plaindealer: This is the real value of the railway - movement of heavy freight cheaply and efficiently across the country. It’s less about moving passengers from Lagos to Kano, though that is an added bonus. If trucks were to move what is on this train, about 20 trucks would be required, with attendant nuisance and destruction of the roads. |

babaolofin: PTI has since been upgraded to a University. Olokola LNG was not killed by Yaradua but by the private investors who didn't think it was a good investment. Nonetheless OBJ facilitated many projects in the SW including Papalanto and Omotoso power plants amongst others |

Odogwu46: I get where you are coming from. We have all been mentally abused by the antics of our politicians and government. But even at that, your comments are a bit shallow. Besides, Wakki to Itakpe is not a high passenger traffic route, so passenger traffic on the train could never have been the idea. As any one in Nigeria knows, the train was designed to serve Ajaokuta steel complex. If the line is extended from Akaokuta to Abuja, it can connect from there to Kano and can serve as a means of heavy duty equipment to that axis from the port and movement of food from that axis to Warri port for export. What matters is that the rail is made to run economically and on a commercial basis to benefit the wider economy. Meanwhile companies across the country are already talking to NRC to see train can be used to move stuff and businesses will spring up around the corridor, but instead of seeing opportunity you focus on the northern southern politics. |

Latvin: Everybody knows PTI has been upgraded. We fought for it before it was converted to University of Petroleum . Olokola LNG project was killed by Yaradua and not private investors . The Federal government abandoned the Project. If Obj had initiated the Project and see it to mid stage, no private investor would have opted out. OKLNG project company comprises the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC), BG Group PLC, Chevron Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell PLC. Shell, Chevron and BG were pulled into the project because of Obj because they are sure of full commitment from Federal government. Brass and Escravos are on ground when OBJ initiated this project. The BG group withdrew their investment in 2012. Chevron withdrew few years later. The investors had drawn the attention of Yaradua to the Project without any response late 2007 and early 2008. They only remained in the Project looking for other opportunities. The project died with the end of Obj government. Companies prospecting for oil for over 30 years in the North are doing it as political projects and not for investment purposes, every time indirectly, Nigeria pays for all the cost involved. Olokola has free trade zone and the possibility of deep sea ports and the Gas Project would have impacted on other businesses in South West and industries in West Africa Sub region around Lagos. You are bringing IPP which are scattered projects in different geo political zones. Is that a political project? National Integrated Power Project is a national project. Where is the power ? This project is being guaranteed by loan from China. Nigeria would provide a sovereign guarantee for 85% of the pipeline’s cost. The AKK link will cost a total of $2.59 billion, at the end, it might enter almost $7 billion with the guarantee to be funded by China’s Sinosure with a 12-year repayment period and three-year moratorium. NNPC will cover the outstanding 15% of the price tag. Chinese financing is available for the project, linked to China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co. (CPPEC) working on the construction. The Chinese carried out the railway line reactivation for the Project. The loan, the project on completion cannot pay it in 12 years. |

While this developmental stride is commendable by president Buhari, we should not make it look like heaven on earth for Nigerians. That is where Nigerians often get it wrong with their leaders, they praise and eulogize their leaders when something is done good, they forget there are many other things that ought to have been done better. The praises and eulogies get into their leader's heads and they start mishaving. I remember when Buhari took office in 2015, there was a marked improvement in power supply, and Nigerians started singing praises that the Messiah has come. Now today, they cry over the same power supply. Nigerians should understand that their leaders are the people that ride on popularity and sensationalism, the more praises you are giving them over mediocre projects like roads and rails, the more opportunities you are denying yourselves over better developments like job creation, manufacturing and FDI's. 1 Like |

babaolofin: The South West is the most industrialised region in Nigeria today. You can argue that most of that is privately driven but nonetheless. The market is well developed with the busiest seaport in West Africa, international airport, busiest roads, schools, industries and what have you. Most of the country's gas, fuel, power etc are consumed in the SW. My point is that SW cannot complain much about infrastructure marginalisation much as the SE or North can. When OBJ was pushing OKLNG, Brass LNG which made more economic sense was being killed. In all, both Brass LNG and OKLNG were killed with NLNG Bonny being expanded - cheaper and made the most economic sense to these private investors and also to Nigeria as a whole. |

Latvin: I have been asked to stop engaging you. You don't know anything about oil and gas. You said Brass was being killed when OBJ was pushing for gas project in South West around Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast up to Gambia and Senegal. Bonny expansion has nothing to do with Brass or OKLNG. OBASANJO's only project for South West was killed . If late Chief Wahab Folawiyo had not taken the risk of prospecting for oil in Benin Basin, you don't know it makes more economic sense to prospect for oil offshore Lagos than wasting billions of dollars for about 30 years prospecting for oil in other basins outside Niger delta basin. Chinese is presently at Chad Basin and moving to other Basin . The same Chinese people are behind this project. The railway line is just because of that project. Generations yet unborn will meet that loan. The EWGP is mainly private initiatives. It can pay and support itself. The WAGP is also mainly private initiatives led by Chevron and others at the beginning. |

babaolofin: WAGP is operated by Chevron but Govt through NNPC has 60% in that Joint Venture, not so? Even the WAGP project is struggling to break even as gas customers in Benin, Togo and especially Ghana are not paying for gas supplied. At a point, Chevron contemplated selling their stake. All I said about Brass LNG, OKLNG and Bonny LNG are verifiable. Brass LNG in Bayelsa was sidelined when OBJ kept pushing OKLNG. Many people challenged the sense in pushing OKLNG then when gas from the project was mainly for export. Coming back to the so called lucrative EWGP and WAGP, their profitability is often overstated. Most of the gas is used for power generation and we know the power value chain is broken because customers don't pay. Gas suppliers hardly get their monies and FG has to bail out the system time and time again. This is the reason why FG is pushing for cost reflective power tariffs so that the whole chain can work. My point is, it is easy to sit and say a certain region was denied infrastructure but a deeper look will reveal the facts behind the case. |
