what do you have to say about this?

APC griller is probably opposed to the move.

Back in 2012 most Nigerians opposed GEJ's removal of fuel subsidy, and that included the majority of GEJ supporters...yes they did not join the marches, but they did not approve of the removal either.

Thing is, very very few Nigerians support subsidy removal, and those who do mostly keep quiet about it. Because subsidy removal is something that comes with increased prices for all for a short time...before things get better. No politician or supporter loves increased prices.

APC griller will prolly say a few words of praise for his boss, but would oppose it. Because, like most Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, low fuel prices is an article of faith like the NHS is to the average brit.

.

But Buhari already cancelled subsidy.
He even made a public broadcast about it.

That's why fuel is selling for 145/litre.

Which subsidy are you talking about again?

Let's go back in time

1.In 2011, gej raised fuel from N65 to N140. At the time, the landing cost of fuel was N99 (WE was already importing all but 6 MILLION liters of fuel per day anyway)

At that time, subsidy was said to be dead.

Protests in Nigeria forced GEJ to reduce prices to N97 ...LANDING costs was N99 meaning we subsidsied fuel at N2 per liter.

2.Now it is 2015/6, Bubu is on the throne. Fuel landing cost was now N132. and we were selling it at N87. And even then the subsidies were not enough to cover for any losses, that by 2013/4, many fuel stations in Nigeria were selling fuel at prices from N100-210

Bubu raised fuel prices from N87 to N145, ending subsidy at that time...since landing cost was N132, no subsidy was paid.

3.But the problem is, the landing cost was still rising....and there were a lot of outstanding subsidy claims from GEJ's time (see why GEJ should have been left alone to increase prices to N140 then...they knew what was going to happen)

4.So Bubu

Made NNPC the sole importer and subsidsier of fuel, removing all other indepenent improters

Paid off outstanding subsidy claims

Finally brought back the subsidy when landing cost rose above N150 per liter....

5.Now landing cost is far above N200 , we pay at the pump from N162, and NNPC is running at a loss to keep subsidsing fuel.

Something has to give.

P.S APC , like many Nigerians did not understand how subsidy worked...hence Bubu's tone deaf critiques of subsidy when he was in opposition.

Why shouldn't we pay a ridiculous amount for petrol when your government has ensured the refineries never work.

Nigerians truly deserve what they are getting

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has said the cost of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, in the country should be N256 per litre.

Now, for the FOOLS, UNITY BEGGARS and B0K0HARI apologists who are jumping up and down in ecstasy because of the arrest of MNK, this is just a glimpse of one of the many HARDSHIPS that is about to befall you. Like I said in one of my earlier write ups, you can rejoice from now till the end of time, your standard of living in the ZOO would NEVER change. You will wake up each and every day with the same problems starring you in the face...like it or NOT.

Why not #300 or even #500.
Nonsense
...I know it that before Mr Dementia will complete his tenure we will pay #600 or #700 per litre of fuel.
God save us from the northern blind leaders.

I'm very sure you know more than the millions of Nigerians who groan in pains whenever pump price is increased, can you compare the daily consumption of fuel to that of diesel?
You are shallow and your economics is watery.

Those Nigerians groan out of IGNORANCE…
Perhaps like you, their knowledge of economics is both shallow and watery. grin

Diesel is used to transport the majority of people and goods/foods around Nigeria…
Yet Diesel and Kerosene used by many of the “masses” (as you called them) are NOT subsidized.

Conversely, the biggest users of passenger cars (using petrol) are the government and elite…
With the government at all levels (federal, state and LG) being the biggest single buyers of passenger cars.

Meanwhile, the artificially-fixed pricing of petrol for years deterred domestic refinery investment…
While allocating more money to subsidy than to education, health, agriculture and even infrastructure. SMH

grin grin grin
grin grin grin

The one that’s hidden in NNPC accounts as “under-recovery”….
Meaning it sells fuel for UNDER (or less than) the cost of importation.

That’s why the NNPC is the ONLY entity currently importing fuel…
Instead of the government paying that difference to private importers.

lol paying taxes that would be looted poor infrastructure & all that I don’t blame anybody traveling out anymore this country is doomed that’s the truth

If you do not pay your due taxes…
You are similarly “looting” from the those who pay taxes used to provide public services.

Ultimately, Nigeria’s condition is the culmination of the varying actions of ALL Nigerians (by commission or omission).

Lols who said Nigerians don't pay tax

Those countries they are running to have a functioning government who knew how many citizens they have and how to make life worth living for them.....pls don't compare life there with our hell Nigeria

All Civil servants pay tax by deduction from their salaries even a gate man , once your salary comes from the government.....

All business owners even pure water hawkers on the road pay tax to the government,...

A Shuttle driver , buses , Tricycles , Motorcycle etc pays a tax of #400 per day to the government, according to the decisions of their tax union

What you should be talking about is what has government done with the tax paid to them....

