It's to stop him from holding any public office in future.. That's the reason for the impeachment.. and to stripe him of certain entitlements meant for former heads of state
There is no law or precedent for that.
that is why chief justice John Roberts decided to boycott the impeachment trial.

Impeachment is only used to remove a government official from office. He is no longer a government official, so what's the basis of impeachment? It's common sense. It's like saying you want to sack someone that doesn't work for you.

A lot of you don't understand. House of Representatives impeached him for a second time before he left office. Senate needs to vote as well to uphold all rules of impeachment which includes Trump can not contest or hold a public post again, lose his presidential benefits, etc.

He knows the Senate impeachment is gaining support and with Democrats controlling both lower and upper houses, it could eventually happened. Hence, why he suspended his planned campaign for 2024.

He’s already been impeached while in office, what is on ground is his conviction and possibly being barred from future government offices which the Senate is constitutionally empowered to do. If not, the US Supreme Court will decide.

You can't impeach someone who is not occupying any public office.

Trump is no longer immune to prosecution. The best thing to do is charge him to court.

Lol
@bolded , they can't charge him to court because there is nothing to charge him with. If not, they would have done so like before now.

Democrats are just grasping at straws because they know Trump is coming back in 2024, and his supporters are still around and not going anywhere soon. Take out Trump and it will be an easy ride for the Democrats in 2024 because Republicans won't find someone with a strong following than him and the Democrats knows this.

It's one of the reasons majority of the Republicans that supported the impeachment initially are now tracking back one by one. Because he's helping the Democrats to take out Trump would be detrimental to themselves

even if by any means, the senate trial did hold, Trump won't be removed because his removal needs to be voted in by 2/3 senate members and not by a simple majority. The Democrats won't get 2/3 members vote, So either way, it's still a waste of time grin

the impeachment has already failed.
chief justice John Roberts is boycotting. they will also need a 2/3 of Senate votes to convict him, where will they get that from ?

It is not even clear whether bills passed by the previous Congress should be allowed in the new Congress. There are a lot of technicalities against this impeachment, that is why chief justice John Roberts who is supposed to preside over the impeachment is choosing to boycott.

I already did and everything I saw are different individual opinion with no legal precedent.

I will be better if you type 'has any US president been convicted by the Senate after leaving office? is there any part of the US Constitution that made provision for convicting an expresident who is no immune from prosecution?'

I will also want you to Google the meaning of impeachment.

An ex-president can actually be impeached, that will bar him from ever contesting for any public office and which also strip him of his entitlement as an ex-president.

He incited & caused the death of over 4 innocent souls, which he must pay for, being an ex president won't exonerate him.
