Romans 6:1-3

[1]What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

[2]Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

[3]Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

Your Baptism must be in Jesus Christ Name else you are not HIS!

Baptism is the public declaration of someone's dedication that's symbolised by water immersion!
A Jewish prophet started this in the first century when he was declaring the coming of a greater prophet, his work was to get the faithful ones amongst the Jews ready for the next coming greater prophet. All those who are prepared to live their lives in harmony with the laws of their God must step forward and make a public declaration before everyone as he immerses them in a river named "Jordan".
When the greater prophet finally show up he also began doing the same thing but his own intention differs from that of the former prophet, he is teaching them new things the nation never heard before so whoever decides to live his life in harmony with this new teachings will have to symbolise it with water immersion to make a public declaration. So when people notice anyone doing this they expect him/her to comply with the teachings of this last and greatest Israelite prophet named "Jesus of Nazareth"! smiley

It's okay.
If by immersion;
But why do some denominations sprinkle water while some others pour water on their heads and also call it baptism ??

Christianity started on a good note when Jesus of Nazareth began teaching people throughout all Judea but it was confirmed in heaven and established fully when the same spirit Jesus had was poured on many of his followers {Act 2:16-18; Joel 2:28} this was a sign from heaven to show the Israelites that the man Jesus whom they nailed to a torture stake was truly the long awaited Messiah that Moses talked about {Deuteronomy 18:15-18; Act 3:22} but the Jewish religious leaders fought back, they felt Jesus has come to eradicate the form of worship they managed to build for centuries after their return from exile in Babylon. So Christianity began having issues again right from it's birth.
There were also Apostates (pretenders) amongst the Christians disguising as true believers but are there for selfish reasons {2Corinthians 11:12-15} these ones connived with the Roman government to exterminate all the pioneers of true Christianity and the Emperor Constantinople arranged for a committee to see how Roman gods could be christianized, that's what gave birth to the Roman Catholic Church and all such doctrines as infant baptism, use of rosaries and images in prayer, restricting worship to Latin, pagan festivities and so many other none Christian beliefs were forced on everyone.
The Emperor had a vision~ to extend his Empire to all Europe and far east with the influence of religion and that was how Rome became the world power to reign for more than 1,000 years.
If you travel to Rome today you will think it was a Christian nation from the time of Jesus but that's a big lie, Romans were pagans and pagans they remain till today!

So the infant baptism (where the baby need not learn why he/she is baptized) and sprinkling of water was from Roman Pagan worship of Jupiter the real bapstim involves an adult learning what Christianity is all about {Matthew 28:19-20} and accepting to live by the tenets before willingly submitting oneself for baptism and it must be complete water immersion {Act 8:36} if sprinkling of water could do why getting to a pool before baptism? smiley
