First, subsidy is why we don't have functional refineries. The price control inherent in subsidy means that no one is going to invest in refineries because you would be selling fuel at a loss. Plus NNPC wastes its money on subsidizing fuel instead of maintaining and building its refineries.

But tell Nigerians the truth, they won't listen. We have been on this subsidy removal issue since 1993, when back then we were told to remove it, and we were calling those who advised us IMF slaves. Well, by 1994, NNPC started missing TAM on its refinereis, by 2011, our refinereis were operating at less than 10% capacity...as a result.

Nigerians love cheap fuel too much. Well, the cheap fuel is affecting us badly and driving us into debt. We are spending money we could have used for sensible things on the subsidy monster.

Meanwhile, Niger that we are importing fuel from has a functioning refinerey, because they sell fuel at N377 there...and thus the profit made is enough to fund their single refinery, and enable them to export to many African countries.

We better give up our addiction to cheap fuel.

Which subsidy are you talking about now? The one they claimed that it didn't exist when they were in opposition or the one they claimed that they have removed since 2016 or another one. Even Buhari was said to have alledged that any one who claims to be paying subsidy as far back as 2015 such person is a fraudster. Please educate us.

Slight correction...GEJ partially remoived subsidy, which manifested as a rise in fuel price from N65 to N97 in 2012, and later restored it partially which manifested as a reduction from N97 to N87 in 2015(Originally, GEJ wanted to raise prices to N140 IN 2012 FROM N65)

The problem was that in 2012, the landing cost of fuel was N99...and it rose to N132 in 2015..thus the amount we were paying in subsidy also rose.

All in all, we spent about N6 trillion or more naira between 2010-16 to maintain the subsidy at those prices. and EVEN then, outside Lagos and Abuja, prices were as high as N185 in some places

(As an example, in 2014, I bought fuel at N121 in Kaduna, N185 in Zaria, and in 2015, I bought fuel at N130 on the outskirts of Abuja. By 2013, fuel was high as N200 in some places even. A relative bought fuel at N170 somewhere else even. Only NNPC and some of the big marketers then had fuel at N97 and they did not have fuel most of the time, except NNPC...and there were LONG QUEUES then)

Buhari raised prices from N87 to N145 because the subsidy was becoming difficult to maintain at a landing cost of N132. N.B I am not a Buhari supporter, or a PDP supporter. Just FYI


1.There has always been a subsidy

2.Buhari saying 'there is no subsidy' was his way of showing his campaign chops.

3.In 2015...FUEL was at N87, while landing cost was at N132....meaning a subsidy of at least N45 was being paid on each liter of fuel...up from 2012 when fuel was at N97, while landing cost was at N99....SUBSIDY OF N2.

4.That's when Bubu raised prices to N145...eliminating the subsidy....until landing cost rose to N150 and above. Subsidy came back

5.Every government has done what Bubu has done. GEJ raised prices from N65 to N140 when landing costs were N99...and that led to protests which led to him reducing it to N97 and then to N87 3 YEARS later.

That's the simple explanation.

As for me...I supported subsidy removal since 2012. ITis a drain on our limited resources, and drives us into debt.
