Note to parents and educators

Good day, How are you all. I want to use this
medium to tell everyone what happened at my school today. I teach at a Private Secondary School in Lagos (Name Withheld).

So today being the First day of resumption, we also resumed school activities. We didn't really do much. Today was just revision of last terms work, giving scheme of work to students and introduction to second terms work.

At around 12noon, I was teaching Jss1 Class. And as I was teaching, a boy named Innocent threw his maths note to a girls table. I saw it and didn't like the fact the he was disrupting my class by throwing notes to his classmate
so I seized the note. When the class ended, I carried the note to return to the boy then a small paper fell from the book. Apparently he had written an Erotic Letter and hide it inside the Maths Note for the girl to read.

In the Note, He wrote...
Dear Ann
I like you very much.
I like watching Porn.
Come to the toilet and I will show you some girls that are sexing boys on phone.
E.g Britney White...Anika Albright.
Come alone during break time.
Don't tell anybody.
From Innocent.

After reading, I became so shocked that an 11yrs old boy could write such a thing with names of strange people. Apparently those names are names of Adult Film Entertainers (Porn Stars).
I called the boy, questioned him and gave him just 5 strokes of the Cane becos our Principal has told us to cane only on the hands or buttocks of any child.

After 30mins, the Mother called me on phone and started insulting, abusing me. Saying all sort of things that why did I cane her child? For what? I told her what he did and she was like..."And So...And So....Is Innocent the first person to do such a thing....And so" I was so shocked.

The next thing, My principal sent for me asking me why I caned the boy. I told him what he did and showed him the letter. He was shocked. As we were talking, the boys mother called and was shouting on the phone saying she will deal with me for beating her child. In her words...

"Why did that teacher beat my Son. What did he do?...And so?...Is that what my self and my husband are paying over N350K as School fees per term forIt's either, u sack that teacher or I withdraw all my children from that school."

My Principal explained to her what her son did yet she kept on ranting on the phone even after my principal sent her the Erotic Note via WhatsApp.

After an hour, a driver came to pick up the boy around 1pm. He didn't even stay till close of school today which was 3 pm.
My Principal then warned me seriously that from today hence forth, even if I catch students misbehaving or even having sex with themselves, I should pretend as if I didn't see them.
According to him, he said he needs the school fees they are bringing to the School.

I just got home now but I'm so pissed and angry. Right now, I'm done with teaching. I'm not going there tomorrow. It's getting too much.
Parents don't train their children well and when teachers do the job for them, they fight us and school owners support them all because of MONEY.

My co-teacher always says to me....
"Bro, calm down. School owners don't care about the wellbeing of the students. School is a business and they must make Profit. If you get in their way of getting money from parents too much, they sack u immediately. That's the truth. School is a Business. They are Entrepreneurs"...

I'm not surprised why there is high rate of Criminal behaviour among youths in the society today.
Charity begins at home.
Children are spoiling everyday under the noses of their parents yet their parents don't stop or discipline them. It is sad.
If you don't discipline them now, is it when they enter University you will start what you should have done years ago

That's why they are called private na...

No subsidy or subvention from government to keep them afloat.

But the bane in this proliferation of private schools is the drop in the quality of education, nonchalant behavior of both parents and students and the greed to make quick money.

The government should try everything within its power to make sure public schools return to their past glories, oops! unfortunately, we are still in the administration that detest education.

God help us!

First of all, forget your background or how you were raised, things are changing fast and technology is blending us with the reality of the western culture.

I can feel your plight but what you should have done is to take that student to the principal before independently flogging him.

You have no justifiable ground flogging that student according to the law because it was never part of the agreement made between the parents and the school.

The principal to curtain such things repeating itself in the future if he is not pleased with that kind of behaviour should draft an agreement covering such behaviour and the likely punishment the student will face. Copies of these agreements should be given to both the parents and the teacher to sign after coming to agreement with its content.

Parents have autonomous rights over the protection of their children and you should not in the guise of "helping" them to train their children expose their children to injury, fear or traumatized experience.

Face your duty as a teacher and teach those students those subject you were employed to teach and teach them well.

To their parents you are not in the position to teach them morals, no one knows what you've done or are doing as well that is not generally accepted as a right way of doing things.

