Lastweek, one of the news daily headlines was Nigeria consumes 102million litres of pms daily, from 30million litres during GEJ days to a whooping 102million litres. The daily subsidy has climbed to 5.5billion naira....
Subsidy that the dullard said didnt add up, was invented by pdp to loot money.

Slight correction...GEJ partially remoived subsidy, which manifested as a rise in fuel price from N65 to N97 in 2012, and later restored it partially which manifested as a reduction from N97 to N87 in 2015(Originally, GEJ wanted to raise prices to N140 IN 2012 FROM N65)

The problem was that in 2012, the landing cost of fuel was N99...and it rose to N132 in 2015..thus the amount we were paying in subsidy also rose.

All in all, we spent about N6 trillion or more naira between 2010-16 to maintain the subsidy at those prices. and EVEN then, outside Lagos and Abuja, prices were as high as N185 in some places

(As an example, in 2014, I bought fuel at N121 in Kaduna, N185 in Zaria, and in 2015, I bought fuel at N130 on the outskirts of Abuja. By 2013, fuel was high as N200 in some places even. A relative bought fuel at N170 somewhere else even. Only NNPC and some of the big marketers then had fuel at N97 and they did not have fuel most of the time, except NNPC...and there were LONG QUEUES then)

Buhari raised prices from N87 to N145 because the subsidy was becoming difficult to maintain at a landing cost of N132. He eventually made NNPC the sole subsidsier of fuel as well as the sole importer in 2016...which in practice has meant NNPC is operating at a loss..and even now can no longer remit money

Diesel, which is used by transporters and truckers who carry people and food around Nigeria, is selling for N280 and people are moaning about someone saying petrol “should” (NOT will) be selling at N256 without subsidy. How exactly are the so-called “masses” benefiting from petrol subsidy in Nigeria? Even kerosene used by the so-called “masses” is NOT subsidized.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is spending TRILLIONS subsidizing petrol - more than the capital budget for each of education, healthcare, agriculture, and even roads! Literally choosing cheap fuel over better schools, hospitals and public transit systems!

Of course, a large part of that subsidized petrol is being SMUGGLED to neighboring countries for PRIVATE profit. SMH

Diesel used to power big generators and most machinery are NOT subsidized, as well as kerosene used as household fuel.

As I understand, landing cost is the import price of fuel per liter roughly..which covers cost of refining the fuel elsewhere, plus transporting it by ship to here

(We cannot refine fuel in Nigeria because most Nigerians want a subsidy to be paid on fuel.. which automatically means lower prices than what it would cost to refine it in Nigeria....meaning anyone who refines fuel in Nigeria would potentially end up refining it at a loss. And yes, that includes Dangote.)

Transport costs for fuel within Nigeria are covered by something called the equalisation fund...which is part of the whole subsidy money overall.The fund (which is now N11 per liter of fuel) is why fuel costs the same throughout the country (that does not happen elsehwere)
