As far back as 1966, MM had craved political party. It took the persuasion of Sir Francis Cumming-Bruce (British High Commissioner in Lagos) and Elbert Matthews (Amercan Ambassador) to ease him out of that insistence and for Gowon to assume power.
After that, Muhammed never let up! Those who interrogate history will ask use toons beyond the cold facts served up for public consumption. In fact once Awolowo left the Federal Executive Council, it was a signal for both men to assert their latent muscle and the fought until both entered the FEC as Federal Commissioners!

When offered the military governorship of Western State, OBASANJO turned it down and Oluwole Rotimi was appointed instead! The p,abs of both Obasanjo and MM go back much longer but it was concluded in Calabar because MM went to South Eastern State for a three day inspection visit and Obasanjo followed suit so that both had a one day overlap in Calabar. These visits took place a few days to 29 July 1975.
The coup itself as we later saw was not for nationalistic reason but for sectional interests. The pattern of removals and appointments of far less competent substitutes confirmed this. When Lai M blamed that coup for Nigeria current crises everybody laughed because Lai Mohammed is regarded as a liar! But those who make it a habit to interrogate what the read will be in no doubt that the reckless destruction of the federal civil service in 1975 has left Nigeria bereft!

OBASANJO knew the mission but so far as he could get a seat, even a side seat, to use s a launch pad to break Awolowo's monolithic stranglehold on Yoruba then he would be content! Hence he pressed for the creation of Ogun State and in the end the 19 states they created proved awkward when transposed into their so called 1979 constitution! They created the additional seven states without reason when the original 12 states had not bedded down! In addition in order to manage such a large number of states Obasanjo abolished fiscal federalism taking all revenue to the center! In that period, the seeds of Nigeria's perpetual illness were sown and profusely watered!

Chief Phillip Asiodu, an Oxford trained economist and senior permanent secretary said that by shelving the 1975-80 national development plan, MM, did the greatest disservice to Nigeria!
Asiodu put it mildly! That was the period when many countries including Singapore achieved the structural reforms that made them ready for globalisation! Only the deliberately blind would fail to see how we cannot respond to global economic shocks because we lack not just the infrastructural base but the national intellectual capacity for policy analysis has been obliterated! The space meant for Nigeria has been occupied by Brazil, India, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt and Turkey.
