Matt.10.34 - Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Matt.10.35 - For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

This Bible portion contradicts God's purpose for having sent his son. Whoever understands this Bible verse should pls explain.

Jesus promised the coming of the holy spirit adding that it will teach and refresh the memories of his true followers {John 14:26} it's this active force of God that will comfort Jesus' true followers {John 14:16} so that their minds will be at PEACE! John 14:27

I was waiting for those who are saying "the Holy Spirit is a person" to come and expatiate on what Jesus meant here, after all Mr Holy Spirit supposed to TEACH them all things! John 14:26

But because you asked {Matthew 7:7} i'm under obligation to do the needful.
The Answer!
Jesus is not from this source {John 8:23} so his way and perspective of making peace reign will totally contradicts our own. God's word referred to him as the Prince of Peace {Isaiah 9:6} so if we truly believe what the scriptures says about him then we must be prepared to listen and learn how to go about peace making from him.
First of all Jesus wants us to break free from politics and customs/traditions promoting racism in the human society, this is where we are having problems because such traditions has been with us for centuries and most of the people in the neighbourhood are so engulfed in it to the extent that whenever anyone tries to break free from such traditions everyone will turn against him/her as if the person has been infected with a deadly disease.
If you become a true Christian today racism, nepotism or tribalism will be erased from your thinking and before you know it you'll have brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, uncles, aunties and so on throughout the earth because they're of the same faith as you {Matthew 10:28-30} it's a pity the only group having such today are JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES!
So when anyone embrace true Christianity and is no more interested in old covenants, customs and traditions, all his/her relations will form alliance against him/her. So Jesus is here telling us that his true disciples should be fully prepared to experience such and don't forget that when they're vilifying a Christian they'll continue asking "are you now saying this your new found Faith is more important to you than our heritage/ family/ custom/ tradition?"
Of course a true Christian will not feel intimidated due to their threat {Matthew 10:28} so who has caused such division or break-up in the family circle if not the one who brought such new ideas (Jesus Christ)

It's difficult to really get a grasp of what you are saying, because you are speaking from the JW perspective, I still appreciate your response. You mentioned racism, nepotism, tribalism, etc., I am fully aware that JW discriminates other Christian Faith's, so don't you think this doctrine of JW is same as the nepotism, racism, and tribalism which you mentioned? In the process of trying to answer my question, you have added another question.

Jesus was the Prince of Peace.

But the Peace of which Jesus was Prince is not that of this world but of the Kingdom of God.

John 14:27 (KJV)

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

So it's not the Peace He gives, but the peace of this world that Jesus was speaking of in the instance of the Op.

Jesus is the Word of God, and the ability of the Word of God to transform the lives of men to become everything that God desires for them to be, makes Satan bring up tribulations and persecution in someone's life to ensure that the person gets discouraged so the Word of God doesn't bear fruit in someone life.

Matthew 13:21 (KJV)

Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

So Satan uses everyone possible to get to the person, especially his family members and loved, because they are usually the most influential persons in a man's life. That's that's how Jesus being the Word of God brings a sword to the peace of the world and division in the family of someone who begins to keep the Word of God.

Hence this saying of Jesus that anyone who doesn't hate his mother, father, children, wife, and own life etc., cannot be His disciple, because He knows very well that a person's loved ones are the greatest weapons of discouragement Satan can use against someone who keeps the Word of God, so this saying was meant to prevent that scenario.

God bless.

My God will bless you abundantly for this thought provoking question!

That's what Jesus taught us! He made us believe that we are truly related only to those with whom we share the same Faith {Matthew 12:46-50 compared to Galatians 6:10} he reminded us that the purpose of the laws God gave the Israelites was to teach them how to love everyone around them as their neighbours and the same applies to us today {Mark 12:31} that's why we leave the comfort of our homes to come visit you uninvited to TEACH you how you can break free from customs and traditions that's promoting nepotism, tribalism and racism in the human society.

