How To Build A Great Export Company

While most great companies are profitable and generate high revenues, that’s not what makes them great.

What makes a company great is its ability to communicate its causes, beliefs, and values in everything it does, stays true to them consistently, and in the process, builds an army of loyal customers that would defend the company no matter what, buy from the company even when some competitors have better products & services at cheaper prices, and even more importantly, to create a cult-like following where customers and prospects find it difficult to clearly articulate why they prefer your brand, as product features and benefits alone will not be able to tell the full story.

Nigeria produces 500,000MT of unrefined shea butter annually (with a trade value of $400,000), which makes it the top producer of shea butter in the world. It is produced primarily in Kwara and Niger states; other states include Kogi, Kebbi and Ogun.

A key challenge for an exporter is to decide on the right price for their product. This price must be reasonable, yet competitive. A high price can be competitive if it comes with a high product quality, prompt delivery, specialised packaging and added benefits.

Quality assessment is usually a great problem for a lot of exporters and managing this risk is key to building a profitable fast-growing international trade business, since meeting your obligations would help spread word of mouth. But when you fail to meet the quality standards specified, you wouldn’t just lose clients, but would also very likely lose your investment.

Quality Control

Improving quality control standards will assist Nigeria in expanding its export markets in coming years. In a report released in November 2017, FMARD outlined its work on the Single Quality Control Management Plan. This five-year action plan, running to 2021, aims to bring Nigerian agricultural exports up to international standards. As it was requested by the EU, FMARD and EU officials met twice in early 2017 to discuss food safety and the “zero reject” goal for Nigeria’s products. FMARD officials have stated that standards and quality control measures are now being developed to improve compliance with EU regulations.

One major intervention will be to improve food packaging through reforms.

You want to send out your product samples to get feedback from buyers. But how can you then find your buyers? Fortunately there are plenty of international buyer directories available (some free of charge, others with paid subscriptions).
