THIS IS FROM AMAZON.COM

International Shipping Policies
Your packages may be subject to the customs fees and import duties of the country to which you have your order shipped. See both International Shipping Restrictions and Customs Information for more details.

The total shipping charge will be displayed on the last page of the order form, before you submit your order. Here is the equation we use to calculate the total shipping cost:

(Highest Applicable Per-Shipment Cost) + (Number of Items x Per-Item Cost) = Total Shipping Fee

For more information about total delivery time,

Amazon Global Program
Import Fees Deposit
The Amazon Global Program offers customers a unique service: duty and tax estimation during checkout and customs clearance on your behalf for certain eligible countries. When products are shipped to the eligible countries using eligible ship options included in the Amazon Global Program, an Import Fees Deposit will be estimated and collected for the shipment. With your authorization, such funds will be used by the carrier or another agent to pay the Import Fees on behalf of you (or the recipient's behalf) to the appropriate authorities of the destination country (See detail below).

Read below for the answers to further questions about the Import Fees Deposit and applicable Terms and Conditions.

Which products does the Import Fees Deposit apply to?

Items sent to eligible countries via Priority International Shipping and in certain cases via Standard or Expedited International Shipping will have an estimated Import Fees Deposit applied to the order. The payment of import fees is the responsibility of the importer and is levied based on the laws of the country into which the products are being shipped.

What if the actual Import Fees are less than the Import Fees Deposit I was charged?

If the actual Import Fees (paid by carrier on behalf of the recipient to the customs and tax authorities of the destination country) are less than the Import Fees Deposit collected by us on your behalf, you will automatically be refunded the difference to the payment method you used for the order. You will receive a notification e-mail to confirm the amount of the refund. The process takes 60 days from the shipment date.

What if the actual Import Fees are more than the Import Fees Deposit I was charged?

For items sold by Amazon Export Sales, Inc., you will not be charged any additional fees if the actual Import Fees exceed the Import Fees Deposit we estimated. For items sold by Merchants, please check the applicable Merchant's policies.

How do you estimate the amount of the Import Fees Deposit?

The Amazon Global Program uses software to determine the estimated duties, taxes, and fees associated with each item in the order for the destination country selected during the checkout process.

How can the estimated Import Fees Deposit differ from the actual import duties and fees payable?

The Import Fees Deposit is an estimation of the taxes and duties that may apply and is not an actual calculation of the taxes and duties. In addition, customs regulations and tax rates applicable to certain goods may change between the date the taxes and duties were estimated and the applicable taxes and duties on the date of entry. Also, classification of goods in various countries and regions may be different.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF CARRIAGE (“Terms and Conditions”)
IMPORTANT NOTICE

When ordering DHL’s services you, as “Shipper”, are agreeing, on your behalf and on behalf of anyone else with an interest in the Shipment, that the Terms and Conditions shall apply from the time that DHL accepts the Shipment unless otherwise agreed in writing by an authorised officer of DHL.
“Shipment” means all documents or parcels that travel under one waybill and which may be carried by any means DHL chooses, including air, road or any other carrier. A “waybill” shall include any label produced by DHL automated systems, waybill, or consignment note and shall incorporate these Terms and Conditions. Every Shipment is transported on a limited liability basis as provided herein. If Shipper requires greater protection, then insurance may be arranged at an additional cost. (Please see below for further information). “DHL” means any member of the DHL Express Network.

its packaging is defective or inadequate.

3. Deliveries and Undeliverables

Shipments cannot be delivered to PO boxes or postal codes. Shipments are delivered to the Receiver’s address given by Shipper (which in the case of mail services shall be deemed to be the first receiving postal service) but not necessarily to the named Receiver personally. Shipments to addresses with a central receiving area will be delivered to that area. If the Shipment is deemed to be unacceptable, or it has been undervalued for customs purposes, or Receiver cannot be reasonably identified or located, or Receiver refuses delivery or to pay for delivery, DHL shall use reasonable efforts to return the Shipment to Shipper at Shipper’s cost, failing which the Shipment may be released, disposed of or sold by DHL without incurring any liability whatsoever to Shipper or anyone else, with the proceeds applied against service charges and related administrative costs and the balance of the proceeds of a sale to be returned to Shipper.

Claims are limited to one claim per Shipment settlement of which will be full and final settlement for all loss or damage in connection therewith. If Shipper regards these limits as insufficient it must make a special declaration of value and request insurance as described in Section 8 (Shipment Insurance) or make its own insurance arrangements, failing which Shipper assumes all risks of loss or damage.

7. Time Limits for Claims

All claims must be submitted in writing to DHL within thirty (30) days from the date that DHL accepted the Shipment, failing which DHL shall have no liability whatsoever.

Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by aktunde(m): 11:05pm On May 09, 2011
some people are confused

by law some goods has to pay duty in every in the world

becoz of corrupt officials and a corrupt system people think that its bribe all the way when some of it its duty required by government

so now some people cant seperate duty and bribes
very few courier companies would pay duty for you, you have to pay yourself

I guess you talk like this because you have never had this kind of experience before. In agreement with Richvkunt, Customs duty is calculated on dutiable items based on:
1.Cost of the goods.
2.Insurance.
3.Freight charges.

