Africa didn't grow in leaps and bounds when it was traditional for centuries. Conversely, there were great empires even when a foreign religion (Islam) was predominant in West Africa. The EU, the US, the Gulf countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil are/were all religious countries at the time of their development. It didn't stop them from growth. Religion is not the problem.
