Stop mass arrest of Igbo youths ― Ohanaeze warns Nigerian army

By Anayo Okoli
OHANAEZE Ndigbo has raised alarm over the alleged massive arrest of Igbo youths by the Nigerian army and taken to unknown destinations.

Ohanaeze said the mass arrest is going on in Ohaji and Oguta Communities of Imo State by military personnel believed to be from 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri.

The arrested youths were alleged to be members of Eastern Security Network, ESN, according to the apex Igbo group.

Ohanaeze wondered why the army were arresting Igbo youths who bear no arms and allow Fulani herdsmen to move around with AK 47 riffles.

They called on the Chief of army staff to immediately stop the mass arrests.

The Professor George Obiozor led Ohanaeze in a statement signed by its spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia said: “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to ongoing massive arrests of Igbo youths by the Nigerian Army.

The report indicates that “the military personnel, suspected to be led by the 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri since Sunday have been arresting male residents and youths, particularly in Oguta and Ohaji communities and clamping them into vans and taken to unknown destinations”.

The report adds that the army are “busy, carrying out raids, discreet searches and arrests of youths and residents who are suspected to be linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its security arm, the Eastern Security Network”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Ambassador Prof. George Obiozor is unequivocal about the use of firearms by unauthorized persons, bodies or groups. Democracy, all over the world vests the absolute authority for the legitimate use of force in government. We had admonished that the exclusive indulgence of AK 47 to the Fulani herdsmen as canvassed by Governor Bala Mohammed is antithetical to the ethos of a decent society.

For the armed forces to arrest the Igbo youths without evidence of arms, means of violence or crime is cowardly, uncivilized and mostly unacceptable to Ohanaeze Ndigbo. It runs contrary to every sense of natural justice and rights of citizenship for the army to invade some Igbo communities in search of youths; most of whom are brilliant university graduates whose society has denied employment and sense of belonging. This is adding salt to festering injury.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo does not just wax lyrical about Igbo youths of all categories or dispositions.

We condemn crime irrespective of the source. On the other hand, we stand on a firm wicket that it is ruthless to arrest any Igbo in the guise of membership of a terrorist organization unless there is sufficient evidence of crime or unlawful possession of firearms.

“We call on the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru to urgently stop the wave of arrests before it gives impetus to the proposal by the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to offer asylum to person who actively and openly supports IPOB and likely to be at risk of arrest or detention, and ill-treatment which is likely to amount to persecution”.

Ohaneze should come out of hiding and lead massive protest in South East against Nigeria Army Brutality in South East. Something happened yesterday that made me surprised of what is going on in South East, i was on call with my brother wife returning from School to my greatest surprise she hang out the call only to call her after 2hours and she told me that she hang out because people was after her to cut off the call because the bus is approaching Army checkpoint, i asked her what is your business with Army checkpoint are you driver and she said that if Army found any one making a call in the car that you may be punish even the whole people in the car. I laughed and ask her if Nigeria is in any form of martial law ?

How many youths have being arrested in Katsina, Zamfara, Niger and other northern state where bandits and Boko haram is ravaging . I think you have lost sense of reasoning because of ethnic bias.

On a serious note the Nigerian army is a big shame if you are so dumbheaded and can't get intelligence to go after the people you are looking for who are in the forest, why should dat be the problem of innocent people who just wants to survive the effects of this evil govt

A great mistake made by the South, East and West is allowing the North occupies 80% of the Nigeria Army right from the Amalgamation of Nigeria. What do you expect from people who detest Easterners. I believe it’s fair enough if Nigeria should breakup now to prevent an inevitable Civil/Religious/Ethnic war coming!

Did the bolded come from the useless Ohanaeze? No wonder the group acts like a bunch of senseless cows. One of the best and practical democracies in the world vested the absolute authority for the legitimate use of force not in government but the people. This clueless Ohanaeze should concentrate on what it knows best, pepper-soup.

It wasn't from amalgamation, it was from 1970.
Those who fought with the fulani, including the northern minorities dropped the ball big time.. They were busy looting oil money to notice the steady and methodical take over of the coercive instruments of the State by the core northerners..
It's the Northernisation of the military that has given the north so much power in politics in recent years.?

Please take the east out of the silly equation. When East was busy fighting the vandals which included the South, West and North during the Nigeria/Biafra war, the West and South welcomed the North with open hands. When Nigeria/Biafra war ended, the South and West foolishly joined the North at the hip to deny the East everything in Nigeria. While the moronic West and South concentrated on how to relegate Ndigbo to the back bench, the North quietly usurped all the positions in the armed forces and other paramilitary units in the country. What a shame the West and South joined hands to present to the North the gift of Federal Republic of Nigeria (Arewa).

Ohaneze should also tell the UGM to stop the unnecessary attack

The army did not wake up and be arresting people for no reason..

Igbo's have no political leaders to speak on their behalf cos they are all efulefu.. At the same time, Ipob and reasonable Igbo people should also get involved in politics, you can't continue to allow people who do not have your interest to continue representing you

Where is Abaribe in all this? How about Obi? Ikweremadu?

I won’t pick offense. Honestly the whole thing is hurting with the way this government is treating the rest Region. From South the bread winners of this nation to the East the Commerce Brainers to the West the Digital Brainers. North is just dragging the whole country backwards.

There are no more police checkpoints in the east..
The free movement and less extortion of motorists in the east right now by men of the police force, is kudos to the unknown gunmen...

Contrary to the bolded, I believe the incessant raids and forcefull abductions of the youths of the south east will be put to a halt..
Fulanis do not understand the voice of reason and or deplomacy..you should know that by now!!
