Ashleigh Barty defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 to win the 2021 Wimbledon women’s singles title. The world no. 1 needed an hour and 56 minutes to wrap up the win over the 13th-ranked Czech Republican. Barty started off on a dominant front and raced away to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set.
The Australian also won the first 14 games of the set before Pliskova won her first point in the match. Pliskova surrendered her serve twice before breaking back Barty in the fifth game to put herself on the scoreboard. However, a third break promptly handed back to the world no.1 the advantage she’d briefly squandered. Nonetheless, Barty’s service woes also spilled over and she was broken while serving for the set in the seventh game. The ninth game of the set saw Pliskova hold serve for the first time in the set and while there was pressure on Barty as she served for the set the second time, she didn’t miss and went on to lead in the match.
At the start of the match, Pliskova’s game looked a lot unsettled as compared to Barty who played freely on the other side of the net. But as the set progressed, Pliskova, too, had gotten better control over her shots and was able to draw out the errors from Barty.
