As soon a prisoner gets to the prison; everything is taken from him; so he couldnt use paper.

When accused people hear guilty; their brain goes into overdrive-the fear of living in prison, any sign of hope is grasped quickly; that number is hope for him.

He probably planned to call the lawyer that day to start preparing a statement for the day of sentencing to possibly get the Judges mercy or to start preparing for an appeal.