The money our darling daddy in Aso rock used to get a life in London and run medical check ups per month in London should be enough to feed the whole country for years, get our refinaries working ....

Go and do your research well my brother ......
We are doing the same thing as those people abroad do but we don't have the same human value as they do .....

You need to do your own research well my brother, and answer the SPECIFIC question I posed…
Is there fuel subsidy in those countries abroad (in the UK and US, they even add taxes to fuel prices)?! cheesy

9jaRealist:

Without presumption or prejudice (and assuming that you actually and timely pay all of your due taxes), the propensity of the average Nigerian to EVADE taxes is one of the contributing factors for the paucity of public services. The fact is that Nigeria reportedly has the LOWEST tax to GDP ratio in all of Africa (yes, even lower than many very poor African nations) speaks volumes. The reality is that, outside of the civil service and those subject to PAYE withholding taxes, the greater majority of income-earning Nigerians (in formal and informal employment or self-employment) ACTIVELY EVADE paying their due taxes or notoriously underpay (when/if they pay at all) - and yet everyone seems to expect world-class public services. Of course, a big reason is the Culture of Entitlement cultivated by the oil windfall that the overwhelming majority of Nigerians do not contribute to in any way at all!

I am well aware that many Nigerians would argue that they do (or should) not pay taxes because there is little or no evidence of tax revenues being put to good use or that said revenues are more than likely to be embezzled, but such an argument only renders the citizens just as culpable the rulers (I am loathe to refer to these lot as actual leaders). Every nation/society is a social construct built upon the basic premise of rights and responsibilities, perhaps best manifested the so-called “social contract” between the government and the governed. But every contract requires “consideration” - which means that you have to provide something to get something in return. Accordingly, when citizens fail to pay timely and fully pay their due taxes, it is not only a moral failing in the basic tenets of citizenship (those taxes can be likened to equity investment in the nation, from which citizens expect some form of returns) but also a more legalistic failure to uphold one’s obligations under the “social contract” - and consequently strips such derelict citizens of any (moral or other) right to complain.

Unfortunately, so many Nigerians have this rather weird notion of citizenship, whereunder citizens enjoy only rights but do not bear commensurate responsibilities. Yet, as with most of human experience, one most often gets what one pays for - and that’s if you’re lucky! Furthermore, Nigerians have a rather delusional misconception of the resources available to the state (even if politicians did not steal a significant portion of public resources, as they persistently do). Just for perspective, the US expended over $4 trillion just on healthcare last year (2020) and yet could not guarantee access to healthcare (or adequate and affordable healthcare) to all of its citizens - including to many actual taxpayers! Accordingly, even if Nigeria spent every single cent it earned from oil and gas sales ($32.6 billion in 2018, even before the pandemic decimated revenues in 2020, and for perspective Kuwait made $60.7 billion same year with a population of only 1 million nationals) solely on healthcare and neglected everything else, the government still wouldn’t have anywhere near the revenues to provide the sort of world-class healthcare across the nation and across all strata of society (even if our thieving politicians did not steal a penny - which of course they grossly do).

While fully cognizant of the gross failures of governments in Nigeria, it is sometimes irritating that Nigerians often act as if they have absolutely no agency in their own fortune (or perhaps more accurately, misfortune) - even discounting that the poorest Nigerians are often the most fervent supporters/voters of “Sai Baba” and the political elite, and even the supposedly educated class and/or middle-class will fanatically defend their “own” (defined by tribal, religious or such other base or primordial affiliation) in almost all circumstances (including corruption charges). Yet, every single CHALLENGE in our nation is also an OPPORTUNITY - and as life experience has amply illustrated, the most successful people and organizations are those who address or otherwise help solve challenges. In Nigeria, our eyes are too clouded with the torrent of tears from our wailing about our challenges that we fail to see opportunities arising therefrom.

The saying that every society DESERVES the leadership it gets couldn’t be more aptly demonstrated than in Nigeria!

I ignore childish and uncouth personal insults…
They merely betray your lack of substance and a crude personal upbringing.

On the SUBSTANTIVE discourse, you seem to be struggling with the very elementary concept of INCOME (and general) taxes…
Those USAGE ‘taxes’ or charges you cite are for services the payers SPECIFICALLY used. Who else would pay them? The Fairy Godmother?!

Meanwhile, INCOME and other general taxes accrue to the Treasury to pay for general public services and infrastructure, such as public education, healthcare, security, public transportation, roads, etc., even if the payers don’t specifically avail themselves of those things.
____________________________

Btw, please quit making juvenile Strawman Arguments. It is NOT mutually-exclusive to criticize the respective failures of government(s) and citizens. Accordingly, while my general discourse on Nigerians and taxes SPECIFICALLY “recognizes the gross failure of government”, it nonetheless does NOT excuse the equally gross failure of citizens to fulfill their basic civic responsibilities (such as paying income taxes).

Unfortunately, as I also previously noted, the saying that a nation DESERVES its leaders is aptly demonstrated in NIGERIA! SMH