I have personally met a Lady who is a prostitute at night and a teacher in a private school by day. So aunty, hypocrisy is everywhere in this country, and those students parent are aware of these.

Our culture of flogging students and engaging them in painful exercises as the punishment for their suppose wrong is inhumane, traumatizing and demoralizing of human dignity but we as black race will never just can't ramped our head in recognising and accepting these as a fact because colonization ate deep into our brains and we continue to treat ourselves the same way the colonial masters treated us.

Religion is not also helping matters, we are just so conscious of destroying ourselves and bringing ourselves under slavery and manipulation in the name of "mentoring" to making heaven.

Don't starve yourself unnecessary if you have not found another job!

Me: Ok what does she want? What did you discuss?

Me: Ok let her come.

(In my office)
Prospect Parent: Goodmorning ma.

Me: Good morning Mrs... Please have a seat.

Prospect Parent: Mrs Kodesho

Me: Ok. Mrs Kodesho. Welcome to Empire Academy. I was told you wanted to see me. Didn't my people treat you well (smiling nicely)?

Prospect Parent: Oh they did. Wow, so you have discount for uniform people? That's a good one oo. weldone.
I really like your school oo. The environment is so beatiful but I just want to know the curriculum you use.

Me: Ok ma. Well, before we get to curriculum, I will like to know what precisely you are looking for in searching for a school for your child.

Prospect Parent: Hmmmm, weeeelll, I want a place close to my house and I also want a school I can afford.

Me: Okkk, Proximity And affordability right?

Prospect parent: You may say so.

Me: but if I may ask. Where do you stay.

Prospect parent: Just behind the mosque

Me: Oh you are close to us nau, thats good to know. So Why haven't you walked in since over five years we've been here or did you just move in.

Prospect parent: Noo, I have living here for over 8 years now. Just that they say your fees is high oo

Me: Wow! Really? So why did you decide to come now,you think our fees is cheaper now?

Prospect Parent: Well since after corona, I know that schools will be looking for students and reducing school fees anyhow. I know I can get a good discount now

Me: Hhmmmm...Okkk, we appreciate you considering us for your child. Thank you. So you asked about our curriculum. We use a blended curriculum, but which curriculum do you prefare.

Prospect Parent: I really don't know any ooo. But I hear that Montessori is good.

Me: Montessori? I thought your child is in basic class?

Prospect Parent: Yes,She will be going to basic 4 now. She is 8years already. In her former school she used to come first in her class.

Me: Sorry to interupt you ma'am, but Which school is that?

Prospect Parent: (smiling mockingly ) Ah madam, leave that school oo. They dont teach anything at all. Only to be collecting big big money. Me I am tired of them sef. I am here now so let's leave old thing to be in the past.

Me: Meanwhile did you come with her past result

Prospect Parent: Yes ma

Me: Let me have it.
( she handed the result over to me and I was able to see the name of the school. Guess what? It is PRO of NAPPS in my chapter)

Me: Well madam, this is primary 2 result.

Prospect Parent: Yes she was in primary two before the lockdown and she was coming first in her class then. she is very intelligient, The lesson teacher that taught her during that lock down used primary 3 textbook. That's why I decided she should go to primary 4 now.

Me: Mrs Kodesho, this a wrong decision you are making. It is total bad idea. We went on lockdown in second term of her basic 2. She didnt finish second term, she completely missed third term. First term came again and you did not enrol her into school and now you are talking about basic 4?

Prospect Parent: Madam, Don't worry she will cope. I know my daughter. She is very smart, Just put her in basic 4. Besides I want her to write common entrance by next year.

Me: Ok, hold on first Let me find out if we still have space in that class.

(Over the phone with my PA)

Me: Please get me the Admin Officer

Me: (Admin Officer in my office) AO do we still have space in primary 4 we are prospecting another child for that class?

AO: Oh no ma. Basic 4 is full already, the twins and the other two parents that came last friday resumed today. Besides I just concluded registration for the parent you met at the reception this morning. So we are full for that class. We can't jampack the class, we are strictly adhering to all govt policies on covid 19.

Me: And Basic 3?

AO: Yes, we can take two more for basic 3

Me: Ok thank you AO, you can go.

Me: So sorry Mrs Kodesho. We are full for primary 4.

