Even the inventors of Christianity don't carry the religion on their head like Nigerians. I have no issue with all these mega churches but I cannot stand the fact that a majority of their members are living in poverty while the leaders of the church and their children live in opulence. Rather than opening gigantic auditoriums or branches every day, they should spend more money giving back to the community. Open free hospitals, free schools, free houses for the homeless and stuff like that.

You are exactly correct! Religion is big business in Nigeria. So many people want to become pastor or cleric left and right. We have prayed so much in Nigeria that God should have answered our prayers by now and we should have became a great nation. One would think with all that religion, we would be the holiest people on earth, but no. The amount of wickedness in this country hidden behind the cloak of religiosity is astounding. The politicians steal left and right, the average Nigerian is a tribalist, common decency is lacking, and many are looking for ways to defraud others. But the same people will go to church on Sunday to wash away their sins.

This is my take:
It's not that the pastors are thieves or false prophets, I don't know, but the thing is that religion or being religion is a core value in Nigeria. The kind of energy and priority that Nigerian Christians put in their churches and denominations, if such were put into other sectors like economy, education, healthcare, security etc we would have been a second world country at least.
Christians here are always willing to put all their faith, talent, energy and dedication into the development of their churches and it's pastors, they are always willing to make sure their church or denomination is the best and thus they find an identity with their church, and what you put love and dedication into grows. Sadly we do not channel so much loyalty like that into our country, our communities and even our personal lives. It's funny when people contribute money to renovate or rebuild their churches but find it hard to come together and contribute money to fix the bad road or electricity problem in their streets. People never forget to appreciate pastors but not people like nurses, teachers or security men.
Most Pentecostal churches came into prominence during the 90's in Nigeria when poverty and bad government were becoming mainstream, poverty straightens religion. The music, the vibrant gusto, the messages and miracles in the times of peril attracted a lot of people to Pentecostals and their influence continued to grow in wealth and number. And as things are going south in Nigeria, more and more churches are popping up and growing because people need miracles in their life, they need prosperity, they need encouragement during this hard times. The church is immune to some level of scrutiny and criticism because when it comes to religion people tend to abandon logic and leave the thinking to the Divine, and those who tend to raise questions tend to be seen as pagans, lost souls, or agents of Satan.

Godless China is prospering while religious Nigeria, where every activity begins with a prayer, goes about begging for loans and grants. Japan doesn’t lace every discussion with ‘God’, ‘Jesus’ or ‘Allah’, but it is one of the least corrupt nations on earth while we are categorized as “fantastically corrupt” in the world.

U scribbled down an utter crap!

A nation, pple or person without d Living God is ultimately a doom stuff already!

Not surprised

We are always competing with ourselves. No amount of possessions will change the fact that we don't feel inferior.
This is how an average Nigerian man thinks.
And we collectively pay for it as we are doing now.
