Well, this is not entirely correct as nothing in the police act mandates an IG to be selected from serving AIG's. A serving DIG can be made an IG if hw still has up to 4 years left before retirement. Also, an AIG can be selected as well provided he meets this criteria. Nothing also mandates serving DIGs and AIG sto retire before their retirement age. It is just a matter of self respect so as not to be ridiculed by a junior officer that has been made their boss. In fact, there is a particular DIG serving under Adamu presently who joined the force before him and became an AIG before him.

But this current DIG has 0 years left before retirement...he has spent 35 years in the force this year...so he has to retire either way

And over the past several years, it has been selected from the AIG usually.

The current IG was appointed from the ranks of the AIG for example.
