The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa today disclosed that the Commission arrested more than 400 young Nigerians for internet-related fraud in the first three months of the year.

He made the disclosure in his office while receiving a delegation from the University of Abuja led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdulrasheed Na ‘Allah.

According to the EFCC Chair, “From January 2021 to date, we have arrested more than 400 Nigerians suspected to be involved in various cybercrime or advanced fee fraud-related offences and that is to tell you how huge the problem is.” He added that “less than 48 hours ago we arrested 18 individuals in Abuja”. Among those arrested, he said, are students of tertiary institutions.

While bemoaning the impact of cybercrime on the image of the country, Bawa advocated the reorientation of the younger generation, adding that the university has a crucial role to play in actualizing this. He expressed optimism that there would be more collaboration between the EFCC and the University of Abuja in the areas of sensitization and deterrence to mitigate youth involvement in financial crimes.

The EFCC boss however commended the long-standing relationship between the EFCC and the University of Abuja, particularly the affiliation of the EFCC Academy to run specialized postgraduate programmes in Forensics.

“It is our desire that our officers are up to date as you are aware that crime is changing and evolving and the world has turned digital; everything is on the internet and there is the need to know new trends coming up and we hope that the collaboration through the establishment of different programmes will yield results in combating corruption”, he said.

He further assured that the EFCC will do everything possible, including upgrading the facilities at the EFCC Academy, to ensure the success of the programmes. In his words, “we are looking forward to having e- classes where training can be held online without necessarily being physically present considering the present circumstance of the world”.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah commended the Executive Chairman for his dedication to overcoming the scourge of corruption. “This moment is very significant because it is not for any reason that you have been selected; you fit the challenge this nation is facing”.

All aspects of our nation including economic, security, social-political, see the job of the EFCC as an area everyone ought to support and that is why we stand by the Commission,” he said.

While expressing his delight at the collaboration between EFCC and the University in the area of Forensic Science, Prof. Na ‘Allah noted that the partnership is one whose time has come. “This is a collaboration that should have been done a long time ago; we cannot move forward except our manpower is trained to be the best and we hope to have exceptionally talented staff”.

On the Vice Chancellor’s entourage were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Innocent Clement; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Abubakar Sadiq Abba; Dean Student Affairs, Dr Abubakar Umar; Rector, Centre for Security and Legal Studies, Professor Arinze Agbo; Director, Developmental Services, Professor Augustine Bassey and Professor Mohammed Gambari.

Not condoning crime, but this obviously is an epidemic... what is the Govt doing about it?... The same cycle of catch- bail/imprisonment - release is obviously not working.

Opinion:.... There are two options... it could be either forced enrollment into the army for 2years period or enclosed farmers in Govt fields/approved farmlands in various regions for 2 years period.

If one spends two years farming or being in the frontlines of battlefields, yahoo would be the least thing on the mind when released. Some might even kick start a career/business from that.

So sad. To curb this menace of internet fraud, I think the death penalty or life imprisonment should be introduced against the culprits. However, thorough investigation must be carried out before such judgement takes place. The same should be introduced for politicians. Detailed analysis of money spent must be reported and if any fraudulent activity is discovered, the should face the same.
Imagine replacing a governor who has just be sentenced to death for fraud. The incoming replacement would be on his toes continually

There should be no excuse for fraud. Na so one guy scam me that day and na sport bet he use the money for. Typical of a lazy Nigerian youth!

Just because politicians steal does that mean other thieves should be left alone?

If you have evidence against any politician why not send them to EFCC?

Parents are getting weaker and weaker!

For your mind now, you just gave an opinion to end cyber crime?

You didn't even talk about the harsh government policies and all.

Least of Nigeria problem. Go to US or UK and tell them cyber crime is the least of their problem. The sentence in Nigeria is even fair. In UK they normally sentence fraudsters to 30years and more imprisonment

There are no Jobs in the country...
There are no jobs in the country...
There are no jobs in the country...

People have mouths to feed.

Southern youths chose Yahoo

Assuming Northern youths were as smart as Southern youths they too would have gone for yahoo.. But they aren't thats way they picked up arms and embraced kidnapping and banditry..

I'm against Yahoo but I'm also a realist. You can't steal the future of the youths, make starting and running business hard AF and expect the youths to just lie down and take it. If anything the government should see this as a cry for Help.

I wonder why EFCC has been solely reduced to catching of Internet fraudsters. Don't get me wrong, these fraudsters are a menace. But what 50 fraudsters would steal is what only one big wig politician would en masse in a very short time.

While the fraudsters are usually but not limited to stealing from foreigners, the Politicians are severely draining our collective monies and monies meant for the development of Nigeria.

Let there also be another punitive measures for these fraudsters other than just jail, bail and release cos it seems to have little or no effect on slowing down the fraud practice.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, that doesn’t see the economic and financial crimes of the politicians in all seats of power. I just pity all those people educated illiterate degree holders cheering these clowns on when they are not fighting the root of the problem.

children of south are the problem of this country, that's why allowing them to rule this nation will be a disaster, they inherited their criminal act from their elders. The like of orji and tinubu comes to my mind each time I read news like this... Allah forbids this people rule over me and my people

The truth is that "Crime Pays" yes you read that right, Drug Cartels will also attest to this fact.
For every hushpuppy that is caught , there are thousands more.
Even in advanced countries like Russia, China etc there are underground rings dedicated to financial cyber crime.

The Government should provide jobs and empowerment for the youths if they really want a decline in the rates of financial crime. But alas! The same Government officials are at the forefront of embezzling public funds that are meant to improve the life of the citizens.
