STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENCY ON RECENT CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS AND DIGITAL ECONOMY Today, there is an unfortunate fashion in public discourse that makes leaders in politics, religion, and civil society liable in the present for every statement they have ever made in the past – no matter how long ago, and even after they have later rejected them. This insidious phenomenon seeks to cancel the careers of others on the basis of a thing they have said, regardless of when they said it. The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami is, currently, subject to a “cancel campaign” instigated by those who seek his removal. They do not really care what he may or may not have said some 20 years ago: that is merely the instrument they are using to attempt to “cancel” him. But they will profit should he be stopped from making decisions that improve the lives of everyday Nigerians. The Minister has, rightly, apologized for what he said in the early 2000s. The views were absolutely unacceptable then, and would be equally unacceptable today, were he to repeat them. But he will not repeat them – for he has publicly and permanently condemned his earlier utterances as wrong. In the 2000s, the Minister was a man in his twenties; next year he will be 50. Time has passed, and people and their opinions – often rightly – change. But all discerning Nigerians know this manufactured dispute is nothing to do with the Minister’s prior words, but solely concern his actions in the present. This Administration is committed to improving the lives of all Nigerians – and that includes ensuring they are not over-charged or under-protected for those services on which modern life depends. The Minister has been leading the charge against illegal data deductions and pricing; he has revolutionized the government’s virtual public engagement to respond to COVID-19 and save taxpayers’ money; he has established ICT start-up centres to boost youth entrepreneurship and create jobs; he has changed policy to ensure locally produced ICT content is used by ministries, starting with his own; and he has deregistered some 9.2 million SIMs - ending the ability for criminals and terrorists to flagrantly use mobile networks undetected. In two short years, Minister Pantami has driven the contribution of the ICT sector to the GDP to more than 18 percent, making it one of the top two playing a critical role in the emergence of the economy from the COVID 19-induced recession. In putting people first, the Minister and this administration have made enemies. There are those in the opposition who see success and want it halted by any means. And there is now well-reported information that alleges newspaper editors rebuffed an attempt to financially induce them to run a smear campaign against the minister by some ICT companies, many of which do indeed stand to lose financially through lower prices and greater consumer protections. The government is now investigating the veracity behind these claims of attempted inducement, and – should they be found to hold credence – police and judicial action must be expected. The Administration stands behind Minister Pantami and all Nigerian citizens to ensure they receive fair treatment, fair prices, and fair protection in ICT services. Garba Shehu |

jamiudinho:Hypocrite? Are you sure you know the meaning of the word you just used? Several people have already explained to you on this thread why the govt had to use the plane of a private individual for that trip/ transaction, but obviously in your bigoted ways, just to fuel and justify your religious intolerance, you chose to believe the FG was arming the military to kill Muslims; that's all you and your folks could interpret from the fight against bokoharam because a Christian president. Bokoharam members were obviously 'Muslim brothers' to you then cos they engaged mainly in bombing churches. I hope you and your brothers up north are happy with what bokoharam has become, murdering your people in thousands and rendering your region a wasteland. You've even added banditry to it to completely waste yourselves and you support these vampires at every opportunity cos some divisive cleric taught you to believe Christians are your problem. 3 Likes |

And the Buhari government takes the bait again! If not for want of clue, I'd have expected a smarter move by this administration than this, but of course the burden of pleasing their allies and cohorts is heavier on them than that of integrity, fairness and patriotism! With this blatant bail the FG has granted Pantami, Buhari has only openly endorsed anarchy and the attendant unpopular toga of nepotistim/tribalism his government is berated for!... Not to even talk about the religious angle. If it were a smart and forward thinking government, Buhari should have known that it is better to sacrifice Pantami, especially in the face of daunting evidences (many of which Pantami himself admitted to be true), and have a façade of 'a responsible government', alas! The urge to please the larger sinister Fulani, and by extension the Islamic world that Buhari revers, has pushed this administration into the snare of shame! By overtly supporting and attempting to protect Pantami, Buhari and his government has just simply proven Trump (Ex-Potus) right on the latter's allegation of a State sponsored genocide against Christians! Now, the average Christian has a reason to fear for their lives and freedom under this administration! What's more? We see an unpretending countenance of disdain for anything Christian and non Hausa/fulanis by this government! We have not forgotten how Apostle Suleiman was almost picked up in Ekiti years ago in Gestapo style under this administration. Recently, Garba shehu was quick to condemn Rev. Fr Kukah for a statement he (shehu) termed "ungodly". Howbeit, none of these two had expressly stated anything close to " being happy when unbelievers are killed"! Yet, the FG wants the world to believe that even if a genocide was ongoing, provided one of the promoters and sponsors of the genocide (Pantami in this case) have helped reduced data tariff and promoted some national ID registration, there's nothing to worry about! And for those who would say Hey! You didn't read and comprehend what Garba said, my response is; why didn't a press release of this kind surface during the Kemi Adeosun saga? My conclusion is, the precedent this administration is setting is going to have very grave consequences in the long run. Succeeding administrations may decide to act boldfaced, relying on this precedence to enthrone impunity. When that happens, let Buhari (if he's still alive by then) and his co-travellers be mute and heads buried in shame! 2 Likes |