But Jesus gave JWs a new law! He said we must love our fellow JWs not as ourselves the way mosaic laws says but as he (Jesus) loves us! {John 13:34-35} note that i may choose to deny myself of something so if i have to love someone as myself it means i can choose to deny such a person just as i denied myself, but Jesus never denied us of anything to the extent of giving up his life for us!
Well that's the same kind of love i must have for a fellow JW if i'm truly a JW!
It's this same kind of love that you can't see outside JW Organization, but if it's the one we are to have for neighbours generally surely we have that for everyone.
So you (none JW) are my neighbour, i must love you as i love myself {Matthew 22:39} but my fellow JW is my brother, sister, mother and father {Mark 10:30} so i must love each one of them exactly the same way Jesus loves me.
That's what you're seeing amongst JWs (the one and only true Christian group) today!

Once again thanks for this thought provoking question, my God will bless you! smiley

Okay...... thanks. Pls more inputs, if you understand that Bible chapter pls share your ideas. That Bible portion usually saddens my spirit, it is the only Bible portion that I don't understand in the whole Bible. Or could it be that we deserve the strife Jesus mentioned? May God have mercy and pardon us from it, Amen.
Re: I Have Not Come To Send Peace by MaxInDHouse(m): 3:16pm On Jan 12
For centuries the Israelites were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Messiah but what happened when he finally appeared as Jesus? They were totally disappointed as what Jesus preached and taught didn't go down well with them!
Well the same thing is happening today!
Whether you like it or not, JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES are the one and only true Christian group preaching and teaching what Jesus laid down, you have noticed how i correlated everything that's happening with what Jesus said about how to recognize his true followers when Satan finally succeeded in multiplying false religions in his (Jesus') name.
So the choice is yours! smiley

Hmm, there is no contradiction as you think. The thing is there is false peace and true peace; false unity and true unity; false love and true love; false jesus and True Jesus; false spirits, prophets, churches, religions, gospels etc.

*True peace is for true disciples of Jesus who live in daily obedience to His words by faith in him.

*False peace is of the devil and his followers: false prophets, false believers etc., who despise and do not obey His words.

By obedience I don't mean just keeping the ten commandments, but especially the commands of Jesus in the new testament (Matthew chapters 5, 6 and 7 would be a good start).

The Word of God will always cause "true" division among people or groups, even loved ones: family members, friends, church members etc., because of Sin -- John 7:7 :

Matt.10.21 - And the BROTHER shall deliver up the BROTHER TO DEATH, and the FATHER the child: and the CHILDREN shall rise up AGAINST their parents, and cause them TO BE PUT TO DEATH.

Matt.10.22 - And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall BE SAVED.

True peace is for those living in obedience: turning away from sins daily. He says to his disciples, 'In me you shall have peace, in the world you shall have tribulations (problems). Hence, not every religious unity, even if it involves great Pastors, Popes, Prophets, etc., are necessarily of God.

If anything religious doesn't agree or lead to obedience to Jesus commands and His Holy Spirit, then it must be false: of the devil, the father of liars.

Finally:

John.7.7 - The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the WORKS thereof are EVIL.

Matt.10.36 - And a man's foes (enemies) shall be they of HIS OWN household.

Matt.10.37 - He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me IS NOT worthy of me.

John.15.19 - If ye were of the world, the world would love HIS OWN...

God bless.

Jesus is admonishing and preparing the minds of believers for the persecution they'll face and that their stand for him would make others hate them in society and even in their immediate family...
This is even more evident in this day and time.

Where did your understanding of God's purpose for having sent Jesus Christ to the world come from? :-

Does it come from Scripture or from the mouths of other men(doctrines and traditions - all lies told in the name of God to deceive then and now) ? undecided

Back during Jesus Christ's time too, there were many who believed that God was sending them a messiah to deliver them from their then slave masters. Others believed God was sending a messiah to bring their enemies under their foot, fight battles against their "enemies", help them achieve their personal and financial goals etc.
God never said any of that was His intention for sending Jesus Christ to the world then, and His intention has not changed even to this day.
