Consensus talks among ACN, CPC, ANPP still on - Ribadu *Emirs, Northern leaders reject Buhari

Monday, March 28, 2011

THE main opposition political parties in the country, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progress Change (CPC) and the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) are still discussing the issue of a consensus presidential candidate among themselves, ACN standard-bearer in April's presidential election, Nuhu Ribadu, confirmed in Minna, Niger State, on Sunday.

Malam Ribadu, who fielded questions from newsmen at the Minna International Airport on arrival in the Niger State capital for the kick-off of his presidential campaign, said the consensus talks were "real, alive and on the front burner."

He said the consensus talks were about getting the best candidate to rule Nigeria, adding that "we are talking about progressives coming together for at least one individual to confront the Peoples Democratic Party."

"We are talking about a progressive candidate, someone who is going to come and solve the problems of our people," adding that the consensus matter was beyond a political party because it was a national project. Ribadu said that it required the support and contributions of all progressive elements in the country.

"We are not seeking for a northern consensus candidate but for a person that is capable of solving the country's multifaceted problems.

"We believe that Nigeria is one and our problem as a nation is the same. The problem that is confronting the North is the same that is confronting the South. We need the best, the most competent president that will come and solve the problem of the country. If he is from northern Nigeria, so be it. We are looking for the best person to lead this country."

Ribadu, who was received at the airport by a large number of party faithful, said the "the broom revolution is on.

The broom revolution is taking over the country," assuring the electorate that "ACN government will effect a change, we are going to do what is good for our country."The people will see the difference when we take over the leadership of this country, we are going to give a leadership that the people will trust and believe in."

He maintained that the ACN government "will work for the development of the country."

Accompanied by Mr Fola Adeola, his running mate and the chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, Ribadu later addressed a rally at the polo field in the state capital.

Meanwhile, reports emanating from the recent campaign tours of northern states by some leaders of the zone, who have been meeting traditional and religious leaders on behalf of President Jonathan, indicated that traditional rulers from the three geopolitical zones of the North have rejected the choice of the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari.

A team led by eminent northern leaders, including Dr Shettima Mustapha, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai and Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, among others, had been going round the states of the North in the last one week, with a message of cooperation and collaboration between the North and the South-South in the next election.

Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that reports emanating from the tours indicated that the northern political establishment was not in support of Buhari.

The zone was also being persuaded, according to sources, by the declaration of President Jonathan that he would not seek re-election in 2015.

Sources said Buhari's alleged refusal to explain his agenda to any of the top political and religious leaders in the North had also hampered his perception among them.

One (Buhari) down another (Ribadu) to follow. Nigeria is not Northern Republic of Nigeria. It is simply Nigeria, where every region should be able to participate in governance at the highest level. After more than 35 years of leadership out of about 50 years, the North has nothing to show for ruling the country that long. They should, therefore, take a back seat for some time and let others be tested.

The respect Buhari commands with the common man, none of the emirs can boast of that, who cares about the emirs when the people know what they want?

the emirs are important and collectively should have the authority to decide what is right for the north, its historical and it should apply today, we can't afford to get ourselves in a ditch for the sake of a failing concept

Not true. The Emirs will never be in a position to force candidates on their people. These should be discouraged - same goes to the Igwes, Obas and chiefs.

This is Democracy the power is with the masses and Buhari holds the swaga as long as Nigeria today is concern. We are ready kick out corruption and its manifestation.

Look at this muppet!

Your candidate GEJ goes around promising Northerners 'juicy positions' in his cabinet. He's made a pledge to step aside in 2015 for a Northerner. His godfather (Obasanjo) even hinted to all and sundry in the finale of his campaign that power will revert back to the North.
So what you're really jubilating about now is another 12 years of PDP misrule. 4 years for GEJ, then Sambo gets another 8 years (He's a northerner so it shouldn't be an uphill task like what Jonathan faces).

You clowns aren't weakening the north, you're appeasing them temporarily and strengthening them for the long run while simultaneously voting in the most corrupt party in Africa.

The smart people will vote for change. We'll use Buhari to sweep these PDP rascals away.

Join us now or be prepared to shamefully confess to your children how you helped to sabotage Nigeria's future.

Every progressive sees this as no surprise.Buhari's supporters are not politicians or Emirs but the Nigerian people.

I only pray that the election does not get rigged because even the Emirs will not be spared if involved in rigging. The poor are angry and need change!!!

Whoever has a problem with rigging should go the court for a proper address of their grievance as that is the only legitimate option provided to such people.

There is no room for lynching or violence after the election results is announced, we are a civil society and so shall it be.

They are acting under pressure and obviously trying to hang on to their job. The governors appoints and sacks emirs. Didn't the same governors ordered the emirs not to receive Buhari and deny him courtesy visits?

This is nothing but abuse of authority, a common PDP theme.

Really? But he and Buhari have held several meetings with Ciroma's NPLF in the past week over the consensus thing. We all know what Ciroma wants! LOL!
Shekarau is the only one who seems to have made excuses not to attend at least one meeting.

Dude, the quality of your posts is falling fast, you are way better than this.
Can you back up any of the words in bold with verifiable concrete facts and proofs? Otherwise you will be seen as having joined the ranks of NL's rumour starters.
