Igboho: People are working behind the scenes, says Sanwo-Olu

Victoria Edeme

24 July 2021

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated that people are ” working behind the scenes” concerning the arrest and trial of Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The governor made this known while addressing the Press at the Polling Unit 019 Ward 08, Ikoyi II, where he cast his vote during the Local Government/Council Areas election on Saturday.

PUNCH Online was live at the venue and our correspondent on ground asked the governor about the presumed silence of South West governors on the arrest of Igboho.

In response, the governor explained that “people” are working behind the scenes, stating that the case doesn’t have to be a public conversation.

“These are very difficult times for all of us. I can assure you that people are working behind the scenes.

“At occasions like this, it’s not by how many Press people you call.

“I’m aware that a lot of people have responses that they are doing quietly and privately and it doesn’t have to be a public conversation.”

The PUNCH earlier reported that the 48-year-old activist was arrested on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin.

Igboho was arrested with his Germany-based wife, Ropo, at the airport while they reportedly tried to catch a flight to Germany around 8 pm on Monday.

Five days after the arrest and planned extradition of Yoruba Nation agitator, the six governors in the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria have kept mum over the matter.

The governors are Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos).

Efforts to get the comments of Akeredolu, who is the Chairman of South-West Governors’ Forum, proved abortive as the Ondo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, neither took several calls to his line nor replied a text message sent to his line by our correspondent.

Yes we know that Nigeria government are working silently to get back to Nigeria by fire by force but God will disappoint them because igboho is not a criminal, FG government silent about the issue really shows that they are really working behind the scene.

Northern Governors call bandits businessmen. Northern Governors call bandits freedom fighters. Northern Governors say fulani herdsmen have a right to carry AK47, but some fools think Igboho will be abandoned.
Yorubas are coming around to rally around Igboho and there is nothing the Fulanis can do about it. Buhari is calling some people 5%, meanwhile his fulanis are merely 6% of Nigeria's population.

You've got it wrong. Sanwo-Olu is actually saying that SW leaders have not abandoned Igboho.

It is a coded message that SW leaders wont be cowered by a dictatorial, clearly nepotistic, biased and ethnically prejudiced federal Government.

Igboho based his agitation for secession on the meritorious ground that Yorubas are not getting justice under a Fulani-led federal goverment that appears to abet open bloodletting in the SW against Yorubas, in their own land, by Fulani invaders and marauders.

Even at that, Igboho never instigated any Yoruba to kill or attack innocent Fulanis or men/women of our armed forces. His main trust was that Yorubas must defend themselves and that those who mean us harm in our land must leave for peace to reign.

The likes of Danjuma and co have openly charged Nigerians to arm and protect themselves as Igboho has tried to rally support for yet those 'untouchable' Nigerians have never been harrassed by the DSS.

Yorubas are not empty noisemakers. We know what we are dealing with yet our political and cultutal leaders understand that eschewing anarchy is sacrosanct if we are to gain reformational and permanent wins.

Unlike others, we will show that we are capable of knowing the time and place to use brute force, diplomacy, legal/judicial avenues or even the power of the pen and mind to get what we want.

The Buhari government cannot last forever and the Yorubas know that it is impossible to suppress the genuine will of a people for change.

The idea of carrying people along and letting them have a self-determining say in their own future is one that the ever wise Yorubas know will outlive Buhari and his current myopic cabal.

The only thing constant in life is change. The vulnerability of the body of a man means, try as he wants, he cannot stop inevitable change. Northerners would do well to understand this simple and sacrosanct concept .

Sanwo-Olu could say this just to act like he cares. He did something similar during #EndSARS. We are watching.

This is the way leaders speak and defend their own...not a "gathering of pot-bellied idiots" that have actually kept mute since the incarceration of their SON.

But no shaking ...the quietness signifies FEAR .because its a known fact that the useless Governors have NO SAY IN THEIR REGION!!

ON THIS NOTE SANWO-OLU Spoke well

Sanwo Olu does not have to say zilch. He could simply remain silent because speaking up only brings him in conflict with the FG.

Speaking up to say there are efforts being put together for Igboho means Sanwo Olu cares more about the wellbeing of Igboho than about getting in anyone's bad books for defying Buhari, Malami and the ruling Fulani cabal.

Every just, fair and equitable Yoruba I know is fed up of the open nepotism, ethnocentric mien and insensitive double standards of the Government currently in charge of Nigeria.

Most people who would have been inclined to be silent previously are now understanding that evil thrives when good men do nothing.

It is an insult to all well-meaning Nigerians for Northerners like EL Rufai to justify and make excuses for the unchecked proliferation of Northern banditry, mass kidnapping, national insecurity and rampant terrorism while seeing nothing wrong with how the FG focuses all attention on Igboho and Kanu alone.

To the best of my knowledge,no Northerner has openly challenged Buhari to be a fair, just and equitable President to all Nigerians and deliver solutions, like State Policing and restructuring, unequivocal backing for ban of open grazing etal.

I.e potential solutions that will ensure the agitation of the likes of Igboho will disappear once the problems causing insecurity, mayhem, loss of lives and loss of livelihoods are resolved.

Southern leaders will resort to self-help a lot more in the face of the obvious and fatally costly discrimination and open bias being displayed by the Buhari government.

Regarding Sanwo-Olu, if that be the case, it's a thing of joy for me. South leaders must confront this old senile vegetable in Aso-Rock and let him know that this is not 1970.
