How To Remove Candle Wax From Almost Everything by dee45: 11:23am On Dec 26, 2020
Accidents happen and sometimes stray candle wax finds it’s way onto your favourite things. Here is our handy guide to the best ways to remove melted wax from tables, clothing, glass and much more.

Candle wax spills can happen to the best of us. While it can be devastating to watch the molten wax make it’s way from your candle, across your brand new table, on to your favourite rug via the leg of your linen trousers, there are fixes available.

It’ll take some elbow grease, a little patience and the right tools, but thankfully there are plenty of ways to remove melted wax from almost anything.

How To Remove Wax From Wood

Glowing candles are the perfect way to set the mood for a romantic dinner, but the dripping wax can cause ugly marks on wooden surfaces.

The melted wax itself isn’t hot enough to damage furniture, but the colour can create ugly stains. We recommend removing the wax as soon as possible.

Grab your hairdryer and hold it over the wax stain until it begins to melt. Keep the hairdryer a few inches away from the surface while you do this.
Using a soft cloth, gently wipe the wax away. Don’t be tempted to chip away at the wax as this caused cause real damage to the wooden surface underneath.
Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar into 1 cup of water.
Dip the cloth into the vinegar mixture and use it to wipe away any leftover wax.
Use a quality furniture polish to restore the wood to it’s former glory.
How To Remove Melted Wax From Carpets & Rugs

There’s no need to rip up your carpet or throw away the antique Persian rug if wax is accidentally spilled on it. You just need and iron and a paper bag…

Once hardened carefully pick off the larger bits of wax being carefully not to pull out the threads of the carpet or rug.
Place a plain paper bag (with nothing printed on it) over the stain and gently iron over the top on a low heat. The remaining wax should absorb into the paper.
Use a high quality carpet cleaner to remove any remnants of the stain.
How To Remove Wax Drips From Painted Walls

Getting melted wax onto your walls isn’t uncommon – blowing candles out too hard can easily splatter the wax onto your perfectly painted Farrow&Ball walls.

Thankfully getting rid of melted wax from the walls of your home doesn’t mean repainting the entire space.

Grab a few paper towels from the kitchen and place them over the offending wax.
Using an iron on a low heat, gently press down over the towels to melt the wax, allowing it to be absorbed by the paper.
Wash the area with hot soapy water to remove any remaining residue.
How to Remove Melted Wax From Fabric

Did you blow out the birthday candles a light hard, sending wax flying across your new table cloth? No worries, just follow these steps to remove the wax completely.

Chuck the wax covered fabric in the freezer for at least 30mins, or until the wax has hardened.
Carefully pick off the larger bits of wax.
Lay some plain paper over the stain, and gently iron on a low heat until all the wax has been absorbed by the paper.
If the fabric is washable finish by applying a quality stain remover and washing as instructed.

Top Tip: You can also try gently wiping off the wax using a gentle makeup remover.

How To Remove Wax From Hair

Long hair and candles aren’t always the best of friends, but there’s no need to panic if you get wax in your hair.

Wax At The Tip

Place the tips of your hair into a bowl of boiling water, allowing the wax to melt off. Then wash the hair as usual.

Wax Near The Root

Massage the hair with olive oil to help loosen the wax.
Being careful not to burn yourself, use warm water (as warm as you can stand) to wash the hair.

Few things can transform our home like the hypnotic flickering of candle light or a specific scent that we associate with relaxation, tranquility, freshness or the heady aroma of the Holidays. It’s common practice to use scented candles, plug ins and fragrance sprays on a daily basis in order to relax, to conjure up a romantic atmosphere, or to simply mask an undesirable smell.

The question is – are these artificial fragrances safe for us or are they adding to our daily toxic chemical burden?

The good news is that if you know what to seek out, and what to avoid, there are safe and non-toxic options available on our shop.

The bad news? Buy the wrong product and you could be exposing you and your family to chemicals that, amongst other things, are suspected of interfering with our hormones, may produce asthma in otherwise healthy individuals and even transform the structure of our DNA.

What To Avoid When Choosing Candles & Scented Products

Scented candles, synthetic oils, plug ins and air fresheners release microscopic particles into the air that could potentially affect our health if regularly inhaled. Remember, pregnant women and young children are more vulnerable to constant chemical exposure.

The most worrisome chemicals released by these products are:

Fragrance chemicals: The main chemicals of concern in all of these items are fragrance chemicals.  Due to proprietary rights, companies do not have to disclose the specific chemicals that they use in their fragrances.  However, considering that up to 80% of the product can be made up of fragrance chemicals and that any given fragrance can be made up of more than 100 chemicals, it’s important to know what you and your family are potentially inhaling.
Synthetic musks: These have the ability to interfere with our hormones and build up inside of our bodies, as well as in breast milk.
Phthalates: These chemicals are responsible for binding the ‘smell’ to the product itself (the candle, the oil etc).  The problem?  They are carcinogenic and can disrupt hormone activity, reduce sperm count, cause reproductive malformation, and have been linked to liver and breast cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Prenatal fetal exposure to phthalates has been linked to increased risk of autism, ADHD, and neurological disorders.
Formaldehyde: Plug-in air fresheners have been found to produce considerable levels of formaldehyde: a known ‘human carcinogen’ linked with cancers of the nose and throat. To a lesser degree it can also cause sore throats, coughs, scratchy eyes and nosebleeds.
Paraffins: Most scented candles are made out of paraffin. Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct that will release acetone, benzene and toluene, all of which are known carcinogens, into the air you breath when burned (these are the same chemicals given off by diesel fuel fumes).  It also aggravates respiratory problems especially for those who have asthma and allergies.

If inhaled regularly, other chemicals commonly found in air fresheners (especially sprays) can increase the risk of developing asthma by 50%. Furthermore, women who used air fresheners in their homes or offices during pregnancy were significantly more likely to have babies who suffered from wheezing, lung infections and earaches.

The bottom line is, if you really enjoy burning candles or if you love scenting your home every single day, consider switching to these non-toxic air freshener alternatives :

Open your windows: Let fresh air circulate and cleanse your home. It’s horrifying to think that indoor air can contain over 500 chemicals in it, so let that air flow in.
Decorate with indoor plants. Certain plants are able to absorb airborne toxins and pump out clean fresh oxygen
Scent using ingredients from your fridge/ garden: Simmer water with your favorite smelling citrus and/or herbs and allow the smell to circulate your home. I like lime and rosemary sprigs or orange slices with cloves.
Buy safer candles. Choose candles made with beeswax and cotton wicks.  Make sure they are  100% beeswax since it is common for manufacturers to mix paraffin and beeswax. Coconut oil candles and non GMO soy candles are another safe alternative.
Use natural smell absorbers: Baking soda acts like a sponge which absorbs bad smells naturally. Place baking soda in a bowl (or a couple of bowls if the smell is strong) inside the offending room.

I hate it when my clothes get dirty with paraffin

I know another way. You can remove stubborn stains with a heated iron. Layout a paper towel or white cloth on the ironing board, place the item with the stain, and cover with a cotton cloth. Iron over the stained area, periodically changing the absorbent bottom layer. After the procedure, the garment should be washed in the normal mode suitable for fabric. And in general, it all depends on what kind of candles you soiled the thing. Beeswax or paraffin is more challenging to clean than wax made from special natural materials. Gracie Moon Scents makes just such candles.
