Dana, Ibom Air Enter First of its kind Domestic Airlines Full Codeshare Agreement

UYO - MAY 21st, 2021

In the quest to offer more route options, schedule options and easy connectivity for the flying public, Dana Air and Ibom Air have announced the first-ever domestic airline codeshare agreement. The partnership, which will be referred to as the Dana-Ibom Air Alliance, was signed at the Corporate Headquarters of Ibom Air, at the Victor Attah International Airport Uyo, on Friday the 21st of May, 2021.

This partnership, which is a significant milestone for Nigeria's aviation industry, affords Dana Air and Ibom Air a business arrangement whereby both airlines jointly offer flights to common destinations, while operating services to destinations that are not within each airline’s regular routes. By doing so, both airlines expand their market presence and competitive footprint in the interest of the flying public.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Accountable Manager/Chief Operating Officer of Dana Air, Obi Mbanuzuo said, "This discussion started about a year ago and we are happy to be here today, formalising it. This is the first of its kind for domestic airlines in Nigeria and a huge step in the right direction for both Dana Air and Ibom Air."

"It is a partnership for sustainable growth, and connectivity for the flying public as Ibom Air passengers can now fly Dana Air to Owerri and all other Dana Air destinations while our guests can now fly to Calabar, Uyo and other Ibom Air destinations."

"Dana Air, like Ibom Air, is committed to the growth of the aviation industry and both airlines have shown great commitment to customer satisfaction, schedule reliability, operational efficiency, passion, and innovation. We do hope that this partnership between Ibom Air and Dana Air will set a positive precedent for the greater good of the industry."

Also speaking at the event, the COO of Ibom Air, George Uriesi, said "the alliance will offer increased frequencies into common destinations as well as codeshare flights into destinations each airline does not operate into, providing more options for passengers and business retention for both airlines." According to him, "with the initiation of this business alliance, both airlines have embraced a key global best practice. At Ibom Air, our business model and unwavering commitment remains schedule reliability, on-time departures and excellent service. Hence, we are constantly on the lookout for better and more effective ways to serve our customers."

Ibom Air operates multiple daily flights between Uyo, Lagos, Abuja, Calabar and Enugu and will be launching the Port Harcourt destination from 07 June, 2021. Having commenced operations in June 2019 using CRJ900 aircraft, an additional two brand new Airbus A220 aircraft will be joining the fleet this month, bringing the number of aircraft in the fleet to 7 and making it one of Nigeria's fastest growing airlines. Ibom Air has delivered a consistent average of 95% schedule reliability and on-time performance since its inception.

Dana Air is one of Nigeria's leading airlines with a mixed fleet of 9 aircraft and daily flights from Lagos to Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Owerri. The airline is reputed for its world-class in-flight service, innovative online product and services and top notch on-time performance.

The Codeshare alliance will commence full service in June 2021.

This business initiative can only come from a business oriented governor who sees tomorrow.

Deacon Udom Emmanuel has been making viable used of the state financial resources by investing in ventures that'll yield returns into the state's treasury.

I remember this is how the defunct western region invested into business such as banking, real estates, agriculture and hospitality sectors that were fetching the states money while not necessarily waiting for monthly allocation from FG.

Many thanks to the succeeding governors and managers of those ventures who politically squandered those businesses under this democratic dispensation.

I urge other state governors to use the Udom's model to grow their States enterprisingly.

I hope the new Ibom air international routes will be:
1. Uyo- Accra or at worst Uyo-Lagos-Accra
2. Uyo-Banjul or at worst Uyo-Lagos-Banjul

Anything else, Ibom air will just be developing the Lagos hub rather than the Uyo hub.

By now we should be having Uyo - Kano, Uyo-Duala, Uyo-Dubai or London, etc

TOO rapidly

How rapidly exactly is the expansion? Can it be measured? e.g. in percentage terms

Without data it becomes beer parlour talk

There are strategic , tactical and financial risk that come with airline operation expansion and it's something well documented in the aviation industry and I was only drawing attention to it that expansion means the airline staff and processes need to be upgraded to meet it's new operational size of there will be problem ..many small airlines have fallen by the way because of this and Ibom air need to put all hands on deck especially as its is even moving to start using multiple distinct platforms as aircrafts...Heard they have purchased Airbuses which means apart from bombardiers they will now A220s in their fleet meaning new set of separate procedures of those aircraft many people need to now be abreast with and new cost because now the have to start paying for stairs which they didn't before because the CRJ came bwith onboard stairs which made their embarking and disembarking times faster than other airlines that had to wait for FAAN stairs to be either wheeled into place or canopy walk alloted

The question is how much expansion is right , too much or too little? Is there any objective way of determining that

How much expansion is actually going on at Ibomair? 5% 10 % 20 % Year on year?

Do you have any data ?

Airlines have "fallen" for MANY reasons. To attribute this to "expansion" is a dogmatic assertion.

It could be poor management, COVID 19, etc

Without data it is impossible to say whether the expansion trajectory is appropriate

Take it if from me pound for pound Ibom Air is the most worked airline in Nigeria..within 3 months from their launch the moved 50 thousand passengers with just two CRJ9s which is a great feat by any standard and before their 2nd anniversary that had flown over 500 thousand passengers that alone should tell you the passenger demand for the is very high , infact I prefer any of my flights these day to Abj to be Ibom air because of their timeliness... I am not saying they are prepared for expansion but saying with expansion comes greater responsibility and Ibom Air must remember that . From a Birdseye view I will say their overall expansion for routes and aircrafts is about 50 percent and the demand from passengers might even be above 200 times what they projected
