His best season was the 2011/12 season where he scored 73 goals and 91 calendar year goals albeit that season didn't lead to a lot of trophies. This is probably his best season both individually and collectively.

Messi is not really a great FK taker. But frankly, in terms of taking FKs, if Penaldo is there, then Messi should be there too.

I don't know about his best or not. What I know about is that, this is the best version of Messi yet. He has transmogrified and reinvented himself from being dependent on Xaviesta, to being the creator cum finisher. Now, he is Xaviesta + Messi. Not to mention he defends more now than before.

I couldn't have wished for a better version than what he is now.

If we take the 2011/2012 season over this, it would mean he is valued because of his goals. And that would also mean Ronaldo could be compared to Messi for his goals. But why do we always value him more than Ronaldo no matter the number of goals Ronaldo scores? Still because of his other aspects of his game (that stats doesn't tell) which makes him far better this season than in previous ones. My opinion though.
