we found out, but we are analysing the reports from the meeting and as well monitoring them,” the source declared.

The source further hinted that the minutes of the meeting of the retired Generals were already with the Department of State Security Services (SSS), the police command and other intelligence units of the military, navy and airforce for further scrutiny.

“We don’t expect such act that is inimical to the security of the nation from such senior citizens. As citizens of this country, they have freedom of association under the constitution but such freedom of association should not be at variance with the security of the nation; we are not accusing the retired Generals of anything, but we are watching them; nobody is above the law of the land,” a top security official told Saturday Tribune on Friday.

“Look at how some of these retired Generals in a particular political party are behaving with their unguarded utterances, go and read an interview one of them granted to one of the national dailies recently. This is uncalled for at this critical anal of Nigeria, nobody is above the law. If we have any reason to invite any of them, we will do; we are committed to the security of the country,” the source further explained.

It was even learnt that some of the Generals were behind the Northern Political Leaders’ Forum (NPLF)’s insistence that President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must sign an agreement on power rotation before it would support his presidential ambition.

Efforts to speak with the spokesperson of the SSS, Mrs. Maryln Ogar, proved abortive as her phone line was not going through when contacted, but another senior officer, who wanted anonymity, confirmed the development, saying “nearly every Nigerian is under watch, not the retired Generals alone.”

When a gathering doesn't favor them, they start crying, If the meeting was to endorse the clueless GEJ, there is no need to place them under security watch. But now that they have feelers that they are gathering to endorse Buhari, they become security risk to the country. Does this make any sense?

Even if they are there to endorse a candidate, don't they have a right to do so? These are retired warriors, they can't be intimidated except if GEJ will be consumed.

Another lame attempt by team GEJ to denigrate Nigerians with good intentions, to at least support a candidate who will bring back sanity into our national life.