Prospect Parent: Okkkk... Well..., hmmmm.., you can put her in primary 3.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Right now I am with my head teacher and Admin Office trying to highlight this parent's red flags.

So if I may ask,

What red flags do you see from this prospect?

Will be waiting in the comment section.

Will be waiting in the comment section
I had a little experience teaching in a private school last year from after that end Sars period.
I was handling two classes, basic 3 and 4.
There was a girl in basic 4.
This girl was barely coping in class work.
Tests, exams came and she was at the bottom of the class.
She's just 6+ and I honestly couldn't blame her for not being able to catch up.
She skipped two classes in her previous school and her mum claimed she was 'topping' classes in her previous school.
I had to tell the headmistress to take her back to basic 3 before I left.
I don't know why today's parents are in a hurry.
You will see 7 years old in primary 6 that is barely coping in class.

God help our youth and children of this generation.
God will not come down to help them. We need to act fast before it get out of hand. Back then, porn videos were on VHS tapes and CDs. Some porn were on magazines however we now see them on the internet. Solution to this menace is a collective effort. These are some suggestions that would help change things.
1. The government should block or restrict pornographic sites. They should control the lyrics used by musicians if possible ban songs with vague words. One of such song I want to be banned is infinity by Olamide featuring Omah Lay. It may sound funny however that lyric is registering something on the brain of some students.
2. Parents have to discpline their kids. They may not necessarily use cane since this approach may worsen things.
3. The teacher should report bad behaviour to parent instead of flogging the child, there is a reason for this. Some teachers had send some kids to their early grave. Every kid is unique eventhough some differ in character. That you were flogged during your time doesn't mean such punishment might work in this era. Let the parent decide whether you can flog or not.
4. The public schools need to be revamped since most private are after quantity not quality. Schools are meant to impact knowledge and build characters unfortunately I can't say so for some private schools.

I called the boy, questioned him and gave him just 5 strokes of the Cane becos our Principal has told us to cane only on the hands or buttocks of any child.

You are lucky you did not commit that assault against a child in Lagos State, where all such forms of violence are BANNED by law. You would have been writing your moronic, error-riddled epistle from a jail cell, if that had been the case.

You have no phucking business beating up anyone's child with a stick REGARDLESS of their supposed offense. If you possessed a modicum of common sense, you would have tendered the incriminating note written by that student to the school principal, who could then have decided whether to punish the child in a NON-VIOLENT manner, such as having the offender pick litter, clean the kitchen floors, or wash dishes in the cafeteria. If the child was a repeat offender, then the principal, and NOT your idiotic asz, would have decided whether to suspend or dismiss the child.

If, in the process of attacking someone's child with a damn stick, you "accidentally" hit that person in the eye, and blinded him for life, we would be reading about your criminal trial in the newspapers. If, as occurred in an Ikorodu school recently, your beating had resulted in DEATH of the student, then you would have been arraigned for culpable homicide, and slam-dunked in a filthy jail cell along with 500 other felons, and with a rusty bucket for a toilet. Do you know, that hitting a sickle-cell sufferer just ONCE, can cause them to go into shock and DIE ? Perhaps you don't know that fact, because you never acquired a formal education, and was able to hoodwink your employers by presenting forged credentials at your job interview .

Sir, I have ZERO sympathy for you, since you have confessed here to have committed assault and battery against a minor. You actually do belong in jail, for that violent and senseless crime, or at the very least, you should be booted out of employment as a teacher, and thereafter blacklisted so that you NEVER gain employment in any school for the rest of your miserable existence on this planet. Have a nice day.

They are really after the money. 80% of private schools in Nigeria don't fail their students or pupils. Everybody in the class must pass because if you fail any child the parent's will withdraw them from the school.

If you will take elders advice, please cease from this your action.

The story will change entirely when you mistakenly injure one of them, no matter what you claimed they've done, by then no one will care to listen to you.

That your parents were brutal child beater toward you at home does not justify your now action.
With all their brutal beatings and the like you still ended up been a teacher in a private school!

That you attended a local school or government school where you were dehumanized does not justify your action towards those kids.

With all these characteristics you've display as a teacher, you really belong to the zoo.

You are not fit and proper for teaching job.

