Under the regional system we were operating the Independence Constitution which was strictly federal in nature as it featured 75% resource control by which each region retained 75% of revenues generated in her domain and remitted only 25% to the FG hence there was nothing like federal allocation unlike today that
the federal government takes all and shares stipends to states in the name of federal allocation. Also, each region had her own embassies in foreign countries. In addition oil wells and mines were under the regional government and not under the FG. There was Local Government police under that system hence insecurity was relatively unknown. All these were supposed to trickle down to the future states to be created in due course. But in pursuit of Igbo domination agenda, Aguiyi Ironsi took over power illegally, introduced military rule to Nigeria, abolished the regions and suspended the Independence Constitution on the excuse that such a federal constitution was promoting tribalism over nationalism. Then he replaced it with a unitary constitution which according to him would foster national unity and bring about a stronger and united Nigeria. But posterity soon proved him wrong. That was what led to a chain of events that culminated in a bloody civil war after which Nigeria became the failure it currently is.
