Dre publicly scrapped the idea on August 1, 2015, during an episode of his Beats 1 radio program, The Pharmacy with Dr. Dre, after 11 years of ineffective work on his notorious Detox album.

He said the album did not meet his expectations and, as a result, he wanted to cancel the idea. During the same show, Dre revealed that on August 7 on iTunes and Apple Music, he would release a brand-new album, entitled Compton, with a physical release following on August 21.

Earlier the same day, Ice Cube preemptively revealed the album in an interview with Power 99FM. The N.W.A biographical film Straight Outta Compton influenced the album and features a variety of collaborators from different points in his career, including, among others, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Xzibit, and The Game.
