Sierra Leone Abolishes Death Penalty by fergie001: 5:45pm On Jul 23, 2021 |
#Sierra Leone’s Parliament has just repealed the death penalty. The first clause of the piece of legislation which expressly expunges capital punishment has just been unanimously approved by the House. Rest of the bill is being debated. SOURCE The Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2021 passed unanimously in Sierra Leone's Parliament today and eradicated capital punishment for persons convicted of crimes such as murder, aggravated robbery & treason, removing the threat of execution for those currently on death row. SOURCE Many have hailed this step: including NGOs (AdvocAid, Amnesty International & Death Penalty Project), as well as the UK Foreign Secretary. Fantastic to see that the Sierra Leonean Parliament has voted to abolish the death penalty. Congratulations to @PresidentBio & the people of Sierra Leone on this important milestone. The UK will continue to support Sierra Leone in the promotion & protection of human rights Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom, Dominic Raab Sierra Leone's President, Julius Maada Bio, has remained a strong advocate for the abrogation of the Death Penalty Act. There has been no Court-backed execution in the Sierra-Leone since 1998 but Judges continue to impose the mandatory Death sanction for capital crimes. At least 78 persons are on death row, all of whom will have their death sentences rescinded. The small West African nation becomes the 23rd African Country & 110th in the World to abolish the Death Penalty; joining ECOWAS neighbours: Guinea, Benin Republic, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo & Senegal. This society has lost its sense of right and wrong. They haven't given enough thought to this decision and as it stands, there will be an increase in crime because criminals will no longer be threatened with the punishment of death 49 Likes 1 Share |

Ammishaddai:This was the same reason that made the Gambian Parliament turn down the President's Bill to abrogate the Death Penalty Act. I believe he is also trying to resurrect the Bill. Ghana's stalled....& Nigeria with the highest number of Death row inmates in Africa (about 2700), no shaking. 4 Likes |

Even the guy that assassinated one of the former PMs of Israel is still in prison. It mustn't always end in death for criminals. 5 Likes 1 Share |

The abolishment or non implementation of tge death penalty is a major cause of frequent killings. When a criminal knows that he won't be killed for murdering innocent people, it doesn't augur well for a peaceful society. If every convicted BHT, kidnapper, kidnapper and armed robbers have been sent to their ancestors, it will have sent a message of "An Eye for an eye". 12 Likes 3 Shares |

Sierra Loene is a sovereign nation and should be able to decide what's good for the citizens. However I feel premeditated murder once established with incontrovertible evidences should still carry the capital punishment. 9 Likes 1 Share |

In a progressive move, instead of replacing the death penalty with a mandatory life sentence, Sierra Leone will move to a system of judicial discretion where Judges are able to consider mitigating circumstances. It will have both advantages and disadvantages 2 Likes |

Nah eh! No qualms This is so unsophisticated All man to his opinion shaa In some cases death penalty should be The best option, (like some Asia countries sentencing people to death for smuggling illegal drugs), Although some crime (in my opinion) requires death penalty All the same The law was not made for revenge Rather for justice to prevail 3 Likes |

Some criminals deserved to be killed like bokoharam members, kidnappers, fulani terorist heardmen. so abolishing a death penalty doesn't look smart to me 3 Likes |

Amnesty international can set a country on fire. Saying Boko Haram members, terrorists don't deserve death penalty. That the army should respect their rights With this decision I hope there won't be a jail break in Sierra Leone. Because the whistle blower who got rewarded for exposing the hire killer that killed hundreds of people and the rape victim that reported the notorious serial rapist and murderer are in trouble. 2 Likes |

Death penalty is not good, instead if you are sure the person delibrately commited the crime, cut off his one hand, one leg, and one ear. The person will hate himself till death. 2 Likes |
