MATEJ MOHORIC TAKES EPIC STAGE 7 WIN AT LE CREUSOT

The day after Slovenia took the presidency of the council of the European Union, Matej Mohoric claimed his first stage win of the Tour de France at Le Creusot while Tadej Pogacar saved his day after being put in difficulty early in the race by a big breakaway group comprising Mathieu van der Poel who defended his yellow jersey with a brave heart. On the other hand, Primoz Roglic lost contact with the top guns. It’s a Grand Tour trilogy completed by Matej Mohoric after he won in Cuenca at La Vuelta 2017 and Gualdo Tadino at the 2018 Giro d’Italia.

Ben O’Connor of Australia won a cold and wet ninth stage of the Tour de France, from Cluses to Tignes, with an epic lone attack, and moved to just over two minutes behind the overall race leader and defending Tour champion, Tadej Pogacar.

“Just to be here in the first place is the first dream,” O’Connor said. “To achieve this today is testimony to everyone who’s believed in me over the years. It’s what you dream of and it’s so fulfilling and there’s so much joy. I’m loving every single moment.”

Bauke Mollema claimed a fine solo victory on stage 14 of the Tour de France as Guillaume Martin moved up to second overall behind Tadej Pogacar.

Dutchman Mollema broke clear of the rest of the breakaway with 42km of the 183.7km to Quillan left and won his second Tour stage by over a minute.

French rider Martin came home in a chasing group to move up seven places in the general classification.

Pogacar finished in a reduced peloton and leads by just over four minutes.

Mark Cavendish completed the stage well within the time limit alongside four of his Deceuninck-Quick-Step team-mates, over 25 minutes behind Mollema.

The Dutchman is over 30 minutes adrift in the general classification race this year but took advantage of indecision among his breakaway colleagues as he descended from the penultimate climb of the day on the Cote de Galinagues.

Once he had ridden clear of his 13 former companions - with an attack that bore similarities to his triumph on stage 15 into Le Puy-en-Velay in 2017 - he was able to pace himself perfectly to the finish.

"It's amazing to win a stage again," said Mollema

"I was feeling good so I thought, 'Let's go from far out'. I had the confidence I could ride alone and keep going for a long time."

Sunday's 191.3km route from Ceret to Andorre-La-Vieille sees the race leave France for the only time in this edition as it reaches the highest point on this year's route, at over 2,400m on the Port d'Envalira.

Sepp Kuss, of the Jumbo-Visma team, won stage 15 of the Tour de France, from Ceret to Andorra-La-Vieille, after a 32-rider breakaway broke up on the final climbs of the Port d’Envalira and the first category Col de Bexailis.

The 26-year-old Coloradan, who lives in Andorra during the season, held off the pursuing veteran, Alejandro Valverde, of the Movistar team, on the final descent, to take a career-first win in the Tour.

“I’m lost for words,” Kuss said. “To be honest, I’ve really suffered a lot in this Tour. I just didn’t feel I had the spice in the legs. Today I knew it was finishing where I live and I was really motivated.” https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/11/sepp-kuss-wins-first-tour-de-france-stage-but-tadej-pogacar-retains-lead

A superbly judged solo break from Patrick Konrad brought him his first Tour de France stage win, but it was a day when nothing changed in the GC standings.

Patrick Konrad of the Bora Hansgrohe team took a solo victory in the second Pyrenean stage of this year’s Tour de France, from Pas de la Casa to Saint-Gaudens.

The Austrian rider broke clear of his breakaway companions, four kilometres from the summit of the stage’s steepest climb, the Col de Portet d’Aspet, to seal his first Tour stage win three days after he finished second, on stage 14 to Quillan, and five days after his team mate Nils Pollitt won in Nimes.

Although Konrad was pursued by a group of nine riders in the closing kilometres, the Austrian national road race champion, who finished eighth in last year’s Giro d’Italia, held on to seal the biggest win of his career.

The Tour de France leader Tadej Pogacar repelled all assaults on his control of the race, with an imperious win at the top of the Col de Portet in the French Pyrenees, as Jonas Vingegaard of the Jumbo Visma team, and Richard Carapaz riding for Ineos Grenadiers, scrapped between each other to guarantee a top three finish in Paris.

Pogacar, leader of the UAE Emirates team, had described the Bastille Day stage, from Muret to the Col du Portet, as the hardest of the 2021 Tour. Despite that, on the mighty 16km climb of the Portet, it was defending champion Pogacar who drove the pace at the decisive moments and finally emerged through the mountain mist to claim his second stage win in this year’s Tour.

French prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into doping allegations against Tour de France cycling team Bahrain Victorious after police searched the outfit’s accommodation and bus on Wednesday following the 17th stage of the race.

The prosecutor’s office in the port city of Marseille said the investigation was into “acquisition, transport, possession, import of a prohibited substance or prohibited method for use by an athlete without medical justification”.

The Bahrain Victorious team, winners of two stages in this year’s Tour de France, were subjected to police raids at their team hotel on Wednesday evening, as team vehicles and hotel rooms were reportedly searched by up to 50 police officers, until 2am on Thursday morning.

Pogacar speaks: “It’s unbelievable ... after yesterday, today, I don’t know - I felt good and I’m really happy with the win ... it’s crazy. It’s a game for me, of course, it’s been a game since I started [cycling] and I’m enjoying playing it, yeah, I’m super happy ... maybe 50 per cent chance [of winning the Tour] it’s still three days, but it looks good ... It was super hard ... I just tried to forget about everything and focus.”

Is he worried about Vingegaard before the TT on Saturday? “Why should I be worried? ... Sometimes you can have a really bad day on a TT ... let’s hope it’s not a repeat [of what he did to Roglic last year].”

VAN AERT IN THE VINEYARD

Wout van Aert who came to the Tour de France with the first ambition of winning sprints and wearing the yellow jersey claimed an impressive time trial victory in the vineyard of Saint-Émilion after the Mont Ventoux stage. Kasper Asgreen and Jonas Vingegaard rounded out the podium of stage 20. Tadej Pogacar finished with 8th best time and retained the yellow jersey with an advantage of 5’20’’ over Vingegaard.

Instead of the record-breaking 35th stage victory for Cavendish then, it was Van Aert who added to his Ventoux and time trial wins, just ahead of Philipsen, who finished second for the third time this Tour.

"This Tour has just been amazing, such a rollercoaster," Van Aert said after the finish. "To finish off with a weekend like this is beyond expectations. A victory like this is priceless. Thanks to my incredible small team, especially Mike Teunissen who delivered me into a perfect position.
