I wonder why gas plants are usually situated within residential areas in Nigeria.

Living in Nigeria is very underrated. Going out and coming back in Lagos too is also underrated.

Gas plants in residential areas, I don't understand who gives them permits.

In Calabar here a particular residential area has 6 fuel stations, 1 gas plant, up to 6 retail gas outlets.

If for any reason fire should break out in the gas plant it would be a chain reaction

Is it illiteracy that made those guy's stay to take pictures?

This happens for many reasons

1. Everyone now sells gas by the roadside; and some are dangerously situated in residential areas. I do not think most have DPR licenses

2. Everyone is a movie maker; when you see the video, you will see there was a fire flare but what most didn’t know was that was just the beginning. What comes next is a BLEVE. Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion... that is what kills most people

See a gas rupture... get as far away as possible

In UK and other cold nations, they pipe gas to every home. The gas supplies both the cooker and the fireplace for heating. It doesn't make sense to be refilling gas cylinder and carrying up and down to heat up your home.
They can't be less than 50 million homes in the whole UK, all with gas piping all over..

If one gets a new technological item, (Gas, cylinders, piping), one must do well to understand and maintain it. Otherwise, your life will just explode with fire or accident.

In a country like Nigeria where there's less regard or perhaps total disregard for safety, using pipe-borne has will eviscerate the country at some point when a government official decides to chop the money meant for maintenance. Let's just continue doing it the way we've been doing it with everyone responsible for their gas needs.

Lesson is don't build houses near gas stations... If your building is marked X don't bother sorting them coz you're putting your lives in danger, just look for a new site.

P.S for those who videoed the explosion, well they are alive though with injuries.
