Skin cancer investigation is a visual exam that helps in detecting the early signs of cancer. In many cases, the patient would be able to do the skin examination or visit a specialist for the same purpose. The screening checks for moles, birthmarks or any other unusual marks, which may be signs of skin cancer.

Many people skip the examinations, which need to be done at regular intervals, mainly because they feel the cancer screening cost burden. One should understand that skin cancer is one of the most common cancer forms and, at times, can be life-threatening too. Experts suggest that a few cancers would not spread to other parts and can be cured with medications. Melanoma, one of the rarest skin cancer but more dangerous as it can spread and claim lives.

The skin examination would help detect the early stage when it is easier to treat and save a life. One should understand that the examination would look for signs of cancer. Experts do not use it for diagnosis. If the expert finds significant signs of skin cancer, then they would suggest further tests like biopsy.

One should understand that every individual is not likely to be affected by this skin condition. A few are more susceptible than the others. People who are more prone to cancer are:
• Light skin tone
• Blond or red hair
• Light coloured eyes
• Skin that burns or freckles easily
• History of sunburns
• Skin cancer history in the family
• Frequent exposure to the sun
• A large number of moles

If a person finds changes in colour or shape of the moles of spots, they would surely need to visit a skin expert. The doctor would check for asymmetry, border, colour, diameter, and changes in the mole in most cases. If they feel that the patient needs further tests, then they would prescribe all the changes. The skin examination is just to ensure that the person is not showing any signs of skin cancer.

If a mole or a mark looks like a sign of cancer, then the expert would suggest a biopsy. In the procedure, the lab technician would collect a small sample of skin for testing. The sample is put under a microscope to check for cancer cells. If the expert confirms cancer, then the doctor would start the treatment.

In many cases, these examinations proved to be live savers, as it helps in early detection; thus, save lives.