So, since when did the 3 years tax clearance of the sender, the place of work of the sender, the appointment letter (abroad) become parts of the requirements needed to get your goods from the customs? What if you buy these items online? You want to ask the seller who you don't even know for his 3 years tax clearance? I tell you, these are the things the NDLEA asked me to bring to collect my phone from them. I used FEDEX then. They deliberately tell you to bring things that are impossble to get, just to frustrate you into a negotiation. So, you call that part custom duty? Take it or leave it; it is much more easier to clear a one million dollar worth of goods at the seaport, than to claim a twenty dollar phone hanging between a corrupt NDLEA and the courier company . I think they work hand-in-hand and they share the money. This thread is reminding me of my own experience again, and its refreshing my annoyance once again.

Welcome to Naija. Normally there is nothing like a customs duty on DHL/Fedexed items. The company is suppose to post the item directly to the consignee!! There is something fishy here. Maybe either a customs officer is interested in the laptop or  a DHL staff is trying to be 'funy'. Waste no time in shouting at those layabouts or they will cart away all these items,
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by toyemz(f): 11:22pm On May 09, 2011
@poster
honestly to avoid all this trouble i use door to door delivery
it just saves on so much hassle and if it does exist ,i don't get to see it or be part of it
just look for a reliable courier

Yes there is something like duty on Dhl and Fedexed goods. My experience with DHL has been that they paid the duty for me and billed me on delivery or phoned me to inform me that they are coming and that duty would be payable. Either way, I have always been given an invoice for the payment. There was one time though that my supplier sent the goods through EMS and they ended up at a post office in Somolu. I had to go there and pay duty but it wasn't more than 4k for goods worth $1,300.00. This 4k though went straight to the custom officer's pocket as I didn't get a receipt.

I think if you want to send goods, you need to request the supplier/sender to under invoice it for duty purposes. All China suppliers I've dealt with would be too happy to do this for you.

Use one of those nigerian owned courier services. Make sure you use one that is recommended.
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by hercules07: 5:08am On May 10, 2011
People should stop asking others to devalue their items, I have done a lot of importations and have never paid NDLEA guys anything, the reason for that is because I always have my invoices and the foreign transfer slips with me, they do not usually hold items that are imported by companies as long as the company is duly registered. As per gifts, get the guy over there to send it to a company or your company with your name as the recipient, that should free you from the NDLEA guys, though you must pay the proper duties, abi una no wan pay?
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by blacklion(m): 8:32am On May 10, 2011
Please get your facts right. Laptops and other electronic items, whether brand new or used, are dutiable goods. Even a single unit is dutiable, its not only when you import multiple units. Clothes, personal toiletries etc are also dutiable when sent by cargo because they are treated as commercial items; they are however not dutiable when you carry them with you on an international flight because they are treated 'personal effects'.

It is perfectly normal and legitimate for Nigerian customs to levy customs duty on laptops, flash drives, clothes etc imported via DHL or UPS etc. Its a worldwide practice. If you send a laptop or electronic item from the US to the UK, HMRC will levy customs duty. Period. So Nigeria is not an exception.

However, there are many naija shipping agents in the US and UK who charge 'all inclusive' air cargo shipping fees plus 'door-to-door' delivery services. The items are delivered to your house. Using these means, you can bring in items such as LCD and plasma TVs, laptops, cameras, mobile phones, clothes etc but only in small quantities - 2 or 3 max. I believe these naija agents have contacts within the Nigerian Customs that enables them to bring in these goods at a 'negotiated' rate. This is the same means employed by Nigerian traders importing goods via air cargo from Dubai and China.
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by Redstone(m): 9:11am On May 10, 2011
Hello House, 9ja is a country riddled with corrupt govt officials, I don't see what business NDLEA and even NAFDAC has with laptops and other IT items.

Normally for dutiable items, you have to pay, and for laptops, it is 5% of total value of goods, and other minor saundry chages which are less than 3%.

I ship through DHL and that is what I pay, most time DHL contacts me with the value and account information, I pay and submit the teller by hand of scanned to their email and within 48 hours, they deliver.

If NDLEA or NAFDAC invites you, then there is another thing to this and it has to do with asking you lots of impossible questions like the invoice of goods, evidence of payment, and all sorts, and all these are targetted at making it impossible for you to get your goods so that they can ask for bribe (egunje)

so please be informed, IT products, laptops, and computers attracts 5% duty, while knockdown IT products/spare or assembly parts are duty free as at OBJ's tenure.

God bless you all.

Thanks all,

The DHL way bill is still showing ' clearance processing complete at Lagos". Its now almost 2 weeks and I am so afraid about the safety of the items.