I truly understand your plight. The standard of education in Nigeria is deteriorating, and no one seems concerned. By the special grace of GOD , I am definitely quitting this job next month.

He's very fit. I will flog. Let the child tell his children I flogged him. Don't ruin society with too much idealism. The boy in question deserves more Cain and suspension.... That's how it is done, that's why my generation survived societal moral decadence. Period.

Don't starve yourself unnecessary if you have not found another job!

it's people like you that tend to spoil children n probably their child all in the name of the law.....do you know who is a teacher in the first place and what there duties are? after the parent, the teacher comes next.....when you went to school during your own day, wasn't anyone flogged or punish whenever they misbehave or they will report to the principal or govt (incase of government public schools ) before deciding on what to do to them?

even the bible say, spare the rods spoil the child.......though not every time a child should be flogged but Wen such instructions need to sink deep or for him to desist, he needs to be shown the whip.

So don't scold the teacher, he did the right thing. Even in abroad, such child would be expelled but here n as you can see its all about the money n the school fees paid.

wen your 11 years old daughter is caught in such act in school, don't discipline her with the whip for correction instead blame the teacher n principal!

You just made me laugh.

You claimed your generation was able to survived societal moral decadence through flogging and all these?

But that same generation came out P square who filled the air with lust song and "do me, do me" tone those years?

Came out Shina Petters "Omoge ore ke lewa"

Came out D bang the "koko" master?

Came out 2 face "African queen"

Came out Timaya "bumbum"

Came out Naira Marley "Idi ore mi"

Came out lai Muhammed the "lying machine"?

Came out all these politicians that are thieves and unkind with wicked attitudes?

Came out all these pastors and Imam?

Etc...

Sometimes is good to put our brain to use to avoid cobwebs.

This shows that your suppose generation were hypocrite and were forced to do what they never understood.

Even when they were not exposed to internet like today, they were still able to come out with those songs and attitude with boldness, how much more now that your suppose good moral generation's nude songs and videos are everywhere to corrupt the innocent kids mind?

Even thousand and millions of your supposed generation celebrates and worship those musicians!

I don't envy your generation at all, you all are bunch of liars, thieves and wicked hypocrite suppressed, tamed and enslave by the same wicked teachers and parents in the name of building morality.

You are just pained that you never enjoyed to express yourself the way this kids are, you've been deprived of your freedom to expression and liberty so it look strange to you.

I can understand, true freedom is strange to a black man.

Isolated cases indeed... History is replete with stories of permissive parents who didn't just destroy themselves but their immediate society because they spared the rod. I will flog any child bereft of sense. Period.

Let me help your thinking.

You said :

It is people like you that tend to spoil children n probably their child all in the name of the law.

Without law do you think you will be alive today to enjoy the little privileges you have today?

Without law, man has the instincts, tendency to do much more worse to his fellow man one millions times more than you are craving for subtly in form of flogging.

Thanks to that law that put the kind of you to check.

You also said:

...after the parent, the teacher comes next.

Now you see that the teacher comes after the parents and NOT before the parents.
So what do you think is the role of the parents?
To teach their children the moral pattern they choose to and you as a teacher to teach them the subjects you are employed to teach them.

Again you said :

even the bible say, spare the rods spoil the child.......though not every time a child should be flogged but Wen such instructions need to sink deep or for him to desist, he needs to be shown the whip.

Now I think this is the major problem with us here.

When you brought bible into the reason why a child should be flogged, what audacity and which narrow minded teacher does that?

Will you because of your own religion belief melt out punishment on another?
What if those children parents don't hold on to your own religion belief system?

The funny thing is that when other religion decides to also enforce their own way of life and attitude on you then you start crying for help and claiming islamization and the rest, forgetting that in your own subtle way you are worse off.

Another one by you:

So don't scold the teacher, he did the right thing. Even in abroad, such child would be expelled but here n as you can see its all about the money n the school fees paid.

I don't think you have the knowledge of the abroad you are talking about.

Abroad that legalise open gay and same sex marriage with unlimited freedom of sexual orientation?

If you read news to stay informed you would have read about a doctor that was suspended from practising medicine because he flogged his own child in abroad. In his apology letter after he was reinstated he claimed this your same cultural belief system led him to flogged that child.

Just continue with your stubborn head, you will learn by experience.
