vickydevoka:With civil engineering you can work anywhere but architecture has a lot of constrains. Civil engineers design building plans too and execute the project as planned. There are so many projects that you can be contracted to supervise as such on like architecture. The list is endless. |

Ahmerdibnz: Stop this bro. You are misleading the boy. It’s a blatant lie! It’s basically the other way round in a typical Construction setting. The Architect does his designs, then employs the service of the structural engineer for the structure and pays him off. It’s better to just advice the boy based on true facts and not your imaginations. 2 Likes |

I have being involved in so many state govenment project Lagos State Ministry of works and infastructure.... I am an electrical engr. But i virtually interpreted all the archi designs on 10km road network but when it comes to field work baba i gats go learn more of structural design because wetin de paper different from what we saw on site thereby need for adjustment and modifications which demands high calculations which i the archi on the project never invovles. 2 Likes |

psalmuelwater: Architects will employ civil engineers when job gets complex because they dont have broad knowledge of the behaviour of buildings. On the contrary, a civil engineer can do what an architect does so no need for him to hire one NB: I'm talking about the Nigeria. So dont relate my posts to the abroad work atmosphere Oggolden001 Ahmerdibnz 1 Like |

brandsoncharlie: That is quackery. Stop encouraging quackery. But then in Nigeria, everyone can do everything tho. An architect in many instances with the use of some structural softwares and little coaching can do the structural drawing for his designs. So, that cancels your idea about a civil Engr doing an architects work. Everyone can do everything but that is QUACKERY AND ILLEGAL! 2 Likes |

I’m an architect and I will tell you for a fact that architecture in Nigeria is getting useless. Same with most professional courses. The stress and money spent in school is in no way equivalent to the rewards or benefit. If you’re studying architecture, it should solely be out of passion Cos that might be the only thing keeping you going. On which course is better to study, traditionally, both courses are good. If you like to delve more into construction and structural detailing, pls go for civil engineering. If you want your core to be designing, architecture best suits you. Don’t get deceived, there are a lot architects and poor engineers. Don’t be deceive that you can work on your own in this industry. It’s possible but you have to pay your dues. All in all, in Nigeria you’ll need God and connection. My advice, study a course you have passion in and wouldn’t stress you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be any the above two. 4 Likes |

Miscellaneous: You mean a civil engineer can undertake a vast architectural design of a complex project? Like a stadium? Conference centers? Stop this joke bro. It’s expensive and misleading to the younger generation. Someone in the construction industry shouldn’t be found saying this. |

First of all, let's start from academic pursuit.... Architecture deals less with Maths at school level than Civil Engineering which takes the whole years of Advanced Engineering maths... So how good are you with furthering your Maths than dropping Maths? Then in Architecture, how good are you in design creation( functional thinking designs) , can you pick graphics easily?.... Can you stand your lectures criticising your design? Stressing you to the core with quick designs and criticism of all sorts... How fast can you drive into a design and come out producing something reasonable How determined can you be to stick to what you were advised to lose hope in? Hope you are financially capable as well? As you must spend always buying sheets , etc Then after School..... As a Civil Engineer,.. first, how patience are you to learn ? look at your family position, is it more like starting a hussling life if you can't be connected by your family or can your parents connect you? Or get you a good firm to be their project Engr? If not., How social are you? To mingle and get works easily without much tendering around ? This must work with how skillful, well groomed and focused to the core you are inorder to sell off even when you are not in a place..... As an Architect, you need patience connecting to the right people, if you have a better family, your nature of jobs from close relations will skyrocket you even from a tender stage, just make sure you can design well following the cannons of Architecture and deliver on time as well......this can even make you be independent than working in a firm that may pay you less... Remember a Civil Engineer can either go into Structures,( Buildings or Highway ( road construction or Waterways ( Bridge constructions) but the first is always considered as you may not have the right trust to start others even when you know better that Julius Berger..... Architects in Nigeria are likely not grouped to area of specialty due to lack of School of Architecture in Nigeria... So from what I have stated, is left for you to conclude on which career to choose as both Architecture and Civil Engineering are nice course ...... Am an Architect anyway.....may you choose wisely 3 Likes |
