In this country, a certain former president took loans to pay salaries & today, you see him as a "hero". Here you see a president taking loans to build massive rail line infrastructures across the country & you think he's mortgaging the country to China. Many of you have criticized the cost of rail transportation but then forget that the loan taken to build those infrastructures must be repaid through same means.

That's exactly what the USA does, which is why they are the heaviest indebted nation on earth.

In return, they got a developed country.

Development is not free. Someone's gotta pay for it.

Are you serious?

The USA developed with local and international investment in its local currency. Where will Nigeria get the dollars to repay the debt?

How will Nigeria repay an $11 billion railway, who will use the railway poor Nigerian or poor farmers? Will Nigeria now have to introduce another rail subsidy like the fuel and electricity subsidies.

Nigeria should take foreign loans to complete the Ajaokuta Steel plant, build gold mines and repair the three refineries, the proceeds from these productive institutions can be channeled into building service infrastructures using local currency. Nigeria can export steel, refined oil, and gold.

African Reliance on Foreign Debt is ‘Madness,’ Warns Credit Suisse CEO Tidjane Thiam
Swiss bank’s CEO backs view that a new debt crisis could be developing in the region

Credit Suisse Group AG Chief Executive Tidjane Thiam says it is “madness” for African nations to rely on loans in foreign currencies to fund vital infrastructure including roads, power and clean water.

Lenders in African nations must instead find domestic savings to invest in local projects, said the Ivory Coast-born banker who took charge of Zurich-based Credit Suisse in June.

Mr. Thiam’s warning comes after countries on the continent where he was born sold $11 billion of foreign-currency bonds in 2013 and a further $8 billion last year, raising concerns among some analysts that a new debt crisis may be developing.

Buhari didn't replace GEJ to continue GEJ's corrupt system of government.

It's been 6 years and we still continue with excuses why Buhari is a failure. How will Nigeria pay back the $5 billion debt, we can barely pay back our current debt with the fall in oil price and foreign remittance.

Even Iwealla wasn't that stupid to borrow in dollars, the majority of the loans were in the local currency. Buhari has devalued the Naira to the point that it's now too expensive to borrow in Naira at N500 to $1 dollar and still falling.

Our leaders lack foresight and I'm not surprised at the way they're running the country. By taking a good look at the current climatic changes occurring around the world, most continents will suffer deeply because their major cities lie close to the ocean and no country will suffer more than China because their major cities are located very close to the ocean. These cities are also drainage basins which will be under water if the current trend doesn't stop. Africa and South America on the other hand aren't going to be affected to a greater extent because when Pangaea divided into what we know as South America and Africa, this created huge edges that may deter the effects of a rising Ocean level. That cannot be said about Asia because a number of their countries developed a around river basins which are also very low lands. Countries like Bangladesh will be under water because it's basically in a very lowland. Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Tianjin and a whole lot are going to be under water if the current trends continue.. I think the Chinese know this and they're using style to give loans to African countries so that they'll have territories to claim when sh*t start to get real. Our leaders don't know this, they aren't looking into the future and that's why we'll be at the receiving end of this nonsense. Africa is blessed with natural defenses and resources. The humans residing within are the major source of her problem.
God bless you with this exposure.

Yes but the fact remains Lagos kano will be more important when you compare population, economy of both states, transportation of goods by rail

There’s also palm oil in south west

Everything must not be about Lagos. Are we planning a one city country? The likes of Obudu and Tinapa failed because of lack of infrastructure and government buying into it.All rail system lead to north and non links west to ss/se, does mean that no commerce exist in this axis? Take the port system for example, the Apapa port is made to look like the only port we have in Nigeria, should it be so? Check out the number of trailers you will see heading to ss/se. The southern rail is important as the northern rail.

Youre not answering simple question. What would Lagos calabar benefit Lagos?

Lagos Kano will also be connected to apapa seaport.

Lagos state government is building a lot of infrastructures in lekki that will benefit Lagos state not those cities you mentioned up there

At least kano would bring more agricultural produce to Lagos state unlike those cities you mentioned above

Don't mind them, na great wall we go erect not rail.
This will be their purnishment for daring to burn our infrastructures in Lagos.

I already told you, the coastal rail will allow for easy export of products from Lagos (and Lekki Free trade Zone) to southern and eastern Nigeria. It would also facilitate the import of natural commodities such as palm oil from Benin, Coal from Enugu, LNG from the delta, etc.

Here is a GDP per capita map of Nigeria. Clearly a SW to SE rail would generate more economic impact.

SW can do without all these aforementioned suggestions.

You're just a loud dunce.

Go and learn the value of RAILWAYS in the development of a country, and how they drastically reduce the cost of doing business, leading to economic and industrial development.

The USA became the world's biggest economy on the strength of its massive investment in rail.

Big mouth critic with zero thinking ability.

Fool talking about ''half the money will be looted''. Which money? No money changes hands. The loan is about China funding the construction of the railway. It is a contract to build, not to hand anybody money.

Olodo people. Only big mouth to criticise, yet you know nothing.

The level of ignorance is so high, driven by primordial sentiments. The PHC-Maiduguri and Ibadan-Kano rail lines still cross many Southern cities. Lagos-Calabar rail is in the works and will eventually be done.

The other day, Amaechi was remonstrating with the Southern Reps and Senators not to be impediments to the actualisation of the Lagos-Calabar rail project but they shoved him aside, now they will turn back to accuse him of not prioritising it.

The AKK pipeline is the third in a series of major gas pipeline networks to be built in the country. That overall gas plan was put in place in 2008 and the implementation has progressed since then. The first two pipelines run from the Niger Delta to Lagos (completed and in use for years now) and the second is the one from the East somewhere in Imo State traversing all across to join the first pipeline in the West (almost completed). The third is the AKK pipeline now approved and to be constructed, within the overall plan of industrialising the country via gas, put in place in 2008. But of course the ignorant ones will not have that background and jump at the mention of AKK as another Northern agenda.

My plea is for this govt to ignore the noise and forge ahead with their infrastructure plans. It will be clear soon enough to everyone about where we are going.

Check some of my post on this forum, I said Buhari will go into Nigeria history as the best president ever.
Not because he is the most intelligent among his peers, but because he is the most committed, and has the discipline and courage to do what it takes, to develop this country.
A lot of projects that Buhari government is undertaking now, should have been completed even before year 2000.
My dad told me that during the Festac 77, a foreign journalist interviewed a government officials, about the bogus spending.
The answer from the official is that, " money is not Nigeria's problem, na how to spend it ".
The whole world knows what happened to Nigeria five years later.
It takes a disciplined and a committed leader to build a nation.
A lot of heavy loads that are supposed to be moved by rail are being moved by road, killing and wasting human lives.
My prayer is that God should sustain Buhari to complete his tenure, so that some of his projects, will not become another abandoned project.
Buhari is Nigeria's Attarturk, God bless him.
God bless Nigeria.

1. USA railways were built with slave labor and during times of massive poverty.
2. US railways were built in house and not with foreign loans
3. The railways have been improved and built upon for decades

This is like saying you are going to build an airplane in 1909 vs 2021 the amount of capital required to build now is nearly impossible and requires multiple countries and businesses to manufacture on airplane.
