Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has charged Nigerians to change the perception that the country runs the most expensive National Assembly in the world.

He revealed that the National Assembly spends less than two per cent of the national budget.

Gbajabiamila disclosed this at the 10th annual symposium of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, B-Zone, in Abeokuta, as his reaction to a statement credited to the Vice-Chancellor of Ahman Pategi University, Patigi, Kwara state, Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji, who said that Nigeria runs the most expensive National Assembly in the world.

“With due respect to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nigeria spends the highest amount of money on the legislators in the world and the National Assembly consumes more money than any other parliament in the world.

“A unicameral legislature with two representatives from each state is sufficient. The National Assembly should have less than 100 members, including Abuja,” Adedimeji stated in his lecture.

However, Gbajabiamila denied the statement, describing his perception as wrong.

“No one till today has actually sat down to go into research and define the meaning of legislators.

“The money being spent on the national assembly is less than two per cent of the total budget of this country; but nobody, has ever looked at what is happening to the remaining 98 per cent. And when you say National Assembly, you are not talking about legislators, who are the lawmakers only. You are also talking about the National Assembly Commission, you are talking about everything, all encompassing,” he said.

Is it the percentage of the budget that is the issue or the amount that goes to each of them?

This is what he should compare to what others elsewhere receive and not merely express it as a percentage

cool

Running cost, estacodes , Constituency Project allocation quarterly, committee oversight allowances, contract padding... These are the bane,

It's like civil servants, Doctors, Lecturers and security agencies like police and army qouting their salary as only source of income even when DCP Abba Kyari with monthly net income of less than 500k leaves larger than life, state lectures and doctors who never got paid for upward 6 months still feed daily and drive to work, claiming na God do am oo

Is the payment to the legislators meant for eating and buying toys? Are you aware of the purpose to which the allowances is meant for? If the present crop are not using it for that purpose does it mean the purpose is now useless and no longer necessary?

The budget of the national assembly is about 130bn which includes the salary of about 1000 staff working in the assembly complex. This is about 1% of our 13 trillion budget. Even if you reduce it at most by 50% it will be 65bn.

Now we need to triple our budget to meet our growth needs. We need about 26 trillion extra, how can saving 65bn from NASS be the major reason for not having 26 trillion? We are looking in the wrong place

So in essense, since what these legislathieves are earning is nothing compared to the national budget, lets look away, its okay...what a logic, what a comparison...

Ok we run the most unaccountable and corrupt one.

Imagine he’s comparing the budget of Nass to the whole country of 170milion people.

No single accountability in the Nass bt they check the accountability of others bodies.

It is terrible that they claimed to be for the poor Masses but all you see is arogancy and talk and talk. The Youth are even worse easily deceived by rolling out to them small gifts in wrappers every 4-years,just to quell their angers. Where are the employments for the Million Youths? It's all deception! Many of the honourables don't live in their zones again but comes back every time elections are near.
They have lost torch with realities on the ground.

No, we are looking at the right place. We don't need 26 trillion extra, we need to significantly cut the extravagant cost of governance. 130 billion per year for less than 1500 people, 130 billion wasted each year for 21 years, 130 billion without any meaningful contribution in return. Maybe if they reduced it to 500m per year, they won't be killing themselves trying to get there by all means or turn it to a retirement home for looters and failed governors.

Wakanda rubbish is this

Again,
We will keep saying this : These kids below are the ones that need wardrobe allowance or food in their belly or fuel for transportation to their various schoos, or anything increament in their lives.
And vehicles that will be taking them to and from school.
Not our senators or any , retired, sitting, standing or crawling politicians or any other PARASTATALS,
Or any auditor-general.

Thumbs-up to the Reps in this case.
This is the kinda change we voted for.
Not the previous ones that were there for 16 wasted years, that turned blind eyes to all the corruption that took place, taking our darling nation 100 years back.

May devil punish all corrupt politicians and public servants in this nation.

Did you know that Since 1999,
Nigeria senators earn more than POTUS?
Insane, just insane.
This rubbish must stop.....NOW!!!

We Rise.