I have sent someone to their Awolowo Road office to find out what's happening. I sent a laptop to my aunty last year and the same thing happened. She went to Lagos airport to see a custom man holding the laptop and asking for 'something' before he can release it. She haggled and eventually did not pay anything to him before collecting the item.

bomboyi:

Next time, tell the sender of the goods to write gifts on the package and undervalue the goods

This is actually the trick I have been using for a long time now and it has always worked perfectly. I actually use a freight forwarder (MYUS) to ship things I buy online to Naija and because I have a good relationship with them, they help me undervalue the goods to as low as 75%. Also, almost everything I buy online, i always make sure I include the GIFT option right from the shopping site. A recipient IS NOT SUPPOSED TO PAY FOR A GIFT ITEM.
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by igbogolo: 4:13pm On May 10, 2011

Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by Nobody: 5:44pm On May 10, 2011
@puppiluv
yes , i work with one, the smaller ones and very private, i too have experienced that with ups , that was before i joined a courier company, infact i stopped requesting things from my people abroad because i know i won't get them or i will pay through my nose to get it. if people like Toyota Nigeria can leave DHL for our one flat courier company, then something is really wrong, yes they did, complained seriously of missing items and co. well their loss is our gain. and believe me Toyota Nig is not the only ones, there are other big company that you cannot imagine would leave. How do you think all the importers get their goos and still make gains? we do freight for alot of computer village importers too. and it is door to door. you just give us the pick up address and the packing details. you pay after your good have arrived Nigeria , at our office. and it has to be the agreed rate. when it is door to door, the duties and details are not your business, you just pay your rate and collect your goods . period. for inquiries call our office is at Airport Road
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by Nobody: 5:47pm On May 10, 2011
Like i said. we don't pick up less than 100kg of cargo.
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by Nobody: 5:51pm On May 10, 2011
MAS GLOBAL EXPRESS AND LOGISTICS. 23 OSOLO WAY , 7/8 BUSTOP AJAO. It is usually for business people, not  for just gift items.  but if the item is up to 100kg, we can pick it up

Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by webgenius(m): 9:42pm On May 10, 2011
Similar experience. Sister decided to purchase groom's outfit, bestman's outfit and my bro's, labelled them gift items, items were mistakenly overpriced by her neighbour in whose custody they were left for pick-up as she had to go to work( friend assumed cost was GBP 200 for each instead of cost of all, sent by DHL, arrived Friday and no communication until Tuesday 4 days to wedding.Asked to pay N109,000, sister sent scanned copy of receipt, DHL very unhelpful considering that the contract was with DHL and not Customs. Senior official said I should go and "settle" with customs otherwise I may have to do my wedding wearing my singlet and shorts. Was to travel Wednesday morning, as wedding was outside Lagos. Customs said to bring at least half of that amount or no deal. I decided that goods should be returned to Sender to deprive them of stealing my suits after they would be sent to govt bonded warehouses, and then purchase ready made in shops here in Lagos.
The lesson here the way I see it is that the Courier companies are loosing big time as people continue to have nasty experiences like these.I wish management would see these complaints and respond otherwise one day they would become like NITEL, AIRWAYS and other failed companies. I have vowed NEVER to use DHL again and to campaign actively against them. If goods require duty, then they should inform the Sender at the point of transaction and give details of the cost so that you make an informed decision.
It's a big cartel in the cargo section as the couriers create this problem and make you come to them to "settle"

They won't give your folks the item untill you/they pay that money and I think after 21days if you track it again the status will read "processing to be sent back to Origin" it has happen to me before and when I called DHL they told me they have no control over naija custom and what they do.

I am seriously discouraged right now about sending my furniture and household equipments.
If for books and laptop I am made to pay this amount of money, what happens when i send my sofa's, rugs, TV, fridges, cookers, washing machine, beds etc?
Is there anyone who can send these items without problems from switzerland? I do not think I have the stomach to use dhl again.

or is it better to put the items in a container? but I am not buying a car, and that may be a waste of space and may be more expensive.
Any ideas on how to move large household furniture and bulky stuff?
Re: Nigeria Customs And Dhl Problem by bolee(f): 2:37pm On May 11, 2011
I had a similiar experience, tracked an iPhone till it got stuck in Lagos (as usual)
A call to DHL revealed it was with Customs as it was dutiable.
I checked Customs site and discovered it was true. I got the GTB Account number for Customs and paid 13K and picked it up at the airport.
Bottom line is I will never use DHL again, cause they did not manage expectations at the point of engagement. They got their money upfront and careless what happens to the goods once it is in Nigeria.

EMS isnt the best option at all.

I got a medical Equipment from E-bay which had to come in from China.I actually got it on the first Instance. But on testing the Equipment it got burnt cos the power rating was 110V against our 220V. I was asked to send it back to them for a new one, that i gladly did. They sent another one for me, with a tracking Number, its getting to 2 months now, and i havent seen it.The tracker only stoped at Beijing. I was directed to go and check with Nigeria customs. For God sake what business do i have with Customs.EMS doesnt seem to know the way about of my Machine. What do i do please someone advice me.
