Ghana Owes $160m For Gas Supply From Nigeria by Vixlot: 10:39am On May 06, 2021
Ghana owes a total of $160m for gas supplied to its largest power producer, Volta River Authority, from Nigeria through the West Africa Gas Pipeline, our correspondent has learnt.

N-Gas Limited, a company owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Chevron and Shell, buys gas from oil companies in Nigeria and transport it to Ghana through the $1bn WAGP.

The pipeline, which is operated by the West Africa Pipeline Company Limited, was built to supply natural gas from Nigeria to customers in Benin, Togo and Ghana.

N-Gas has an off-take agreement with Ghana to supply 120 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to the VRA. But supply to the country had fallen short of the contractual volume in recent years.

“There is a current arrangement between the gas suppliers and the off-taker that the volume will be 60mmBtu,” the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited, Harriet Wereko-Brobby, told our correspondent in response to questions sent via a text message.

She said the off-taker (VRA) had established a payment security arrangement for gas consumed to halt “debt accumulation going forward.”
“There is still an outstanding debt of around $160m to be paid to the supplier, N-Gas, and it is expected that about $30m will be paid shortly,” Wereko-Brobby added.

GhanaWeb recently reported that the volume of gas supplied to Ghana from Nigeria for power production had reduced by about 50 per cent.

It said the situation had been attributed to the inability of Ghana to settle its long-standing debts as stipulated in the gas supply contract, and vandalism of gas pipelines in Nigeria.

The Board Chairman, VRA, Kweku Awotwi, was quoted to have said, “We are at about half of what we have been contractually promised, which is not good enough. There are many reasons for that: the vandalism of pipelines and the fact that we have not paid our bills. We owe them about GH180m; what do you expect them to do?

“Now, we are getting the gas because the VRA is pre-paying for that gas. We are putting in Letters of Credit to get the gas.”

In 2016, Nigeria saw a resurgence of militant attacks in the Niger Delta that caused the nation’s oil production to plummet to a near 30-year low and disrupted gas supply to power plants.

Commenting on the debt owed by Ghana for the supply of gas through the pipeline in May last year on the sidelines of an event in Badagry, the Managing Director, WAPCo, Mr. Walter Perez, told our correspondent, “We are delivering gas now because we have put arrangement in place for Ghana to prepay for the deliveries that they receive, and so that is working. We have every expectation that this will continue to work.”

Everyone trying to paint Nigeria black, instead of the man to go straight to the fact that they are owing he first follow the part of vandalism in Nigeria before he mention the actual cause of the short supply.
Is it not a common knowledge that when you violate set terms of payment and accumulate debt beyond expectation, your supplier will have no choice than to negatively adjust quantity of supply?

Good morning sir. First and foremost, this is not recent so I don't see the point beyond the vanity bragging and academic use of the debate.

My issue is how quick you are too quick at calling out some leaders as corrupt. While I don't say we are an Eldorado yet under our President, one thing about my President, HE Muhammadu Buhari is that he is a puritan and incorruptible leader and he is above board in that area and his personal character of integrity is attested to even by his worst critics still with conscience.
Fault him as much as you can, he will not join you in race for filthy lucre to acquire oil license, bank license, new wives/ girlfriends, guest houses , build private universities, private libraries fundraisers, private jets.

Now to your screenshot, sir, that is dated 2017 but the Punch newspaper report of Ghana's indebtedness is 2018.
Do you not think that screenshot you shared may have been fake news as usual. This punch report as at 2018 is saying Ghana is owing Nigeria $160m and your tweet is saying the debt Ghana was called out for and acknowledged by the tweet was 'immediately ' paid one year before they were called out as onigbese undecided The amount in the tweet is even $60m and not the $160m reported by the Punch, meaning that it is possible the debt ballooned from $60m to $160 within a year! shocked

That tweet is either false or it refers to a previous debt. Either way,it means Ghana is a chronic or serial debtor to Nigeria. This is not good for Ghana and the inability of a country to pay its debt on time may just be liquidity problems. This is a small money and in fact just about half the amount just a single Nigerian company, Tony Elumelu's Heirs Oil and Gas, paid to acquire a Shell Asset few days ago yet a whole Ghana is struggling to pay $160m. Ghana is truly a small country with small economy and that's why the big boys like Microsoft, Google, Facebook and lately Elon Musk's Starlink called Nigeria home.

My worry now is that, how much is Ghana owing these Nigerian companies and by extension Nigeria through the NNPC? Will the debt not crush our companies and lead to loss of jobs in Nigeria? Will Ghana pay interest on these mounting debt if they still remain unpaid and keep mounting since 2018? This should interest the Nigerian governors who have been blaming NNPC for failing to remit some funds while still claiming to be using their earnings to fund oil subsidy here in Nigeria.
