There have been several sightings of African elephants by residents of Ikuru townin Andoni local govt. area of Rivers state.
African elephants once roamed the jungles of west Africa, but are currently almost in extinction, they were hunted to near extinction for hundreds of years for their valuable ivories derived from their tusks.
there have also been few sightings in ondo state state by hunters but unfortunately it was always too late for the elephants here as they were usually killed by these hunters.
We hereby call on government to direct the community heads and leaders to instruct their citizens not to harm these herds of elephants, before they are hunted down and butchered, as these are creatures that are almost in extinction and hardly seen.

if they take off the tusk, it will be over for the elephant. Especially if it's a male. They need that tusk for fighting & to attract female elephant for mating . I believe it's a male, that is why he is alone.Female don't live alone

Amazing stuff. But how come the locals did not know that they had elephants? These are massive animals and they make a massive trumpet noise. How come nobody knew that they were in a certain area. What else is out there that we don't know?

this is a forest, Rivers state is not one savannah with tall grasses that u could possibly see hundreds of meters away, its a rainforest region with massive trees, some of the forests could be a thousand kilometers square, so its possible if they haven't come across one of them.
