A socio-political group, Rescue Nigeria Economy Project (RNEP) has demanded that the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola SAN should be probe over what it called the shoddy job done on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The group, in a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Dennis Alamu-George on Sunday said the job done on the bridge does not reflect the cost and time used as many parts of the bridge are still in bad shape.

It will be recalled that the bridge was reopened on February 28, 2021, after undergoing rehabilitation since 2019.

Fashola in an interview on Sunday had said that additional work continuing underneath the Third Mainland Bridge would last for several months.

Fashola emphasized that work would continue on the substructure in spite of reopening the bridge to traffic.

“We have finished the super structure work that is the pavement that you drive on, we have changed the bearings and the expansion joints and we are now working on the substructure. Work is still going on under the bridge even though people are now driving and thinking we have finished".

“We have finished the top, people can move; we don’t need to close the bridge. Some of the concrete have been damaged; some of the reinforcement, the steel is showing some of the places where water splashes there is erosion so we are working there now.

“We are going to be there for many months to ensure we preserve the life of that infrastructure because we can’t afford to build a new one,’’ Fashola said.

But responding to the Minister, RNEP said “ Having driven through the supposedly rehabilitated Third Mainland Bridge, we must say that we are not impressed on the 11.8km bridge despite the huge cost and amount of time spent on it”.

“Many parts of the bridge, especially at the mid-section and the Adeniji Adele end are in bad shapes. Some speeding vehicles on getting to these bad spots had to slow down or swerve to the other lane. This can result in accidents if care is not taken”.

“We recalled that Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Zainab Ahmed, in her budget presentation said a sum of N4 billion will be expended to undertake the emergency rehabilitation and maintenance of the third mainland bridge. How can one justify that amount with that poor job?” the group asked.

“If you can close down the bridge for more than six months of repair, then we demand a thorough job, not one hapharzadly done that will still put the lives of people at risk.

“We hereby demand a probe of the Ministry of Works on the rehabilitation and a repair of the existing bad spots,” the group said.
