Despite the fact that the FRSC has made it a habit to always preach against the usual “Yuletide rush”, it is quite unfortunate that many drivers still do not heed such warnings during this period of the year. According to new press reports, not less than 17 people have recently lost their lives in a horrific car crash that occurred earlier this week on Abuja-Lokoja highway. What is even more heartbreaking about the report is the fact that eyewitnesses say the accident was solely caused by over-speeding.

Media reports and eyewitnesses narrated that the terrible incident occurred at about 5:00 pm on Tuesday 22nd of December 2020 in Irepene community of Lokoja, Kogi State. It was also reported that the motor accident involved a Toyota HiAce commercial bus which collided with a big luxurious bus coming from the other end of the road. According to eyewitness accounts, 15 people reportedly died at the very scene of the tragic accident while 2 others later died at the hospital. The press reports also claim that several other passengers of the two buses sustained varying degrees of body injuries and they are currently receiving medical attention at a hospital in Kogi state.

As of the time of writing this report, the Kogi state FRSC boss has confirmed the details of the incident to be true. Meanwhile, the FRSC commander of Lagos-Ibadan corridor has recently shared on national TV the preparations which the agency is making to help curb tragic crashes during this festive season.

It was a sad day as my neighbours son was among those that lost his life.

May their souls rest in peace and I pray God to give the family the strength to bear the loss.

Hiace buses are very unsafe for travelling, it safety rating is poor and most of it accident fatality rate is too high. Whichever vehicle one is travelling in, overspeeding should be avoided.

After escaping Covid-19 and insecurity, only to be claimed by accident on the eve of Christmas. We shall not die prematurely. Meanwhile, Rest in peace to the departed.
