As a matter of fact, you would need chemical handling permits before you can be legally allowed to go into the production of chemicals.

Maiden or First Inspection is where the company has never been inspected by SON officials. During maiden Inspection, the company is encouraged to embrace use/application of standard.

Follow up Inspection

Refer to any other Inspection carried out after the first Inspection. It is carried out to verify that a corrective action has been taken on previous Inspection findings and also to ensure that such actions are effective.

Re-certification Inspection

Re-certification Inspection applies when a company stops production of a certified product for whatever reasons other than quality or safety for more than six months and resumes production. It also applies if certification of the product is withdrawn by SON due to failure to meet certification requirements and the manufacturer re- applies.

The standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) operates Product Certification Scheme to promote global competitiveness among domestic manufacturers through compliance with the requirements of the relevant Nigerian Industrial Standards and equivalent International standard. The certification scheme are third part assessment of products and processes to confirm conformance to requirements of the relevant specifications or standards.

There are four main product certification schemes operated by the Product Certification Directorate of SON. These are:

Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) which is valid for 3 years. Voluntary Certification Scheme which is valid for a year. Nigerian Quality Award Scheme (NQA). Product type Certification for Export - per batch of consignment.

It is the Manufacturer's responsibility to ensure that the complete production process of products intended for certification continuously complies with the requirements as stated.

The manufacturer shall exercise adequate control (e.g by inspection or otherwise) over all subcontractors and out - workers preparing assemblies or parts which have a safety implication.

Production is the action of making or manufacturing from components or raw material. In Nigeria, some of our raw materials for industrial uses are imported while rest are sourced locally. It's imperative to consider as a factor the source and availability of your raw material before production.

At all stages in the production and control processes, non conforming materials, part and products shall be clearly identified and/or segregated to prevent unauthorized use. The process by which non conforming products are to be handled should be described in a clear outlined procedure.

The Management team of the Manufacturer shall be available for opening and closing meetings with the SON team.
The manufacturer shall maintain appropriate records to demonstrate conformance with the certification requirements. These records shall be made available to the inspectors . Records shall be legible and identifiable to the product and test equipment involved and shall be kept for a time which shall not be less than the period between two inspection visits.
